He is social/affectionate, and likes to be in the kitchen and the living room. Has escalated when attempting to groom, growling and barking. Summary:: River's previous owner did not share any dog-to-dog history at this time. 06/07/26 River is introduced to two females separately (one familiar, one novel). He readily engages in bouncy play with the familiar female, exchanging body contact and mouthing lightly. Both take breaks intermittently before resuming play. When meeting a novel female, he remains loose and bouncy, exuberantly greeting her when guided into the yard. Both engage in bouncy play, exchanging play bows and body contact. The novel female appropriately corrects River whenever he attempts to mount her which he will listen to for brief spurts before engaging in play and attempting to mount again. Both play for several minutes. 06/06/26 River is introduced to a novel female while off leash. He readily approaches with a loose wiggly frame and will play bow at the female through the gate. When meeting face-to-face, River greets with a loose frame and will play bow at the female who appears a bit unsure at first but begins to loosen and reciprocate. River is bouncy and playful with the female throughout, but she becomes tense when he attempts to mount her, so River is guided away. 2025 Previous Stay According to River's previous owner(s), he lived with a Large Mixed Breed dog and was tolerant and playful. on/off leash unspecified. Interactions with any unfamiliar dogs are unknown. 10/09/25 River is used as today's helper dog on four different occasions. River is cooperative player that will appease his play mate by lying down with a soft body as they approach. River will rise as they approach him, immediately soliciting play using his paws to make contact and engaging in chase play. River will create space as the female dogs show discomfort, picking up on those social cues. River maintains a soft, wiggly body in each interaction. River can also be tolerant as a female dog attempts to mount him and he translates discomfort by moving away. Due to him creating distance, she snarls at him and he remains soft in frame, seeking attention from the handlers. River is returned back to kennel after his final interaction.

Summary (1):: Dog-Dog Cont'd: 10/08/25 River is used as today's helper dog. He is introduced to two female dogs on two separate occasions while on leash. Both times, River will appease the female dogs by lying down with a wagging tail. River will exchange body contact as well remain soft and wiggly. Due to the female dog's arousal on the first interaction, leashes are not dropped and both dogs are kept on leash. On his second interaction, River is persistent with the body contact he makes with the female dog, becoming overwhelming as she displays hackles and practices avoidance. River is kept away from the female dog due to not picking up on the on her social cues. 10/02/25 River is introduced initially at the gate to a novel female dog while off leash at the care center. River approaches the gate, appearing aloof not paying attention to the female dog. As they both maintain soft bodies along the gate line, the female dog is taken into Rivers pen to meet him face-to-face. As the female is guided in, she will approach River with a loose body, sniffing him. River whips around with a loose body, offers a bounce and engages in exchanging body contact with the female dog. River play bows before initiating chase play. As the female dog grows vocal, River will pancake in appeasement. Both dogs begin to fatigue and are separated before being returned to kennel.

Summary (3):: 9/24/26: River is standing at the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He begins jumping up at the door with a loose body as the handler unlocks the door he is able to be leashed while being distracted with treats. He then launches out of the kennel and begins to jump up onto the handler. He is able to be redirected when the handler tosses a treat trail. He then pulls on the way outside for a walk. On the walk, he continues to pull hard ahead while heavy panting and is comfortable approaching the handler to receive treats. He would stare at dogs that would pass by and is comfortable sitting and laying down to receive treats as they passed by. He pulls hard all the way back to his kennel and is able to enter with no issues. 9/18/26: River is standing at the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He begins to jump while heavy panting at the door as the handler unlocks it. He is able to be leashed while being distracted with treats and he then launches out of kennel. He then he begins to jump up and try to grab the leash and is able to be redirected with a treat scatter. Once outside, he pulls hard ahead while heavy panting on the way to the yard. In the yard, he is comfortable exploring around and would approach the handler to receive treats. He pulls hard on the way back to his kennel and is able to enter when treats are tossed inside.

