Rose Bud
Hello, my name is Rose Bud . My animal id is #217004. I am a desexed female white dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 3 years 8 months old.
I came into the shelter as a stray on 12/18/2024.
Rose Bud is at risk due to behavioral reasons. Rose Bud was observed to be highly dog reactive while at the Care Centers. She has been noted to consistently pull hard towards dogs while growling, tense body, despite having ample distance and space. She is also not able to be redirected with treats, sounds, or verbal cues. Recently her reactivity has been escalating; Rose Bud has begun to now jumping towards the end of leash and continues to be difficult to redirect. When handlers try to block line of sight with other dogs, Rose Bud is observed to be persistent in trying to re-establish visual by pulling hard in the direction of the dog. Rose Bud is non-reactive to people on leash, and is aloof with familiar staff. Medically, she is noted to have undetermined allergies but otherwise is healthy.

My adoption fee is sponsored by a generous donor! What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! It is unknown if I have ever lived with other animals or children. I have potential behavior challenges that staff will address with you when you meet me. I am looking for a home with a patient person. I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I'll need daily interaction with you as I get used to my new life. I will need appropriate toys and positive outlets for my energy. It could be with you! Click here to learn more about the adoption process! My #BoroughBreak Buddy Writes: Although Rose Bud was initially fearful around new sights and sounds, she quickly opened up and blossomed during our outing to a quiet wooded park. She loved sniffing and exploring and would be a great hiking or running companion. Rose Bud would thrive in a calm environment outside of the city where she can relax and be her true curious self. She was a great car companion and calmly observed the world going by. She enjoys dashing through streams, playing with sticks, and having a soft plushy to rest her head on at the end of the day. My #BoroughBreak Buddy Writes: Rose Bud might be timid at first, but give her the time to warm up to you and she'll blossom into the sweet dog she truly is. This gal is smart! She knows how to give paw, sit on command & is very treat motivated. She has been in overlooked for far too long and I simply cannot understand why. She is truly an incredible dog, and whoever adopts her will have a great addition to their family.

Summary (2):: 08/20/25: Rose Bud is laying in her bed toward back of kennel as handler approaches. When unlocking kennel door Rose Bud approaches with loose body, jumps once exuberantly at kennel door. Rose Bud is easily leashed, walks out of kennel with moderate pulling, exits MACC to driveway with neutral but forward body. Rose Bud sniff treats, but does not take any. Rose Bud allows light petting on her middle back with neutral body. Rose Bud is maintains neutral body and consistent mild-moderate pulling on walk. Rose Bud sees a SMB approximately 30 feet away, she tenses body and pulls toward with hard pressure. As the SMB turns away and increases distance Rose Bud is not pulling toward, but is tense bodied and keeping visual fixation. Rose Bud recovers after the SMB is increasing distance. Rose Bud walks back to MACC, re-enters kennel without issue. 8/15/25: Rose Bud is sitting at the front of her kennel panting heavily. As handler unlocks the door she jumps straight up, all paws off the floor. She takes treat offered then spits it out. She is easily leashed and removed from kennel. She runs quickly until the end of the leash and jumps up and spins. On the street, she pulls hard ahead not stopping to smell or check in with handler. She stretches as she comes to the front and is easily leashed. Rose Bud is taken to the street for a brief walk. At first she keeps her distance from handler, often whale eyeing up, lip liking, and yawning. When pet she does not flinch, but she will occasionally duck her head, lip lick, and tucked her tail once. Handler does not continue to attempt and pet. She does not take treats, but does react to the use of her name. She moderately - hard pulls throughout walk, and does not react to people. When spotting another dog in front of the care centers she begins to pull very hard, postured forward with a tense body, and lets out a small low growl. Handler has to use consistent leash pressure to pull her away. She was fixated until the dog was no longer in sight. When entering PAC, Rose Bud thrashed once in a retreating manner but ultimately scurried din her kennel with the use of leash pressure.
