Ira
Hello, my name is Ira. My animal id is #242657. I am a male gray dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 1 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a agency on 11/29/2025.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.
Pre-Screener FormIra is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. Ira has displayed high arousal and poor impulse control in the care center, including repeated leash biting, jumping up on handlers, and attempting to grab at their underarm or clothing during walks. During interactions at times he continues to jump with intensity, becoming mouthy and difficult to settle, and often requires redirection with treats. Medically, Ira has CIRDC.

Ira arrived to the care centers as a stray. Ira arrives at the care center quickly becoming over-aroused in the presence of people, jumping up and mouthing during interactions. In the care center he escalates when excited or overwhelmed and has difficulty remaining calm around people and other stimuli. Ira shows clear signs of over-stimulation during handling and can struggle to regulate his behavior when aroused. As a result, we recommend he is placed with one of our New Hope Partners.

Summary:: Due to entering the facility as a stray, there is no prior dog-to-dog history recorded. 12/01/25 Ira is introduced to a female helper dog while off leash at the care center. Ira approaches the gate appearing aloof, ignoring the female dog as he climbs the gate to look at the handler in the next pen. He walks away and explores amongst himself. The gate is opened and Ira is allowed to enter the pen off-leash. Initially he is reluctant to approach the female dog, maintaining his distance. When the female dog turns around, Ira slowly creeps up to sniff her genitals as well as allowing her to do the same to him. Ira's body grows softer and he will exchange body contact with the female dog before engaging in chase play. Ira willingly separates himself to shake off and return to playing. 11/30 Cannot conduct due to awaiting health check.
Summary (5):: 12/13/25: Ira is at laying at the front of his kennel as the handler approaches. He gets up with a loose and wiggly body and allows the handler to clip his collar with a drag leash. He will then pull moderately to the behavior office where he is free to roam around the room. He will toggle from playing with multiple toys independently to engaging with the snuffle mat and treats on the ground throughout the session. He will occasionally play two toy fetch with two of the handlers in the room. They work on his impulse control, waiting for him to sit down before tossing the toy as he is jumping high to try to grab the toy out of the handler's hand. After a while, Ira is walked out of the room while he holds a toy. In the hallway, he will drop the toy and briefly mouth at the leash. The handler loosens the leash and Ira will drop the leash and grab the toy on the floor again. They continue walking back to the kennel where he is unclipped and secured safely. He is given a licki mat as well.
Summary (6):: 12/12/25: Ira is siting in his kennel as handler approaches. He is able to be leashed while being distracted with treats and he then pulls hard on the way to the behavior room. In the room, he is able to be transferred to a drag leash and he would engage in toys, treats, and a snuffle mat that had treats on it. He would approach the handlers that were in the room with a loose and wiggly body and jump up to receive pets and treats. He pulls hard on the way back to his kennel and enters with no issues. 12/11/25: Ira is siting in his kennel as handler approaches. He is able to be leashed while being distracted with treats and he then pulls hard on the way to the behavior room. In the room, he would engage in toys, treats, and a snuffle mat that had treats on it. When he would stop engaging in the items provided, he would jump up and try to bite at the handler's leash. Each time he would jump up to try and grab the leash again, he is able to be redirected when the handler tossed treats each time. He is then able to go back to engaging in the snuffle mat and would play and chew on the toys. He pulls hard on the way back to his kennel and is able to enter when treats are tossed inside. He hard barks in his kennel as the handler locks the door and walks away.
Summary (7):: 12/09/25: ACS reports that while on their PM walk he began to leash biting and had to be stiff-armed to be brought back into the center, when trying to distract with treats, he ignored them and will jump up and attempt to grab onto the handler underarm. 12/08/25: Ira is at the front of his kennel, laying down until the handler opens the door. He gets up slowly and the handler clips their leash to his collar. He will pull moderately to the live room and once in the room, the handler drops the drag leash and he is able sniff around the room freely. He will interact with the snuffle mats and licki mat but does not find the hidden paper tubes filled with treats. After a while, he is called to the door by the handler who takes his leash and walks him to his kennel where he is secured safely. 12/5/25: Ira is siting in his kennel as handler approaches. He is able to be leashed with ease he pulls on the way to behavior room for his assessment. In the room, he would constantly jump up on the handlers very high and is able to take treats. He jumps up very high towards a handler's head as they were siting down in a chair at the computer and starts to become mouthy. He begins to leash bite during the jogging portion and is able to be redirected when treats are tossed on the ground. He then pulls back to his kennel and enters with no issues. 12/01/25 ( PG Note): Olivia is standing at the front of her kennel with a neutral frame and allows the handler to leash her with ease. She is brought to the play yard to meet a male playmate. Once inside, a drag leash is placed on her, and she roams the yard freely while waiting for her playmate to arrive. Once the male enters, both dogs participate in a nose to nose greeting at the gate, maintaining neutral frames with gentle tail wags. When the gate is opened, Olivia approaches her playmate, sniffing him in a circular motion and places her front paws on his back while wagging her tail. Olivia emits a brief grumble while vocalizing at him but maintains a soft, loose body throughout the interaction. When the session ends, Olivia is returned to her kennel safely without any issues. See Dog to Dog notes for additional details. 11/30/25 (Assessments): Ira is at the front of his kennel with a wiggly frame as the handler approaches. He is leashed with ease and will bounce out of the kennel and into the hallway. He pulls moderately to the behavior office where he is fitted with a collar and clipped to a drag leash. Once his assessment is over, he is switched from the drag leash to the slip leash and returned to his kennel which he refuses to enter, backing up as they approach it and almost thrashing. The handler then picks Ira up and places him into the kennel. He is secured safely. (See Assessments for more details)

Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Social hyperarousal,Leash-biting
Potential challenges comments:: Basic manners/poor impulse control/Social hyperarousal/Leash-biting: Ira quickly becomes over-aroused in the presence of people, jumping up and mouthing and leash biting intensely. Positive reinforcement, force-free training should be used to teach Ira to remain calm when people and other exciting things are around. He should be rewarded with treats when calm. If he escalates to jumping or mouthing, people should immediately walk away from and separate themselves from Ira.