Summary (4):: 9/17/26: River is standing at the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He begins to jump and paw at the door as the handler unlocks it. He is able to be leashed while being distracted with treats. Once leashed, he then launches out of kennel and instantly jumps up to grab the handler’s leash, and he begins to tug at it. He is able to drop the leash when the handler tosses treats on the ground, and he is able to continue walking on the way outside when the handler tosses a treat trail. Once outside, he pulls hard ahead while heavy panting and would hard stare at dogs that would pass by. He is able to be redirected wit treats and is then taken to the play yard. In the yard, he is comfortable exploring around and would approach the handler. He is able to sit and lay down to receive treats. He pulls hard on the way back to his kennel and is able to enter when treats are tossed inside. 09/15/26: River is lying down in his kennel and will approach the front with a soft frame, allowing the handler to place the leash over his head. He will then be brought out and walked through the D hallway to avoid stimulants in the SDA before going outside. While outside, River will pull hard on the leash. He will chase birds and then turn around and attempt to leash bite. He will be easily redirected and continue walking, but will attempt to leash bite again and will again be easily redirected. Once the session is concluded, River will be brought back into the care center and returned to his kennel safely without any issues. 9/14/26: An ACS reported that River began leash biting when exiting the kennel. When the ACS shortened their leash, River turned around to continue leash biting but got their hand. No blood was drawn and he released quickly. 9/11/2026: River is sitting on his karanda bed as the handler approaches. River is coaxed forward with some treats as the kennel door is opened. River is leashed with ease and taken out of the facility. River is moderately pulling on his way out but starts to walk by the handlers side once outside of the facility. The handler starts to mark rewards with the verbal expression of "YES". River catches on quickly and the handler starts to look for eye contact to mark the behavior for look. River catches on quickly and starts looking to the handler for rewards while walking. The handler brings river to the play yard and finds that River knows the commands sit, and down. River is successfully lured onto the karanda bed. River sits and lays down on command while on the karanda bed. River stays on the karanda bed and the handler slowly starts increasing duration and distance. The handler is able to increase the distance to 5 feet away for as long as 1 minute and 30 seconds. River stays on the Karanda bed until released. The handler takes River back into the facility and enters his kennel with ease.

Summary (5):: 9/4/26: River is standing at the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He is able to be leashed with ease and he then pulls hard on the way outside for a walk. On the walk, he continues to pull ahead while walking in front of the handler. He would stare at dogs that would pass by and is able to be redirected with treats he would jump up on the handler with a loose body and is comfortable receiving pets. He is able to return back to his kennel with no issues. 8/27/26: It is reported via the whiteboard that River is hyperactive, jumpy, leash biting... handler was able to redirect with treats 08/25/26: Handlers report River is leash biting immediately coming out of kennel and needs to be guided quickly out of the room. 8/19/26: River is standing at the front of his kennel when approached. He is easily leashed and walks out calmly. While walking towards the stairs, River attempts to greet a counselor and afterwards begins to pull hard towards the exit. Outside he moderately pulls up the side walk and for a brief moment bites at the leash as handler opens the side door. The leash biting is brief and quick to stop once the door is open. In the play pen, River engages with handler multiple times for treats and is able to be redirected into a sit when jumpy. During one instance, while handler was sitting on the elevated cement ridge, River hoped up and attempted to mouth at the handlers headband. Handler redirected with a treat and was able to stand with out issue. River remained loose and was taken for a brief walk where he'd check in with handler and sniff at the ground. 8/7/26: River is standing at the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He is able to be leashed with ease, and he then pulls hard on the way outside for a walk. On the walk, he continues to pull hard ahead and is comfortable approaching the handler to receive treats. He would jump up on the handler with a loose body and would lean into receive pets. He has no reactions to dogs or people, and he pulls hard on the way back to his kennel and enters with no issues.

