Summary:: 10/29/25: Duncan greets another dog at the gate with a tense body and high, tense, rapidly wagging tail.
Summary (6):: 11/3/25: Duncan is at the front of the kennel with a tense body staring intensely at the handler. The handler is easily able to leash Duncan using a treat lure. Duncan is taken to the street for a walk. When passing dogs Duncan fixates on them and is unable to be redirected using coaxing or squeakie sounds. He pulls towards them with a tense body and as the handler attempts to move him away Duncan continues to look back at the dog and pull towards. Duncan reacts this way towards every dog. When returning to kennel Duncan pulls towards the dogs in pop up crates and is easily guided to kennel. 11/02/25: Duncan is at the front of his kennel as handler approaches. Handler notes he is salivating heavily and foam is covering his lower lip, handler offers a treat and Duncan is only half interested, biting down on it but not chewing or swallowing it. He jumps up a few times at the kennel door while vocalizing as the door is unlocked and he is leashed before exiting kennel on a short leash and walking into the elevator with handler. Duncan is taken to the street for his walk, while outside he sees many dogs and his reactions range from stopping and staring at them with a tense body until they pass to pulling moderately toward them until he passes them. He is difficult to redirect at these points, when passing people he generally ignores them. Duncan stops very frequently to scent mark and relieve himself. He pulls mildly when walking and after walking with handler for a while he is brought back inside. His leash is clipped and upon exiting the elevator he pulls hard back toward his kennel, he is returned with treats tossed into kennel and interaction is ended shortly after. 11/1/25: (PM WALKS) Duncan is lying down in kennel with a whale eye and tense body. Handler unlocks kennel and Duncan stands up. He is easily leashed and taken outside and to the street. Duncan does not take treats offered. On the street, he walks with the handler with a neutral body, occasionally side eying the handler. Duncan hard stares at dogs with his head raised as they pass by. Handler calls to him and he does not react. Mild leash tension is used and Duncan stays firm. Duncan is then physically moved away breaking his line of sight. He then continues walking. Duncan is brought back to the shelter and is returned to kennel with tossing treats.
Summary (7):: 11/1/25: ACS reported Duncan was snapping toward their hand when trying to remove lock, additionally Duncan was observed to intensely visually fixate on dogs on street and was difficult to redirect. When using leash-pressure to redirect and pull Duncan away, handler noted they felt Duncan's teeth make contact with their leg. Unclear if this was an attempt at redirection or unintentional as Duncan was behind handler being pulled in a different direction than he was looking. 10/30/25: Duncan is standing at the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He is able to be leashed with ease and he is taken outside to the yard. In the yard, he has a neutral body frame and would jump up on the bench to avoid the rain. He would hard stare at a dog in the next pen and is unable to be redirected with treats or toys. He had no interest in treats the handler would offer. He is then taken back to his kennel with no issues. 10/22/25: Duncan is at the front of his kennel with a loose body as the handler approaches. The handler is able to leash him and bring him out the room. On the street, Duncan walks ahead of the handler with light tension on the leash, occasionally stopping to relieve himself. Duncan shows no interest to passersby. He is then brought in for his assessment. During the assessment, Duncan hard stares, lip licks, and presents a tense body (see assessment notes). The handler leashes Duncan and the assessor bellybands his underside. While walking in, Duncan headwhips towards the assessor a few times, as well as stop a few times too. Both handlers return Duncan to his kennel and remove both the bellyband and leash. 10/22/25: Duncan has been observed to refuse entering his kennel. As one handler has him on leash, another handler places a bellyband underneath. While walking into the room, Duncan headwhips a few times. He briefly stops walking and then continues. Both handlers are able to return him to kennel and remove the leash and belly band with ease.

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Duncan so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Recommend no dog parks,Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to fearful behavior we recommend a home with no children. No Dog Parks: Due to the potential for redirection we recommend no trips to the dog park. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.
Potential challenges: : Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration
Potential challenges comments:: Fearful Defensive: Duncan has been observed to baulk when returning to kennel. When a sling is used Duncan is obsvered to thrash back and forth. During his medical exam Duncan was obsvered to show whale eye. Recently Duncan has been obsvered to begin snapping at the handlers hands when they go to unlock his kennel. It is important to move slowly with Duncan, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow them to initiate interactions with new people. They should never be forced to greet or to interact if they are not comfortable and soliciting attention. Please see handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression. On Leash Reactivity: Duncan has been obsvered to intensely fixate on other dogs, this behavior is unable to be redirected and even when moving away from the stimuli Duncan will remain fixated. During one instance as a handler was pulling him away, they felt his teeth on their leg. Duncan will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than other dogs. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration.
