A volunteer writes: Let me tell you about the love of my life, Burnaby. He look like a small bear cub, 63lbs to be exact. He is as cute as they get, with the sweet roly poly body of a 1 year old dog. I think I told Burna how much I loved him a million times the day we met. If I could have put him in my car and taken him home that day, I would have. You may have heard of "demand barking" (not a term we love!). Well Burna demand hugs. He paws at you gently and wraps his arms around you, and it could melt the north pole, thats how sweet it is. Burna and his older brother Biscuit were surrendered due to a no pet policy in a new home. They lived alone in their guardian's old apartment for over a month with visits just to feed them. When that situation could not persist, they came to the shelter. Biscuit was reclaimed by his original shelter, and Burna is waiting with us for his new home to come. In his previous life he also lived with 3 kids who he was said to get along with. His guardian's report positive interactions with other dogs, and his shelter experiences mirror that. He is also said to be friendly with cats! Burna is described as social, affectionate, and active. He is noted to walk well on least, love car rides, and not be a fan of baths. His former guardian's favorite thing about him is no surprise - "He is very loving. Loves hugs and kisses." when Burnaby arrived he was very fearful and pancaked a number of times, so he is looking for an experienced home in case he continues to be fearful outside of the shelter environment. He is at Brooklyn ACC. What my friends at ACC say about me: I love to be loved, but on my own terms! Let's brush up on some canine body language together! I don't always like to share my food, toys or bedding with other animals. I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I would do best in a home with only adult humans. I'm ready to learn! I need a patient person who has the time to work on training with me. Previous owner said he loves hugs and kisses and he knows sit, stay, come and lay down Please check here for updated adoption hours.

Burnaby will be walked over to greet the novel male dog face-to-face as the novel male dog displays a soft frame. Burnaby approaches, the novel male dog becomes tense while Burnaby is soft and wiggly. The novel male dog will sniff Burnaby's genitals and Burnaby will use this as an opportunity to attempt to mount but the novel male dog moves a way. The second attempt leads to the novel male dog displaying a disproportionate correction. Burnaby displays an appropriate response, by disengaging and moving away from the novel male dog. The novel male dog is moved away and returned to kennel. 07/01/24 Burnaby is introduced to a novel female dog while off leash at the care center. Burnaby greets the novel female dog with a soft, wiggly body. Burnaby is moved to the farthest pen in order to allow her to enter and greet him face to face. Burnaby approaches the novel female dog with a soft body, sniffing her genitals and allowing for his to be sniffed. The two will engage in chase play, trading off body contact. Burnaby will attempt to mount during his introduction and is corrected by the handler. Burnaby will become less exuberant when wanting to stop playing. the novel female dog will nip at Burnaby in which he was tolerant to, and will crate distance in order to let the novel female dog know he doesn't want to play. Burnaby is introduced to a novel male dog this time. The interaction will go exactly the same on Burnaby's part, displaying the same exact behavior. This time, Burnaby was bit more comfortable due to the novel male dog being a bit gentler and not nipping at him. Burnaby this time will actually mount the novel male dog due to the novel male dog allowing it, but Burnaby is corrected by the handler. The two will shake off and be separated. 06/13/24 Burna is introduced to a novel female dog while off leash at the care center. Burna greets the novel female dog with a soft, wiggly body. Summary (5):: 08.01.24: Burnaby was sitting on top of his kuranda bed with soft eyes as the handler approaches. Handler lures him to the front of kennel using a baby voice, Burnaby approaches with a loose and wiggly body. He moderately - lightly pulls as he is walked towards the canine behavior assessment room. He immediately engages with the LATTE (snuffle mat). After finishing the majority of the treats hidden in the mat, Burnaby was actively seeking attention from handler. He would jump up with two paws on the the handlers chest, and slowly melt into the floor if his rear-end was be scratched. He divided his time between the two handlers, being pet by one, walking over to the other handler, and being pet by the second. He was easily walked back to kennel, but was hesitant on going inside his actual kennel. Put the brakes on a little bit, but was easily coaxed with treats, baby voice, and a light pressure on the nose. 07/30/24 Burnaby is lying down as the handler approaches. The handler calls him in a high pitch voice and Burnaby rises with a loose body. Burnaby is leashed with ease and taken for a walk. Burnaby maintains a loose frame while trotting beside the handler moderately. Burnaby will climb the handler for pets, allowing handling. Burnaby enjoys his pets as he leans in. Burnaby takes treats gently as they are administered. Burnaby is returned to the facility greeting a staff member with an extra wiggle as their name is called. Burnaby enters the building as well as his kennel with no issue.