Summary (6):: 7/31/2026: River is standing at the front of his kennel as handler approaches and is easily leashed. River takes a plush toy and holds it the majority of his walk out of the facility. River pulls hard on most of the walk but is easily redirected with the used of treats or squeaker. River pulls towards other dogs and people with a loose and wiggly body. River walks back to the facility and into his kennel with ease. 6/25/26: River is standing at the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He is able to be leashed with ease, and he then pulls hard on the way outside to the play yard for play group. In the yard, he has a loose and wiggly body as he greets the other dog at the gate. He is able to play and interact with the other dog. Please see dog to dog notes for more details. He pulls hard on the way back to his kennel and is able to enter with no issues. 6/24/26 (playgroup): River is at the front of the kennel as the handler approaches. He is leashed with ease and will pull hard to the play yard where he will engage with handlers socially and occasionally try to mount handlers. He is able to be redirected most times but has to be removed with leash once. (see dog-dog for more info) He stays out for two greets and will play with one of the dogs. River is returned to his kennel by another handler and is secured safely. 06/22/26 (Dog to Dog note): River is exchanged between handlers while outside and is escorted to the play yard to meet a female playmate. He immediately runs to the greeting gate for a nose to nose interaction and displays a play bow while maintaining a loose and wiggly body. His playmate does not wish to engage, and the interaction is concluded. River is brought back to his kennel safely without any issues. For more information, see Dog to Dog Assessment. 06/15/26 (PG): River is at the front of his kennel as the handler approaches. He jumps up at the door once, but then is leashed easily. Throughout the building and outside, River pulls hard and continuously. He is brought to the yard, where he runs around and sniffs. After his interaction, River pulls hard when returning to the building. He is returned to his kennel without issue. 06/08/26(Dog to Dog note): River is laying down in his kennel and quickly gets up to run to the front, allowing the handler to leash him with ease. He is then brought to the play yard to meet a female playmate. Once inside the yard, a drag leash is placed on him and he approaches the gate for a nose to nose greeting while displaying a loose and wiggly body. After the gate is opened, River begins pouncing around his playmate, sniffing her and soliciting play. He then escalates to mounting behavior, causing the other dog to begin displacement behaviors and disengage from the interaction. Summary (7):: 06/07/26(BA note): River is standing at the front of his kennel with a soft frame and allows the handler to leash him with ease. He is then brought to the assessment room where a drag leash is placed on him and he begins roaming the room freely. River allows all handling and completes the run portion without becoming aroused. He does not react to the knock assessment. During toy assessment, River grips the toy and playfully runs away before re-engaging appropriately with handlers. For more information, see Behavioral Assessment. 06/07/26 (PG): River is at the front of the kennel as the handler approaches. He is leashed with ease, and brought outside to the play yard. On the way, River pulls hard and walks at the end of the leash the entire time. After his interaction, River only pulls moderately while walking back into the building and is returned to his kennel with no issues. Older notes from previous atay at ACC: 10/08/25 (PG note): River is standing at the front of his kennel with a loose and wiggly body and allows the handler to leash him with ease. He is then brought to the play yard to meet a playmate. Once inside, a collar and drag leash are placed on him. He approaches the greeting gate, and both dogs exchange a loose, wiggly nose-to-nose greeting. When the gate is opened, River displays play bows and self-handicapping behaviors, making himself smaller to invite his playmate to engage. His playmate becomes increasingly anxious, and the handlers decide to separate them for safety. River remains in the yard to meet another playmate. See dog-to-dog note for more information. 09/30/25 (BA) River is lying down as the handler approaches. He rises, displaying a still, neutral frame, allowing the handler to leash him. River will trot over to the assessment room maintain a neutral frame. As River enters the meet and greet in order to enter the assessment room, River will pull, moving quickly as the dogs react to him while in their crates. River will enter the room, remaining neutral but becoming looser as he spends his time there. (Please refer to BA in the Behavior section for more insight). River is returned to kennel where he will enter his kennel with no issue.

Potential challenges comments:: Destructive behavior: River is noted to have destructive tendencies in the prior home. Providing consistent structure, mental and physical enrichment, and clear boundaries may help reduce destructive behaviors moving forward. Please see the handout on Destructive behavior. Basic manners/poor impulse control: River has demonstrated a lack of basic manners in the care center, jumping up onto staff. It is recommended that default behaviors such as “Leave it,” “Sit/Stay,” and “Down” are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach her to control her impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward-based training only is recommended. See handout on Basic Manners and Impulse Control. Handling/touch sensitivity: Has escalated when attempting to groom, growling and barking. Future grooming and handling should be approached gradually, with low-pressure techniques and positive associations to help reduce stress and prevent defensive escalation. Please see the handout on Handling/touch sensitivity. Fearful: River becomes fearful in response to loud noises, such as dogs barking, while in the care center. This sensitivity suggests noise-related anxiety and a need for emotional support in stimulating environments. Training should focus on desensitization to sound triggers, creating a calm and predictable routine, and using enrichment and positive reinforcement to help River feel more secure and confident. Please see the handout on decompression period. Separation anxiety/Anxiety: River is noted to chew through multiple walls in his previous home. We recommend that potential adopters feel comfortable with separation anxiety behaviors and are prepared to manage and positively modify them should they appear in a home environment. She would do best in a home where a person is at home for a large part of the day or with a plan so she is not alone for long periods of time. See handout on Separation Anxiety. Leash Biting | Low threshold for arousal: River has displayed leash btiing behaviors in care. He has also mounted a handler during a walk. Please see handout on arousal.