Summary (3):: 8/1/25: Rose Bud is at the front of her kennel, sitting and panting. As handler unlocks the door she jumps up on the door once. She is easily leashed and removed from kennel. She exits kennel and kennel room with moderate leash pressure. Upon exiting driveway there are very loud construction noise (jack hammer) immediately to the right of the driveway, same side of street. Rose Bud furrows brow and head whips left and right several time, she begins to recover as handler takes her left (away) from the noise. Upon crossing the street Rose Bud maintains moderate, consistent leash pulling, but begins to dissipate the further away from the construction she gets. Rose Bud does check in visually for verbal cues, however shows no interest in treats either handed to her or dropped in front of her. Rose Bud hears a LMB with two MOP approximately 50 feet away (diagonally across the street on 1st avenue). The LMB is barking exuberantly at one of the MOP is a social manner. As Rose Bud hears this, she tenses her body, head is up, and is pulling toward the dog low-growling. She maintains this posture even when verbally cued; squeaker sound is ineffective. Leash pressure is used to pull he away and break line of sight. Once line of sight is broken, she recovers to neutral body and checks in visually with handler when verbally cued. Rose Bud sees two SMB being walked by MOP approaching on same side of sidewalk, approximately 40 feet away. Rose Bud again tenses body, furrows brow and pulls toward. Handler again uses leash pressure to pull away across the street. Rose Bud walks back to MACC with minimal leash pulling, and does not seem to have a reaction to construction noise when passing. Summary (7):: 4/7/25: Rose Bud is laying down in her crate as handler approaches. She is able to be leashed with ease and then she bolts out of he crate. She then pulls on the way outside for a walk. On the walk, she would walk with a tense body frame and would pull ahead with her body low to the ground. She would try to shy away and pull towards the sides to move away from people that were approaching and that were behind her. She continued to walk with her body low to the ground as they got further away. On the way back to her crate, she plants to ground and then tries to pull hard away into in the closet by the elevator due to a person behind her. Once that person was out of sight, she pulled hard down the hallway and back into her crate. 4/5/25: Rose Bud is found laying down at the front of the crate and as the handler approaches, she stands up. The handler leashes Rose Bud with ease and brings her out of the room. While walking towards the backyard, Rose Bud tries to dart towards a dog in a crate, but the handler pulls her away. Upon entering a play pen, the handler placed a drag leash on Rose Bud. Rose Bud then sprinted back and forth in the play pen. Once she slowed down, she began to bark and paw at another dog in the adjacent pen. The handler called her over, and she began to bark at another dog in the other adjacent pen. As another handler with a dog walked past, Rose Bud continuously barked and followed the dog. The handler then placed their leash on Rose Bud and pulled her away from the fence. The handler sat down on the bench and held the leash. As Rose Bud was fixated on a dog in the adjacent kennel, the handler distracted her with treats and pets, in which she received. The handler scratched her lower back, which caused Rose Bud to become over aroused. She began to jump on the handler repeatedly until she stopped on her own. The handler was able to remove the drag leash from Rose Bud. Rose Bud was brought into the building and her crate with ease. 3/15/25: Rose Bud displays fearful behavior during her walks. Whenever people walk past her, she would wither flinch or duck her head, or watch them walk past. She has also displayed dog reactivity. She would fixate on dogs that far away from her, and pull towards dogs in pop-up crates. 2/22/25: Rose Bud has been observed to be standing at the front of her pop up crate panting *Due to lack of text space, previous notes can be given upon request*
Date of intake:: 12/18/2024
Summary:: Relaxed body wagging tail
Date of initial:: 12/18/2024
Summary:: Allows handling but needs slow approach, warms up over time
ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Rose Bud so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 3
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Recommend no dog parks
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to fearful behavior we recommend a home with no children. Recommend no dog parks: Due to the concerning behaviors that Rose Bud has shown during playgroup (see DOG-DOG SUMMARY), we feel that Rose Bud should not visit dog parks. The Behavior Department recommends that she be socialized in a more controlled setting until her behavior toward other dogs can be further addressed.
Potential challenges: : Fearful,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration
Potential challenges comments:: Fearful: Rose Bud has been observed to be fearful during her stay in the care center. Noted to have a low body and tucked tail while interacting with handlers. It should always be their choice to approach a new person or thing. Rose Bud would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to their new surroundings. Please see handout on Decompression Period. On Leash Reactivity: Rose Bud has been observed to become tense and stare at dogs while on leash. This behavior is able to be redirected easily. Rose will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than other dogs. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration.
