Date of assessment:: 6/17/2026

Summary:: Milo arrived at MACC following a bite incident. On June 10th Milo’s previous owner was preparing to feed the three resident dogs. While one dog was eating, the owner gave treats to their two other dogs. Macho and Milo. Macho approached Milo while he was eating, Milo growled and snapped at Macho. Biting and releasing him on the face. This bite broke skin and drew blood. Milo’s previous owner states that he has a history of biting other dogs when they approach him while he is eating. Milo has also bitten people when they intervene. All bites have been bite and release with growling prior. Milo will growl, hard bark, snap, or attempt to bite while in the possession of food, toys, and treats. It is also reported that Milo will show teeth/lip lift, lunge, growl, hard bark, and snap when seeing strangers, small animals, or moving objects while on leash. Milo’s previous owner reports that Milo has handling sensitivity. Milo will bite when held/restrained or when his paws are touched. Milo will also escalate to snapping when disturbed while sleeping, when pushed off furniture, and when his collar is grabbed. Due to the multiple bite history and the quick escalation in Milo’s behavior, he is not a candidate for a handling assessment at this time.

Summary (7):: 6/15/26: Milo is at the front of his kennel with a neutral body and slightly widened eyes, he is then easily leashed and removed form kennel. Milo is taken to the yard, where he walked around the perimeter. Throughout the walk, Milo would not react towards any dogs or people he had seen throughout the walk. Afterwards, he is brought back inside for his assessment - once completed, returned to kennel with ease.

Date of intake:: 6/12/2026

Summary:: Tense and growling at Macho (his house mate)

Date of initial:: 6/12/2026

Summary:: Tense, but allows all handling for exam. Thrashing for tasks

ENERGY LEVEL:: Milo is described as medium energy. They will need daily mental and physical activity to keep them engaged and exercised. And we recommend using force-free, reward-based training techniques for them.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to the multiple bite history we recommend an adult only home. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.

Potential challenges: : House soiling,Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Multiple-bite history/risk of future aggression,Anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Bite history (human),Bite history (dog)

Potential challenges comments:: House Soiling: Milo's previous owner states that he will have daily accidents. We recommend positive reinforcement, reward-based training only. Accidents should never be punished as this will likely make the problem worse. Please see handout on House Soiling. Mouthiness: Milo's previous owner states that he will take treats roughly. We recommend giving treats with a flat hand and to use force-free, reward-based training methods to teach Milo to take treats with a softer mouth. Please see handout on Mouthiness. Fearful Defensive/ Handling Sensitivity: Milo's previous owner states that he will bite when held and when his paws are touched. Milo will snap when disturbed, when pushed off furniture, and when his collar is grabbed. Positive reinforcement, reward based training should be used to pair touch with good things such as food rewards in order to teach Milo to be more comfortable with this. Please see handout on Handling and Touch Sensitivity. Multiple Bite History/Bite History (Human and Dog): Please see bite history above for more details. Escalating to biting is a behavior that Milo has rehearsed repeatedly over their life. This behavior is likely to continue as it has become part of Milo's repertoire, and will need careful management to work toward reducing triggers for Milo and reducing the resulting bites. Please see handout on Bite History and Potential for Future Aggression. Anxiety: Milo's previous owner states that he is anxious in the home and barks a lot. If Milo displays anxious behavior in their future home, we recommend puzzle toys, long walks, and giving them other things to focus on to alleviate their anxiety. Positive reinforcement, force-free training should be used. Please see handout on Generalized Anxiety. On Leash Reactivity: Milo's previous owner states that he will show teeth, lip lift, lunge, growl, hard bark, and snap towards strangers, moving objects, and small animals. Milo will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than people and other stimuli. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration.
