Amigos
Hello, my name is Amigos. My animal id is #237153. I am a desexed male orange tabby cat at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 8 years 1 months 4 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 9/19/2025, with the surrender reason stated as not a fit - too many animals already.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.
Pre-Screener FormAmigos is on the at-risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and is deteriorating in the Adoptions room. He is now displaying signs of high FAS and no longer is tolerant of petting/touch - escalating to fearful defensive behaviors. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

What my friends at ACC say about me: Amigos arrived at the shelter with little known about his behavior in his previous home. He's had some difficulty adjusting to the shelter environment and will need a bit of extra patience and TLC as he settles in. With time, understanding, and positive reinforcement, Amigos is sure to come out of his shell and show his true personality.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 9/27/25 FB20 In cardboard box. I toss treats that he sniffs. He sniffs at tool, looking up cautiously with tilted ears and a tense face. He hisses when tool is moved closer. More treats are dropped into his box and interaction is ended. 9/30/25 FB06 Upon approach, Amigos is laying in his box, ears forward watching my moves. When I opened the cage door, his ears flattened and he began hissing. I offered treats on the tool where he proceeded to hiss and swat the tool. Interaction is ended. 10/06/25 When I approached the cage Amigos is laying in his cardboard box. I slowly approach him with the scratcher tool that he immediately begins hissing at. As I moved it closer he kept hissing and jumped up on the ledge. I then placed some squeeze up on the tool and pushed it through the food slot where he hissed again and swatted very hard at it. I ended the interaction. 10/17/25 FB79 Today, Amigos displayed the same behaviors as the previous enrichment note and remained very tense while hissing and growling as i attempted to offer treats. 10/23/25 FB58 IN his box and immediately hisses, spits, and lunges when he sees me. He then jumps up onto the shelf with a really tense face and body, ears flat, continuing to hiss and lunge. He shows no interest in treats popped in through the holes in the side of the cage due to his high level of FAS. 10/28/25 FB06 Amigos was on top of the ledge with wide eyes, flattened ears and hissing, in a lunging position. I opened the food slot and approached him slowly with the scratcher as he spit and swatted with force at. 10/31/25 FB58 In den and hidden, hisses when the cage door is opened - I offer a catnip/treat brown bag and leave him to explore it on his own. When I check back later, he is sitting out on top of the den and continues to hiss and growl before he lunges once. I leave some dry treats and again leave him to explore on his own. 11/04/25 FB06 Amigos was sitting on top of his den when I approached. I lifted the cage cover and spoke softly to him as he hissed and growled, and lunged once. He then hopped up on top of the ledge continuing to hiss and growl. I opened the food slot and left him some treats and ended the interaction. 11/06/25 FB20 Amigos is on top of den halfway climbing up to cubby. When I crack the door open he hisses. I open the door a little further and extend a scratcher tool with treats. Amigos hisses, sniffs the tool, and then swats it with medium intensity, hissing. I wait until he stops hissing and calms and slowly retract the tool, leaving the treats. As I lock the kennel I hear spitting and swatting from Amigos. GAN
ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Subdued
VOCAL:: Quiet
CHARACTER TYPE: : Bold,Shy ,Timid,Skittish,Independent
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful,New home adjustment period,Adult cat socialization
Potential challenges comments:: 10/11/25 Upon meeting with Amigos again, he is displaying a high level of FAS as distance increasing defensive aggression when interactions are attempted. He does not appear to be adjusting to the shelter well. 11/11/25 After reviewing Amigos' animal behavior and record - it appears that the behavior of one of the other cats in the home was entered for Amigo as well, or the previous owner just repeated the same info. Due to this, we cannot be certain of Amigos' true behaviors in his previous home, and the level of socialization received. As an older cat, socialization would be more difficult and require a long period of commitment. He is not doing well in a shelter environment and continues to display a high level of FAS and defensive aggression.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : New Hope Only
RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home
Recommendations comments:: Due to the behavior seen in shelter and needing a longer time to warm up, the behavior team feels Amigos would do best in an adult-only home where they would be able to acclimate in a calm environment.
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: 9/22/25 Amigos is in the back of his kennel with wide eyes, forward ears, and his paws tucked away when the assessor opens the kennel door; when he is spoken to softly, he harshly hisses as his ears flatten into his head and his tail can be seen wrapping around his body. Amigos continues to hiss when treats are tossed in as well, as when the pointer tool is slowly brought close for him to sniff. His hissing continues as the tool is brought to the top of his head for petting, and he turns his face into the corner of the kennel while continuing to hiss as he is pet on his cheeks and under his chin. Amigos remained still, and when the tool was run down his back/around his body, he snapped his head back, harshly hissing once again - then starting to low growl and grumble with his eyes still dilated and airplane ears. Pick up was not attempted at this time. 10/11/25 Upon re-eval, Amigos is continuing to display high levels of FAS and appears to be deteriorating in shelter. On approach, he is sitting hunched in his box with just his ears and eyes visible. As the cage door is slowly opened, he hisses and lunges forward out of the box with a tense face and body before he jumps up onto the shelf and sits in the back corner with a tense face and body and tail wrapped as he hisses and growls. When the scratcher tool is offered out, he hisses and watches with wide eyes as the tool passes along his side. When the tool comes near his head, his ears flatten and he hisses, before he moves forward quickly and bites the tool holding on for a moment. 11/12/25 Amigos continues to to display high levels of FAS and escalates immediately to defensive aggression due to his high level of fear. When the cage is approached, he will hiss from behind the cage cover - once the cover is lifted, he will; hiss, low growl, spit, and lunge. He is entirely avoidant of pets and can escalate to swatting when pushed. Due to his high reactivity and continued deterioration, Rescue continues to be the best pathway for him. Amigos is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. He has tried to swat, bite, lunge, is extremely fearful in the shelter environment, and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
