The primary handler guides him off the couch by tossing treats away. They present the toy again and Magneto presents the same behavior.

Summary:: Due to entering the facility as a stray, there is no prior dog-to-dog history recorded. 9/19/26: Magneto is introduced to a novel intact female and is neutral at the fence with a mid level flagged tail and perked ears. The other dog approaches and Magneto sniffs nose to nose through the fence and gives a few mid level wags. He is let into the yard and is easily led across, independently sniffing and using the bathroom. The two approach and Magneto circles and sniffs, giving high wags. He does a chin over and then continues attempting to circle and sniff. The other dog lowers herself and does not engage in interaction, Magneto is brought across the yard. He interacts with his handler and takes treats, easily redirecting his attention away from the other dog. The other dog does not reapproach and the meet is ended. 8/8/26: Magneto is introduced to a novel intact female and approaches the fence with a tense body, hackles raised, and high flagged tail. The other dog begins rubbing on the fence and Magneto gives a couple high wags and sniffs her through the fence. He attempts to pee on the other dog, then sniffs in the catch pen before reapproaching remaining tense with a high flagged curled inward tail. The other dog disengages and he sniffs the ground nearby where she was rubbing.

Summary (6):: 9/19/26: Magneto is at the front of his kennel with a neutral body, stretching as the handler approaches; he is easily leashed and brought out the room. Magneto is walked down the stairs and brought into the yard for playgroup (see D2D notes). Before the interaction, the handler pets Magneto on his back and he presents a loose body, leaning into them; he jumps up very high towards the handler's face twice and disengages. Magneto also takes treats from the handler with mild pressure. During and after the interaction, Magneto receives pets and treats from the other handler, as well as jumps up high to their face. Magneto is brought inside and walked to the room, but he begins to baulk as they approach. The handler shows Magneto treats, and he stands up and walks to the lure. Once they are at his kennel, the handler tosses treats inside and Magneto climbs in to eat them. The handler removes their leash with ease. 9/9/26: Magneto is reported to pull hard and may need a harness. 9/6/26: Magneto is at front of kennel with a neutral body where he is easily leashed and pulled from kennel. Coming out of kennel he pulls hard. While waiting for the elevator he tries to pull to the crates sitting there with dogs in them, handler keeps him away but he continues to try until he gets into the elevator. He saw a dog down the street at a distance and stopped walking and stared, handler did a u-turn and Magneto followed along and did not look back at the dog. After his walk he was returned to his kennel with no issue. - 8/30/26 (Assessment): Magneto is at the front of his kennel where he is easily leashed and taken for a brief street walk before his assessment (Please see assessment notes for details). While on walk he walked next to handler with a slack leash and a neutral body. He would stop and try to eat everything that he saw on the sidewalk. When he saw a dog he pulled hard in the direction of the dog with a tense body and furrowed brows. During his assessment he was social with handlers, but did guard the toy. He was returned to kennel with no issue

Summary (7):: 8/26/26:Magneto is at the front of the kennel with a neutral body. He pulls hard out of the kennel room and towards the street. On the street, Magneto fixates on dogs, handler uses squeakers and treats and can not be redirected. He is kept away with leash pressure. When dogs are out of sight, Magneto jumps up on the handler exuberantly, he then sits at the handlers feet for treats with a wiggly body and wagging tail. He takes the treats gently and is walked back to the shelter. He is taken back upstairs and returned to kennel without issue. 8/15/26: Magneto is at the front of his kennel, pawing at the door and barking when handler approaches. He is leashed with a treat lure and taken out of the kennel. He pulls hard all the way out of the room but has no interest toward neighboring dogs. While waiting for elevator Magneto attempts to exuberantly jump on handler with loose body. He is distracted with treats and cued to sit. Once in elevator, Magneto continues sitting next to the handler and gently takes treats. Magneto pulls hard all the way to the street and, once he gets there, he relieves himself. Magneto continues walking slightly ahead of the handler with mild leash tension. He will stare at other dogs but is distracted with treats and verbal recall and quickly disengages. He has no interest toward people passerby. Magneto is social and responsive with handler. He gently takes treats and follows commands "sit" and "paw". His body is loose with soft face most of the walk. During return handler is able to pre-clip the leash and bring Magneto back into his kennel with ease 8/8/26: Magneto is at the front of his kennel with a soft body; he is easily leashed and brought out the room. Magneto also attempts to pull towards a dog in a crate, but the handler shortens the leash. While going downstairs, Magneto pulls ahead with moderate tension. He is brought to the yard for playgroup (see D2D notes). Afterwards, the handler brings Magneto inside and returns him to his kennel. 7/27/26: Magneto is at the front of his kennel with a neutral body as handler approaches. He is then easily leashed and removed from his kennel. He has a hard pull forward and is taken for a street walk. Throughout the walk, he would continue to pull hard forward - as handler would call his name, he would quickly look and then would continue to pull forward. Magneto then spots a dog and would become tense with raised hackles, while lip licking. Handler attempts to use squeaker sounds and treats, which he wasn't receptive towards. Shortly after, he's brought back inside for his assessment - on the way to the office, he spot the same dog and would begin to whine as handler kept a short leash. After the assessment - he is easily returned to kennel with no issue.

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Magneto so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in addition to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.

Potential challenges comments:: Resource Guarding: Magneto has been observed to become tense and hover over toys in his possession. Nothing should ever be taken directly out of Magneto's mouth, and any time something is removed they should be rewarded with a high value treat or toy. Please see handout on Resource Guarding. On Leash Reactivity: Magneto has been observed to become tense and pull hard with raised hackles towards other dogs while on leash. This behavior was not able to be redirected. During his assessment when the secondary handler entered the room, he had a tense forward body with raised hackles. Magneto will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than dogs and other stimuli. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration. Leash Biting: During his assessment, Magneto began jumping up towards the leash during the jog portion. We recommend walking them with a toy to dissuade them from grabbing the leash. Positive reinforcement, force-free training is advised to teach them to focus on you rather than grabbing the leash.
