Animal Profile

Sandy

Hello, my name is Sandy. My animal id is #222639. I am a female black brown dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 1 months old.

I came into the shelter as a stray on 3/18/2025.

Sandy is at risk due to behavioral reasons. When out with handlers Sandy has been observed to have a soft body and allow petting. Despite our best efforts at making her comfortable Sandy has been observed to be stressed in kennel. She has been observed to whine, pace, and bang on her kennel door. She has also been observed to jump up on the door push off and spin in kennel while barking. Medically Sandy is apparently healthy.

Summary (6):: 4/23/25: Sandy is observed to bark persistently in kennel the floor of her kennel and the walls are painted in feces. Sandy jumps up on the door, pushes off of it and spins in kennel while barking. This behavior occurs consistently while the handler is observing her. 4/20/25: As handler approaches the kennel, Sandy is caught jumping off her kennel door, barking at the handler, and pawing at the door. Handler feeds Sandy a treat before presenting the leash; shortly after, Sandy is leashed with ease. Sandy pulls hard out of the room and towards the street. Once crossing the street, she begins to moderately pull. She would continue to pull towards various spots to sniff and relieve herself, when passing people, she would show no interest and would be rewarded a treat after walking past them. When walking towards a busier street, Sandy would become slightly frantic and begin to jump on the handler. Shortly after, she would begin to pull hard away from the street towards the direction of the shelter. She is then taken back to the shelter, where she becomes soft-bodied and allows handler to clip her, and she is then returned back to her kennel with ease. 04/16/25: Sandy is at the front of her kennel as handler approaches, she barks and paws at the kennel door. She is leashed while distracted with treats and taken to the street for her walk. She pulls moderately outside and when spotting dogs from afar shows minimal interest. When passing people on the street she walks past with no issue and walks well on leash besides occasionally pulling hard toward spots on the street she finds interesting. Sandy is walked for a bit more before being brought back inside. She allows handler to clip her leash and pulls moderately when returning to kennel. Sandy returns and interaction is ended shortly after.

Summary (7):: 4/10/25: As handler approaches the kennel, Sandy is jumping off the walls and spinning around. Handler presents the leash and Sandy begins to jump on the bars briefly and flipping her water bucket by spinning around, all while switching between panting and vocalizing. Sandy is then leashed and taken out of the kennel, on the way out of the room Sandy pulls hard and barks at all the other dogs in the room in passing. She is then taken for a street walk where he would continue to pull hard. Once out on the street he walks in a zig-zag motion in front of the handler, continually panting due to his pulling. She would stop to sniff various spots outside to relieve himself and would look towards the handler. When seeing a dog across the street, Sandy would become tense which was followed by vocalizations and pulling/lunging towards other dogs. Her focus is quickly distracted with a squeaker and/or treat but would quickly re-focus back on the dog. Shortly after, she is then later returned back to the shelter where her pulling has slightly decreased. She is then clipped and muscled towards handlers side avoiding the kennels as he would begin barking and pulling towards the kennels, which was followed by her being returned to her kennel without further issue. When handler begins to walk away Sandy would begin to bounce off the walls again and vocalize. 4/1/25- ACS reported when attempting to leash Sandy she was bouncing all around the kennel. Another handler came and use a treat lure which allowed other handler to easily leash her. 3/31/25: ACS report that Sandy is anxious in kennel, noted to whine, pace, and bang on the door. 3/26/25: Sandy is off leash in the yard with staff members. She is soft bodied and seek attention from handler by nudging them with her nose. She allows petting. 3/23/25: Sandy is at the front of her kennel as handler approaches. She then begins to bark, lung at the door and flip and spin in her kennel as the handler unlocks the door. She continues to lung and flip to the back of her kennel after jumping at the door multiple times before the handler is successful with leashing her. She is then taken for a walk outside. On the way, a dog passed in the driveway and she begins to bark and lunge towards the dog. She is unable to be redirected with toys or treats as the handler walked backwards to get her behind the parked vans. She is the taken to the behavior room for her assessment, where she pulls and pants heavily on the way. Please see behavior assessment notes for more details. When retuned back to kennel, she begins barking, lunging and spinning in the kennel as the handler locks the door and walks away.

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Sandy so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 4

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Single-pet home,Recommend no dog parks

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to on leash reactivity we recommend a home with no children. Single pet Home/ No Dog Parks: Due to on leash reactivity we recommend a single pet home with no trips to the dog park.

Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration

Potential challenges comments:: Basic Manners: Sandy has been observed to jump up on handlers. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Sit" and "Off" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach them to control their impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward-based training only is recommended. Please see handout on Basic Manners. On Leash Reactivity: Sandy has been observed to be highly reactive to dogs. Noted to hard bark and lunge towards dogs while on leash this behavior is not able to be redirected. After reacting to the dog Sandy is observed to mouth handlers sleeves. Sandy will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than other dogs. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration.
