Animal Profile

Milo

Hello, my name is Milo. My animal id is #231250. I am a desexed male black dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 3 years 2 months 2 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 7/15/2025, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- moving.

Milo is at risk due to kennel stress and deterioration in kennel. He is frequently observed pawing, digging, panting, and howling at his kennel door, and recently escalated to hard barking with teeth baring at an adopter. While outside the kennel he is generally social, affiliative with handlers, and engages readily in training sessions. Medically Milo has CIRDC and Dental Disease.

Milo is a clever and engaged pup enrolled in our Shelter Scholars program, where he's working on building trust and developing positive behaviors around resource guarding, especially when it comes to toys. Through consistent positive reinforcement and structured training, Milo is learning that he doesn't need to guard the things he values, sharing can be safe and rewarding. He's making steady progress and growing more confident with each session. What my friends at ACC say about me: I need a home without cats or small animals. I would do best in a home with only adult humans. I'm sensitive and shy. I'll need extra help from you. I don't always like to share my food, toys or bedding with other animals. I am looking for a home with a patient person.

My medical notes are...

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 4

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),No cats

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to Milo Potential challenges we reccomend he is placed in an adult only home at this time. No cats: In the prior home, Milo is to have lunged at cats. We recommend he be placed in a home with no cats.

Potential challenges: : House soiling,Resource guarding,Basic manners/poor impulse control,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Strength/leash pulling,Kennel presence

Potential challenges comments:: House soiling: In the prior home he is noted to be partially house trained, and is reported to have weekly accidents.Training should focus on establishing a consistent bathroom routine, close supervision indoors, and positive reinforcement for eliminating outside to improve reliability. Please see the handout on House soiling Resource guarding: In the prior home he is noted to protects items in his possession by hovering over them with a tense body. This behavior suggests discomfort with sharing valued items and should be addressed through desensitization, trading exercises, and teaching a reliable “drop it” cue to build trust and reduce guarding tendencies. Please see the handout on Resource guarding Basic manners/poor impulse control: In the prior home he is noted to jump frequently on people.Training should include teaching polite greetings, reinforcing calm behavior, and redirecting excitement into appropriate outlets. Please see the handout on Basic manners/poor impulse control On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: In the prior home he is noted while on walks he lunges towards strangers that approach him, and cats. A training plan should include counter-conditioning to triggers, increasing distance from stimuli, and reinforcing calm behavior on leash. Please see the handout on On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration Strength/leash pulling: In the prior home he is noted to pull hard on the lead while on walks. Training should focus on loose-leash walking techniques, using appropriate equipment (e.g., front-clip harness), and rewarding the dog for walking calmly beside the handler. Please see the handout on Strength/leash pulling. Kennel presence: Milo is noted to hard bark when adopters pass by his kennel
