Animal Profile

Bailey

Hello, my name is Bailey. My animal id is #229768. I am a female brown dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 7 months 1 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 6/21/2025, with the surrender reason stated as animal behavior - barks too much.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Bailey is currently at risk due to behavior reasons. Bailey has been mostly social with handlers at the care center, displaying soft body and allowing most handling. When uncomfortable, she will thrash and move away. However, Bailey's previous owners report her to be reactive towards dogs and strangers, hard barking, lunging and snapping towards them. She is reported to be destructive and vocal in the home as well as mouthy. Medically, Bailey is apparently healthy.

For a New Family to Know: Bailey is an incredibly active dog and vocal companion. She enjoys being where the people are and the living room. For grooming, Bailey allows baths and being brushed. However, she does not allow her nails being trimmed and can escalate to bark, growls, and snaps. She goes on walks 1-2 times a day and enjoys car rides. She understands sit and paw in both Spanish and English. The owners favorite thing about Bailey is how she likes to lick peoples ears. When it comes to toys, Bailey likes teddy bears and plush toys.

Potential challenges: : Destructive behavior,Basic manners/poor impulse control,Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Strength/leash pulling

Potential challenges comments:: Destructive Behavior: Bailey's previous owner states that she has destructive tendencies in the home. We are unaware of what, if any, attempts were made to remedy this behavior but we suggest to future adopters that Bailey will need to be provided with physical and mental stimulation and with a variety of appropriate and engaging chew toys so they can engage in necessary chewing behavior without damage to human objects. Please see handout on Destructive Behavior. Basic Manners: Bailey's previous owner states that she will jump up on people often. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Sit" and "Off" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach them to control their impulses instead of simply reacting. Please see handout on Basic Manners. Mouthiness: Bailey's previous owner states that she is mouthy and takes treats rough. We recommend never playing with bare hands, always with a toy, and ending play or attention whenever Bailey puts teeth on skin. They should be rewarded with attention and treats when they stop and/or when they are seeking attention in alternate ways. Please see handout on Mouthiness. Handling Sensitivity: Bailey's previous owner states that she will lunge and snap when her paws are touched. It is important to avoid touching Bailey's paws at this time and to be cautious when touching them in other areas as we do not know where they may have other sensitivities. Please see handout on Handling and Touch Sensitivity. Fearful Defensive: Bailey's previous owner states that she is fearful of loud noises. They also state that she will hard bark, growl, lunge, and snap towards strangers and children. It is important to move slowly with Bailey, to build positive associations, and to allow them to initiate interactions with new people. They should never be forced to greet or to interact if they are not comfortable and soliciting attention. Please see handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression. Anxiety: Bailey's previous owner states that she has general anxiety. During her medical exam Bailey was observed to whine, pace, pant and seek exit. If Bailey displays anxious behavior in their future home, we recommend puzzle toys, long walks, and giving them other things to focus on to alleviate their anxiety. Please see handout on Generalized Anxiety. On Leash Reactivity: Bailey's previous owner states that she is reactive towards strangers, children, and dogs. Bailey will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than dogs and other stimuli. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration. Leash Pulling: Bailey's previous owner states that she pulls very hard on leash. Please see handout on Leash Manners.
