Bean
Hello, my name is Bean. My animal id is #233984. I am a desexed male brown dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 3 years 1 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 8/13/2025, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- landlord won't allow.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Medically Bean has Dental Disease and retained deciduous teeth. Bean came into the care center as an owner surrender due to moving. His prior owners noted that Bean knows, "sit" and "paw" (but only when given treats). He loves going to the park, and playing with stuffed toys. In the care center Bean displays fearful behavior and his avoidance of handlers, and he will attempt to hide. Given this level of fear and stress, Bean would benefit from placement with an experienced new hope partner who can provide a patient, supportive environment and allow for slow, positive socialization at Bean's own pace.

Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful,Anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Strength/leash pulling
Potential challenges comments:: Resource Guarding: Bean demonstrates resource guarding behaviors, particularly around food, toys, and treats. He exhibits protective behaviors such as hovering and maintaining a tense body posture when in possession of valued items, indicating discomfort with sharing or having these items approached. Please see the handout on Resource Guarding. Handling/Touch Sensitivity: Bean shows significant sensitivity to handling, especially when restrained, startled, or when his paws are touched. His previous family reported difficulty with basic grooming tasks such as bathing, brushing, and nail trimming. Please see the handout on Handling/Touch Sensitivity. Fearful Behavior: Bean displays consistent signs of fearfulness in unfamiliar or stressful situations. During his medical exam, he was timid, shaking, and resistant to handling. At the care center, he continues to show avoidance behaviors, including hiding and trembling during interactions, indicating a need for a gentle, patient approach. Please see the handout on decompression period. Anxiety: In his previous home, Bean exhibited signs of anxiety through self-directed behaviors such as chewing or pulling out hair from his back and hindquarters. This may be a coping mechanism for stress and should be monitored alongside environmental and behavioral interventions. Consult a vet or behaviorist if self-directed behaviors persist, and consider behavior modification strategies to reduce stress. Please see the handout on generalized anxiety. On-Leash Reactivity/Barrier Frustration: Bean reacts to certain stimuli, particularly cats and large dogs, while on walks. His response includes barking and growling, which may stem from frustration or fear. Structured training and controlled exposure could help reduce these reactive behaviors. Please see the handout on On-Leash Reactivity/Barrier Frustration. Strength/Leash Pulling: Bean is reported to pull strongly on the leash during walks, which may be due to excitement, lack of leash training, or a desire to reach stimuli quickly. A focus on loose-leash walking techniques and appropriate equipment may improve his walking behavior. Please see the handout on Strength/Leash Pulling.
