Shadow Banks
Hello, my name is Shadow Banks. My animal id is #246621. I am a male black cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 4 years 1 months 1 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 1/31/2026, with the surrender reason stated as person health - medical.
Shadow Banks is on the at-risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. He has slightly warmed up to attention and may tolerate brief petting; however, he has become more confident and curious about escaping the kennel. This becomes a challenge since he has potential to escalate when attempting to reach around or handle him. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

What my friends at ACC say about me: I'm an independent kitty who likes to do my own thing. I am looking for a home with a patient person. I can be slow to adjust to new environments. I prefer to take things at my own pace. I'm sensitive and shy. I'll need extra help from you. Shadow Banks tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter and may be intimidated by small children. He may be a little more independent and may need time to warm up to his new home. Although he has improved and warmed up during his stay, due to the behaviors previously seen in the care center and bite history, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home. A volunteer writes: If your kind of cat is a high-spirited talker who loves being where the action is and greeting guests at the front door, then Shadow Banks just might be your man! This sleek young beauty came to us from a home, and his former person told us that he's friendly, affectionate, vocal, and enjoys being babied. At the Care Center he was remote and fearful at first, then settled in. He now greets team members with slow blinks and leans in for head and cheek pettings. Shadow Banks loves playing, and in his previous home it seems he didn't get enough playtime. So a new pet parent who can engage him in a little interactive play with toys, string, or a laser pointer would make him very happy. Sweet, curious, and with a big personality, Shadow Banks is waiting to meet you at the Manhattan Care Center today!

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: PRIOR ASSESSMENT 2/10/26 Shadow Banks has improved from his initial assessment at the care center. When the assessor approaches, he looks at them with soft eyes, beginning to slow blink. When the kennel door is opened and petting is attempted with the scratcher tool, Shadow Banks leans in, allowing petting on the head and cheeks with the tool and closing his eyes. Petting is attempted directly with the assessor's hands, and he continues to tolerate and lean into petting on the head and cheeks. Shadow Banks is unable to be coaxed down from the den and tenses slightly when pressure is applied to his sides, so pickup is not attempted. He continues to lean into pets on the head and cheeks. PRIOR ASSESSMENT 2/3/26 Shadow Banks is sitting crouched forward in his den, ears back, eyes wide, pupils dilated, body very tense, and low growling intensely as the assessor approaches. When the kennel door is opened and the den cover is lifted, he swats hard at the clear den door and hisses. Petting is attempted with the scratcher tool, and he is unable to be pet, swatting and biting at the tool. The assessor places a squeeze up on a tray and slowly slides it into the front of the den by lifting the den door very slightly up and Shadow Banks hesitates for a moment before getting up, coming forward, and eating the whole thing. Petting is attempted with the scratcher tool while he eats and he immediately tenses and begins to low growl again, resuming eating when the tool is removed. When the assessor slowly places the den cover back, Shadow Banks swats the den door again and continues low growling. Interaction is ended. 2/2/26 FB73 Shadow Banks is growling intensely, poking his head out of the portal exit as the handler approaches and lifts the shoreline cover. When petting is attempted with the scratcher tool, he hisses, immediately swatting at the tool. Interaction ended to reduce FAS. 2/4/26 FB73 Shadow Banks is laying curled up in the back of the kennel, slow blinking when the handler is at a distance. When the kennel is approached, his ears go back and his body tenses. Crunchy treats are offered at the front of the kennel and when the handler walks away, he slowly gets up and comes forward to eat them. The handler returns and he stiffens, head low and ears back. The handler waits for him to walk to the back of the kennel and slides a tray with a squeeze up into his kennel from between the bars. After a few seconds he comes forward and begins to eat it. 2/6/26 Vol. Shadow Banks was crouched on top of his den. His eyes were wide and dilated. He hesitantly leaned forward to accept squeeze up from scratcher tool. After eating, he moved further toward back of kennel, remaining tense and wide-eyed. He leaned forward again to sniff at a feather toy. He sniffed intently for a while but did not play. He did not vocalize or swat during interaction.
ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Moderate
VOCAL:: Quiet
CHARACTER TYPE: : Bold,Shy ,Sweet,Curious
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Rough play,Fearful,Other,New home adjustment period
Potential challenges comments:: Shadow Banks has displayed fearful behavior during his stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide him with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus. Shadow Banks should be given a slow introduction to the home, one room at a time starting in a small room like a bathroom with food, litter and water, either because prior owner notes [needs time to warm up, prefers contact on his own terms] or because behaviors seen at the Care Center [hides, avoids contact, growls, may swat and bite when not comfortable] strongly suggest that he will hide if allowed. Interact with him in this room until he seems sufficiently confident that you feel you can introduce him to the next part of the home without running the risk that he will hide. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to help introduce your cat to the home. Shadow Banks was reported by his previous owner to play roughly. He may put his teeth on skin and/or swipe without retracting claws. He may also be easily overstimulated. We recommend play with fishing pole-type toys and ending play sessions before Shadow Banks becomes overstimulated or if he begins to target human hands or feet. We also recommend using puzzle feeders to keep Shadow Banks engaged and to exercise his brain in addition to his body. Shadow Banks is reported to hiss, swat, growl, and bite strangers. He was also reported to have a bite incident when his favorite blanket was moved in his previous home. Please use caution when introducing him to new people and when handling his things.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 3
RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home
Recommendations comments:: Due to behaviors seen at the care center and behavior reported in the home (previous bite incident, rough play) an adult only home is recommended.
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Shadow Banks is standing at the front of the kennel, meowing softly and gently head bunting the kennel door as the assessor approaches. When the kennel door is opened, he backs away, ears back and tail flicking. The assessor gives him a few moments to settle before attempting interaction again. Shadow Banks is offered a squeeze up and he allows the assessor to slowly place the tray directly in front of him, which he leans forward to sniff before quickly beginning to eat it. When he has finished eating, he is called over and approaches the front of the kennel. Shadow Banks allows some petting on the head and cheeks and leans in for a few seconds before he backs away, tenses, and begins to tail flick again. Interaction is ended to reduce stress.