Summary (6):: 07/26/24: Burnaby was observed screeching in kennel and licking door. He did not eat treats tossed into his kennel. He attempted to push his way out of kennel as handler opened door, so a second handler assisted with leashing him and he was brought to the BA room. Burnaby was clipped to a drag leash and explored the room. He had intense zoomies while screeching, so handlers allowed him time to decompress before continuing to engage with him. Burnaby played with stuffed toys and bounded around the room with a loose body. He was social with handlers and solicited many pets. He was taken for a short walk on the street and his arousal level appeared to have lessened significantly. He was able to stand calmly by handlers when they sat on a bench outside. He was returned to kennel with ease. Burnaby is seen banging on his kennel door causing the whole kennel to rock back and forth. 07/23/2024: Burnaby was very loose and wiggly as the handler approaches. Was noticed slamming into transfer door earlier in the day. Treats were used by handler to lure into kennel rope. He pulled moderately to the back play yard. He tolerated being clipped to a drag line. Burnaby accepted pets but not a lot of treats while outside. He maintained a very loose and wiggly body throughout his interactions with handlers, even jumping into the handlers lap. Was able to regulate his arousal and refrain from body-slamming into handlers when recalled. Had limited interest in LATTE enrichment item. Was brought back to kennel safely, balked slightly, but was coaxed with some baby voice . 07/22/24 Burnaby is lying down neutrally as the handler approaches. Burnaby is leashed with ease and taken for a to the play yard. Burnaby displays a soft, neutral frame, trotting beside the handler. The handler places a drag leash onto him and allows him free roam. Burnaby will spend his time exploring, sniffing in different areas as well, as well as marking them. Burnaby is then taken for a walk as well where he maintains his soft, neutral frame. Burnaby is returned to the facility where he enters the building and his kennel with no issue. -JC 7/16/24: Burnaby is sitting neutrally in his kennel as the handler approaches. He is easily leashed and walks neutrally to the canine behavior office. Burnaby engages with mild interest in the LATTE enrichment items and jumps up onto handler's laps for contact. He is returned to kennel without issue. ACS staff report that Burnaby has been banging repeatedly on his transfer door.
Summary (7):: 7/8/24: Burnaby was sitting calmly in his crate and was leashed with ease. He walked to the yard for a gate greet/brief interaction with another male dog. Burnaby did not reciprocate when the other male dog overcorrected him, and was able to be pulled away with ease. He recovered immediately and was loose and social with multiple handlers. Burnaby ate treats and jumped up on handler's lap, leaning into pets. He was returned to crate by another handler. 07/07/24: Burnaby's behavior remains the same while in care. He is walked out to the play yard for PG with 3 other males (see Dog-Dog Summary for further details). He is returned to kennel safely. 6/28/24: Burnaby is sitting neutrally in kennel when the handler approaches. He is easily leashed and led to the play yards. The primary handler begins to scratch him and Burnaby leans in, kicking both hind legs. After being scratched for several minutes, he lays down at the handler's feet, visibly more relaxed. Burnaby begins to scratch himself and his itching lines up with an open sore on his side. He is easily leashed and returned to the kennel without issue.

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13)- Due to Burnaby high level of free we recommend an adult only home at this time.
Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Anxiety,Basic manners/poor impulse control,Fearful,Handling/touch sensitivity,Destructive behavior
Potential challenges comments:: Resource Guarding: In his prior home, Burnaby is known to guard valuable items such as toys, food, and treats (bones, rawhides, etc.). While no specific reactions have been reported, caution should be taken as his reaction to attempts to touch or take these items is unknown. Training focused on resource exchange and desensitization can help manage and reduce this behavior. Destructive Behavior: Burnaby exhibits destructive behavior when left alone, chewing up shoes, clothes, blankets, socks, and his leash. Providing appropriate chew toys and mental stimulation can help redirect these behaviors. Creating a safe space for Burnaby with limited access to tempting items can also be beneficial. Basic Manners/Poor Impulse Control: Burnaby often jumps up on people, displaying poor impulse control. Consistent training using positive reinforcement can help him learn better manners and reduce this behavior. Teaching commands like "sit" and "stay" and rewarding calm behavior can improve his impulse control. Handling/Touch Sensitivity: Burnaby has displayed sensitivity to handling, likely due to cuts around his body. He flinches and pancakes when touched, indicating discomfort and fear. Gentle handling and gradual desensitization to touch can help him feel more secure. Providing positive experiences during handling can build his confidence. Fearful Behavior: In the care center, Burnaby has shown signs of fear, such as pancaking and exhibiting whale eye. Creating a calm and safe environment with minimal stressors will help him build confidence. Using positive reinforcement to reward calm behavior and gradually exposing him to new experiences can reduce his fearfulness. Anxiety: Burnaby has displayed anxious behaviors at the care center, including panting and lip licking. Providing a predictable routine and a quiet space can help manage his anxiety. Activities that promote relaxation, such as gentle play and interactive toys, can also help. On-Leash Reactivity/Barrier Frustration: Burnaby reacts to small animals (squirrels, birds, rats, etc.) during walks, often wanting to play. Using controlled exposure and positive reinforcement, Burnaby can be trained to remain calm and focused on walks. Engaging him in focus exercises and rewarding him for calm behavior can improve his leash manners.
