Animal Profile

McKenzie

Hello, my name is McKenzie. My animal id is #199628. I am a male brown tabby cat at the . The shelter thinks I am about 6 years 2 months old.

I came into the shelter as a stray on 5/8/2024.

Reserved

Someone has already placed a deposit on me. I'm no longer available.

McKenzie is on the at-risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. He has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

Let's get to know each other a bit more...

Behavior Condition: 4. Orange

Date of Intake: 5/8/2024

KNOWN HISTORY:: McKenzie was brought in as a stray, there is no known information on his behavior history in a home environment. Upon intake: staff had to tilt the carrier the have him walk out, he let staff scan for ID and take his picture. He tried to walk off of the admissions table and he allowed staff to pick him up and place him in the den and he wasn't handled further

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 5/29/24 Laying in front of kennel, body and face tense. He flinches and blinks each time I offer a treat and he remains too focused on me to engage with them as long as I'm watching. When I check on him later I notice all the treats are gone but he has also retreated to the other-side of his kennel which is covered, to hide. Needs more time to adjust. FB1261 6/4/24 FB79 in his kennel with his paws tucked away under his body McKenzie immediately begins to swat at the scratcher tool when introduced; he continues to harshly swat multiple times before quickly retreating to the other side of his double kennel. 6/18/24 FB1261 Sitting upright in front of kennel, ears forward and tail curled neatly around body. He eats the treat offered and I click and reward each time he sniffs my hand calmly or tolerates a quick rub on his tiny head. I end the session when he hisses and tries to swat and before I leave the room I reward him with a few more treats when he remains calm again.

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Subdued

VOCAL:: Quiet

CHARACTER TYPE: : Skittish,Bold,Curious,Playful,Independent

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: New home adjustment period,Fearful

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : New Hope Only

RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home

Recommendations comments:: Due to the behavior seen in shelter and needing a longer time to warm up, the behavior team feels McKenzie would do best in an adult-only home where they would be able to acclimate in a calm environment.

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: On approach, McKenzie is out at the front of his cage with a slightly tense face and body, eyes wide and dilated, ears slightly tilted and tail mid level. The assessor offers some treats and he leans forward to sniff. He tenses even more when the scratcher tool is slowly introduced through the cage door and pulls his head back but sniffs the tool. He tolerates one or two passes along his back as he eats a couple treats before he looks back at the tool and hisses, backing away and swatting hard at the tool with both paws, ears tilted and face and body tense. The interaction is ended and pick up is not attempted. Although McKenzie now waits in front of his kennel for playtime and treats, he is still not yet tolerant of any petting or hands-on interaction. McKenzie is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. He has tried to swat, is extremely fearful in the shelter environment and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
