Animal Profile

Buddy

Hello, my name is Buddy. My animal id is #219851. I am a desexed male brown dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 6 years 1 months 4 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 2/10/2025, with the surrender reason stated as other.

Buddy is at risk due to behavior reasons. Buddy's previous owner reports that he will growl over resources like food and toys. This type of behavior has presented itself in the care center as well. Buddy has been reactive to dogs as well, and will begin to leash bite when handlers move him away from the other dog. This behavior has escalated and Buddy as grabbed handlers sleeve and their fingers accidently. Neither have broke skin but the behavior does cause concern for handler safety. Buddy previously lived with young children and was friendly and outgoing with them. Medically, Buddy is overweight and is missing two toes (digits 2 & 3) on his right front paw.

What my friends at ACC say about me: I love getting pets and - you guessed it - snuggles! I need a home without cats or small animals. I would do best in a home with only adult humans. I'm ready to learn! I need a patient person who has the time to work on training with me. I don't always like to share my food, toys or bedding with other animals. I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe.

Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,Basic manners/poor impulse control,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Anxiety,Bite history (dog)

Potential challenges comments:: Resource Guarding: Buddy is reported to growl when owner would remove toys and reported to growl when Toddler would attempt to touch food bowl. We recommend that Buddy be left alone while eating, and that food guarding behavior modification steps (available at ASPCApro.org) be utilized if this behavior is problematic in their future home. Nothing should ever be taken directly out of Buddy's mouth, and any time something is removed they should be rewarded with a high value treat or toy. Please see handout on Resource Guarding. Basic Manners: Buddy's previous owner states that he will jump up often. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Sit" and "Off" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach them to control their impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward-based training only is recommended. Please see handout on Basic Manners. Fearful Defensive: Buddy has been observed to escalate to growling when uncomfortable while being handled. His previous owner states that he is fearful of loud noises and when being startled. It is important to move slowly with Buddy, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow them to initiate interactions with new people. They should never be forced to greet or to interact if they are not comfortable and soliciting attention. Please see handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression. Anxiety: Buddy's previous owner states that he is anxious. If Buddy displays anxious behavior in their future home, we recommend puzzle toys, long walks, and giving them other things to focus on to alleviate their anxiety. Positive reinforcement, force-free training should be used. Please see handout on Generalized Anxiety.
