Summary:: According to Faith's previous owner(s), around familiar dogs, she is tolerant and around unfamiliar dogs she is shy, preferring contact on her own terms. 03/19/25 Faith is introduced at the gate to a novel male dog while off leash at the care center. Faith will greet the novel male dog at the gate with a soft frame. Due to the novel male dog's lack of focus, she becomes aloof, walking away and ignoring the novel male dog. Faith seeks attention from one of the handlers present. Faith is returned to kennel, concluding the interaction.
Summary (4):: 03/31/25 Faith is at the front of her kennel vocalizing at the handler as they unlock he kennel door. Faith has her collar clipped with a drag leash and she is taken out for a walk. Before exiting the kennel room, she gently body checks handler with a loose, wiggly frame. Faith will proceed towards the exit displaying a neutral, still frame. As they exit the facility, Faith maintains her moderate pace alongside the handler. They will go for an extended walk where she will explore different dirt patches as well as collect treats gently when administered. Faith is returned to the facility where she enters the building as well as her kennel with no issue 3/24: As a handler is putting up kennel paperwork, Faith can be seen at the front of her kennel yowling and barking. 3/20/25: Faith is siting in her kennel as handler approaches. She was not interested in treats and is able to be clipped to her collar with no issues. She pulls on the way to the behavior room. In the room, she would approach the handler with her hackles up and slowly. She would sniff and then walk away. Once comfortable, she shook off and was approaching all the handlers with a soft body and wagging tail. When the handler sat on the couch, she also jumped up and laid her body on their side. She was comfortable receiving pets from the handler. When another handler entered the room, she ran up to them with a loose wiggy body and loose waging tail and received pets from them. She would slowly walk on the way back to kennel. She was nervous of the dogs barking in one of the rooms, and was walked back to kennel in the hallway next to vet services. She tries to come out of kennel while inside and the handlers were able to block the door and un clip her before closing the door and locking it. 03/19/25 Behavior remains consistent from the day prior. She is taken to the training room where she will be off-leash, with a drag attached to collar, free roaming the room. She becomes nervous as more handlers enter the room, however, she pushes her self to be social, slowly approaching them and scenting them. Although Faith displays her hackles, she is cautious when approaching and will disengage when overwhelmed, walking away or towards a handler she is most comfortable with. She is returned to kennel with no issue. Faith greets the handler standing in front of his kennel door with a loose frame. Faith collar is easily clipped and is escorted to the play yards for a dog-to-dog interaction, please refer to Faith 's Behavior assessment and dog-to-dog for more details. Faith is returned to kennel and secured safely.
Summary (5):: 03/18/25 Faith is standing neutrally in kennel as the handler approaches. When the handler calls out her name, they easily collar her in kennel, connecting a drag leash for her comfort. They proceed to the live room where the handler allows her to free roam. She will make her way over with a loose, wiggly frame. As they enter the room, she begins to explore and collect any treats on the ground. She will allow petting, leaning in for rubs. They will remain in the live room for the remainder of the time. Faith is returned to kennel where she will trot over to her kennel room, entering her kennel with no issue. 03/13/25 (PM) Faith is standing in front of her kennel door with a neutral frame. She remains still, as the handler clips her collar, proceeding outside for a walk. The handler will take Faith on a lengthy walk. She displays a neutral, still frame as she trots moderately beside the handler. Faith maintains a relaxed pace as she explores different dirt patches along the walk. She doesn't take treats when administered. She will allow handling as the handler pets her as they come to a stop. She remains soft, leaning in for more petting. Faith is returned to the facility, trotting her way back with a soft frame. She enters the building as well as her kennel with no issue. 03/12/25 (PM) As the handler approaches the kennel, Faith is lying down with a neutral frame. She slowly rises and makes her way to the front of the kennel cautiously. The handler kneels down and coaxes her with a high pitch voice and open palms. Faith will lean in, allowing the handler to pet her head and the handler is able to clip her collar with a drag leash. Faith will exit the kennel, maintaining a moderate pace, trotting her way out of the kennel room. She is taken to the live room. She will enter the kennel room with a loose frame and wagging tail. Faith will explore the room maintaining a soft frame. Faith will approach the handler, collecting pets. The handler will sit on the couch and Faith climbs up after them, the handler makes space allowing Faith to sit with them. Faith is then left to sit there on her own and she remains still. She will hop down and lean in again soliciting pets. She will roll to her back and allow belly rubs remain soft. She is returned to kennel where she will trot back over with no issue. She enters her kennel willingly. 03/12/25: Faith comes to the front of the kennel with a lowered body, lip licks, and a low tail wag. She allows the handler to pet her, but cowers away from the leash. Handler attempts to coax her with treats and contact through the leash, but she is unwilling. The handler attempts to lasso her and Faith bears her teeth, snapping and lunging at the rope. Handler is eventually able to leash her and she walks with a lowered body to the canine training room. Faith leans into contact and allows the handler to place a collar. She allows the handler to clip her leash to her collar and return her to kennel without issue.
