Summary:: 3/4: Fawzy is panting and pulling to greet a M LMB dog at the gate. He has a loose body and attempts to sniff. He is whining throughout.
Summary (1):: Fawzy is a social and affectionate male dog who is very active, playful, and quite vocal. He spends most of his time outdoors or in the basement. For grooming, he goes to the groomer regularly and also allows his owner or family members to bathe and brush him. On a leash, he shows mild to moderate pulling, rating about a 3, and he has access to a yard for exercise. His walks typically last around 20 minutes. Fawzy has never been crate trained. He absolutely loves car rides. He knows many Arabic words, and in English he understands “come,” “go,” and “give me.” His previous owner’s favorite things about him are that he has a good heart, and that he is very friendly and smart. Fawzy enjoys just about everything when it comes to activities, toys, food, and snacks.
Summary (7):: 3.03: Fawzy is standing at the front of his kennel when staff approached. He is easily leashed and ignores barking dogs as he is led outside. Once outside, staff attempt to collar Fawzy. Initially, he is evasive of the collar, but eventually accepts petting from staff and tolerates the collar being placed and fitted. A drag leash is attached, and Fawzy begins exploring the yard with a loose body. Staff presents a slip lead to Fawzy, and he then tries hiding from staff behind the toy bin. Staff were able to pick the drag leash off the floor and guide Fawzy to the gate, where a second staff member is able to secure a slip lead. A second slip lead is then added before entering the building. Once at the doorway to the adoptions room, Fawzy becomes vocal before jumping and flipping, which twisted the slip leads. Staff continue guiding Fawzy to his kennel, where he begins leash biting, and staff ultimately had to drop their leashes in his kennel to close the door. 2.28: Fawzy is at the front of the kennel when staff approach. He tries to squeeze out of the kennel when the door is opened. Staff is able to leash him and take him out for a walk. He has a soft body and explores his surroundings. Once it's time to bring him back to the kennel, Fawzy begins to balk outside of the dog adoptions room. Staff try to walk him to his kennel but he continues to balk and begins to bite on the leash. They offer treats but he ignores them. They take him out of the room to reset and he immediately approaches staff members and leans against their leg. He allows petting on his head and back. After a few minutes, staff try to walk him to the kennel again but he begins to leash bite once he gets near the kennel. High value treats are tossed which he ignores. He is then double leashed and staff are able to get him into a kennel

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Because Fawzy is escalating being returned to kennel, we recommend a home with no children. Place with a New Hope partner: We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.
Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Anxiety,Leash-biting
Potential challenges comments:: Resource Guarding: Fawzy finds food, treat toy and stolen objects of a high value. He is reported to growl or hard bark. We recommend Fawzy be left alone when eating. Nothing should ever be taken directly out of his mouth. Should you have to remove something from Fawzy, we recommend always trading for something of an equal or higher value. He should be taught the “drop” cue and trade-up games. Please see handout on Resource Guarding. Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Fawzy is social when out with handlers however, he escalates to thrashing, snapping, biting the leash and attempting to push out of kennel once inside. He is a bite risk being returned to kennel. Please see handout on Fearful Potential for Defensive Aggression. Anxiety: Fawzy is highly anxious in his kennel and while out with staff, whining, pacing, hypersalivating, seeking exit. His owner reported anxiety in the home as well. We recommend puzzle toys, long walks, and giving him other things to focus on to alleviate his anxiety. Positive reinforcement, force-free training only should be used. Please see the handout on Generalized Anxiety. Leash-biting: Fawzy is leash-biting in attempt to avoid returning to kennel. This is likely a shelter specific behavior. Should the behavior arise in a home, we recommend walking him with treats or a toy to dissuade him from grabbing the leash. Positive reinforcement, force-free training is advised to teach him to focus on you rather than grabbing the leash. Please see the handout on Leash Manners.
