Lilo

Hello, my name is Lilo. My animal id is #236257. I am a female black dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 2 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a stray on 9/11/2025.

Pre-Screener Form

Lilo is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns in care, and in her previous home. Lilo in her previous home as two bite incidents. One where Lilo was chasing a cat, and when the owner intervened Lilo redirected onto the owner, breaking skin and drawing blood. Lilo in another instance was at the park and grabbed a small dog, that did not break skin. In care, Lilo has been fearful in care, avoiding some interaction with select staff and not acclimating to the care center environment. Medically, Lilo has some mild skin issues, and is currently being treated for CIRDC.

Her finder described her as a very active and playful dog who would enjoy spending most of her time in the living room while she played with toys, especially plushies. Lilo was reported to be nervous during car rides and was given a dry and wet food diet from Fresh Pet, favoring chicken bites as a treat. The finder did report 2 bites while in the home - one incident was a redirection onto the finder from chasing the resident cat, and the second was to a smaller dog; the bite to the smaller dog did not break skin. During her intake, Lilo was highly fearful and reluctant to walk on a leash, thrashing and flailing as she was walked to her kennel. She has warmed up to the select handlers and has shown social behaviors, but does revert to fearful behaviors when introduced to novel stimuli. Due to the concerns reported in the home and during her stay in care, we recommend that Lilo to be placed in an adult-only home through a New Hope Partner that can allow her the time and space to decompress at her own pace.

Summary:: Due to entering the facility as a stray, there is no prior dog-to-dog history recorded. 09/17/25 Lilo is introduced at the gate to a novel male dog while off leash at the care center. Lilo will approach the gate with an exaggerated approach, jumping in and out of prey bow while huffing. Lilo runs away and returns to the gate line, prey bowing and then seeking attention from the handler present in her pen. As she prey bows for a third time, this time she lip curls, causing the male dog to be frustrated and both dogs must be moved away from the gate. Lilo is returned to kennel.

Summary (7):: 9/18: Lilo is seen hard barking at a neighboring dog while in her crate. A handler readjusts her kennel cover to reduce visual stressors. 09/17/25 (PG Note): Lilo is standing at the front of her kennel with a loose and wiggly body and will allows handler to leash her with ease and is escorted to the play yard to meet a playmate. Once inside the yard, a drag leash is placed on her. Lilo displays a play bow with a wagging tail and darts toward the gate to greet. As her mouth tenses, she begins hard barking at her playmate, appearing conflicted in her behavior. Lilo is removed from the play yard and returned to her kennel safely without any issues. For more information, see Dog-to-Dog Note. 9/14/25: As the handler approached the crate, Lilo rushed forward with a loose wiggly body and allowed handler to leash her as she pushed her nose out. Lilo had no issue walking out of meet and greet but began to crouch and pull as dogs began to bark in their kennels. On the ramp, she paused and jumped on the handler looking around with her ears pinned, seemingly in response to trucks and traffic. Once in the play yard, Lilo sniffed around for a second before getting the zoomies, pooping and then zooming some more. The handler knelt down to see if Lilo would engage. Lilo leaned in for pets but was hyper vigilant. Lilo was leashed and untucked her tail on the ramp. However, once in the building Lilo crouched and walked with a tense body back to her crate. 09/13/25: When the handler approaches Lilo will retreat to the back of the kennel. The handler will toss treats and Lilo will come forward to take them cautiously. When the handler presents the leash, Lilo will retreat to the back of the kennel. The handler is able to leash Lilo easily although she is avoidant. Once leashed, Lilo will willingly follow the handler out of the kennel and out of the room. Once the dogs in the neighboring kennels begin barking she will begin halt, head whipping very briefly. The handler is able to coax and encourage Lilo forward which she does. Lilo will follow the handler out of the care center. When on leash Lilo will spend her time smelling the ground and exploring her new surroundings. Lilo will stand on the handler with her front paws, soliciting attention while lip licking in appeasement. Lilo is escorted back to the care center. When approaching her crate, the Lilo will trot with her and she will enter willingly. Lilo is secured safely.

Summary:: highly fearful, thrashing, flailing, shaking

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),No cats,Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to Lilo's high levels of fear displayed during her intake and while in care, in addition to her bite history, we recommend an adult-only home at this time. No cats: Due to the concerning behaviors with the resident cat, we recommend that Lilo not be placed in a home with cats or small animals. Place with a New Hope Partner: Due to all noted concerns displayed in a home environment and during her stay, the behavior department recommends Lilo be placed with a New Hope placement partner who is able to provide an experienced adult-only foster home. A period of decompression is recommended to allow Lilo to acclimate comfortably to her new environment; force-free, reward-based training only is advised when introducing Lilo to new and unfamiliar situations. Consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended for guidance to safely manage/modify any behavior Lilo presents with outside of the care centers.