Summary (6):: 03/11/25 (PM) Faith is lying down as the handler approaches. The handler will create a trail with spray cheese in order for Faith to engage with. The handler spends most of their time coaxing her, getting her comfortable with the handler. She is visibly soft, but cautious and weary of the handler. She is hyper-vigilant, paying attention to every movement. She does not see the handler's leash, so she willingly is coming forward. When the handler attempts to spray more cheese in kennel she is startled, retreating to the back of kennel. Faith will stand there becoming tense, watching the handler with a hard face. The handler walks away and returns to find that the trails were licked by Faith. As the handler opens the kennel door to leash her, she backs away, standing with a stiff frame and hard face. The handler will have her sniff the leash, but she bares her teeth. The handler will attempt to lassoes her, and she lunges forward biting onto the lead and quickly releasing. As the handler attempts again, this time she yells and does the same exact thing as before. She is now actively ducking and dodging the lead while snapping at the lead. At one point she attempts to dart straight out of kennel but the handler quickly closes the door. The handler will make a few more attempts and to where the loop of the leash will fall upon her, she will thrash, having the lead fly off, making the handler reset. In order to not stress her further, the handler makes sure her kennel is clean before letting her decompress. 03/11/25 The handler will attempt to coax Faith when approaching her kennel. With high-value treats, the handler coaxes her to the front of her kennel and she will take them from the ground and when administered. To where she is soft, taking the treats gently when administered, she is cautious, staying light on her paws and hyper-vigilant to all forms of movement. When attempting to leash as she is taking treats, she will duck and dodge until she is frustrated. Faith is unable to be removed from kennel due to defensive aggression. She will retreat to the back of kennel and snap at the lead, baring teeth with a hard face. The handler allows her to decompress, circling around later in the day. PREVIOUS STAY: 10/21/24 Faith is sitting with a relaxed frame as the handler approaches. The handler leashes her with ease, and they proceed outside for a walk. Faith displays a neutral, still frame as she walks moderately beside the handler. Faith doesn't take any treats administered or tossed. Faith will allow petting as she leans in to be handled. Faith is returned to the facility where she enters the building and her kennel with no issue.
Summary (7):: 10/16/24: Faith was leashed with ease and walked to the BA room for her assessment. Faith moved around slowly and searched the floor for treats. She seemed to have a good appetite. Faith looked tired and often lowered her gaze and slicked back her ears. Faith hesitated to walk through door to exit room but followed when handler crouched down and spoke to her in a soft voice. Faith stopped in front of kennel appearing overwhelmed by the noise of the other dogs so handler crouched down again and encouraged her to climb in. Handler returned to her kennel a short time later and found her sleeping soundly. She did not wake up as handler hung kennel signs on her door. 10/15/24: Faith is lying at the back of kennel with a tense trembling body as handler approaches. Handler cracks open the kennel door and kneels down, talking to Faith with a soft tone. Faith slowly approaches and is avoidant of leashing. Faith is walked to the Canine Behavior Office for assessment (due to her FAS, an assessment is not attempted at this time). Faith will approach handlers with a trembling body and tucked tail. She allows handler to slowly collar her. Handlers offer Faith pieces of chicken which she shows no interest in. Faith climbs up on the couch and lays curled up in the corner. Faith stays on the couch for 5+ minutes. Handler slowly approaches, grabbing the end of the drag lead, and Faith slowly comes down from the couch and eats pieces of chicken off of the floor. She walks back to kennel with a low, slightly tense body and returns without issue.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13)- Due to Pennny's fearful behavior we recommend she is placed in an adult-only home. Place with a New Hope partner: Faith is a fearful and handling-sensitive dog who has shown defensive behavior when leashing. She initially displayed avoidance behaviors, including retreating to the back of her kennel, baring her teeth, lunging, and snapping when handlers attempted to leash her. While she has made progress with a slow, patient approach, she remains cautious and hyper-vigilant, particularly in new situations or around unfamiliar people. In controlled environments, Faith has shown moments of sociability, leaning in for petting, soliciting belly rubs, and willingly approaching familiar handlers. However, she continues to startle easily and may disengage or retreat when overwhelmed. Faith is available for rescue through one of our new hope partners She will need a patient, force-free approach to continue building confidence and comfort with handling in a low-stress environment.
Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,Basic manners/poor impulse control,Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Anxiety
Potential challenges comments:: Resource guarding: She has a tense body and will hover over when her treats are touched.It is essential to work on desensitizing her to having her possessions handled by using techniques like trading up for higher-value items and practicing "drop it" and "leave it". Please see handout on Resource guarding. Basic manners/poor impulse control: Faith jumps up non-stop, indicating a need for training to improve her impulse control and basic manners. Consistent training to teach her to sit or stay when greeting people, using positive reinforcement and redirection, will help manage this behavior. Please see the handout on Basic manners/poor impulse control. Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition: Teaching her to take treats gently by rewarding calm behavior and using a clicker or marker word can help. Please see handout on Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition. Handling/touch sensitivity:She will bark/growl when she is restrained, and is fearful when her feet/paws are touched. She isn't bothered when she is disturbed when sleeping, push/pulled off furniture or when her collar is grabbed/touched. Anxiety/Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: In the care center she has shown fearful behavior displaying high hackles and shaking body, tucked tail. She has also shown to become fearful of loud noises and going through door ways.Faith will bears her teeth, snapping and lunging at the leashed. Provide a safe space where she can retreat when feeling overwhelmed. Consistency and patience are crucial in helping Faith feel more comfortable with handling and reducing her fear responses. If her behavior persists, consider consulting a professional dog trainer or behaviorist for additional support. Please see the handout on generalized anxiety and fearful/potential for defensive aggression.
