When a handler attempted to remove Brownie from their top kennel, he escalated to growling and snapping at the handler. Medically, Brownie has a facture and is underweight. Brownie Eclair arrived at MACC as a stray with no known history. While in care, Brownie has been observed to be highly fearful. Noted to balk repeatedly while on leash and pancake when certain stimuli occurred. For example, a person stepping out of the elevator. Due to the detailed behavior, we recommend an experienced adult only home.

DVM Intake Exam Estimated age: 1 year based on dentition Microchip noted on Intake? Scanned negative History: Agency Subjective: BAR Observed Behavior - loose wiggly body, allows all petting, sensitive to palpation of hindlegs and shied away from handler, tense in kennel. Is there evidence of suspected cruelty? No Objective: T = P = WNL R = WNL BCS: 3/9 EENT: Eyes clear, ears clean, no nasal or ocular discharge noted Oral Exam: Adult dentition, minimal tartar at gingival line -- limited exam performed PLN: No enlargements noted H/L: NSR, NMA, CRT < 2, Lungs clear, eupneic ABD: Non painful, no masses palpated U/G: Externally WNL, intact male, 2 scrotal testes MSI: Ambulatory x 4, but significant muscle atrophy of RHL when compared to LHL, skin free of parasites, no masses noted, healthy hair coat CNS: Mentation appropriate - no signs of neurologic abnormalities Rectal: Externally WNL Wood's Lamp Exam: not performed Assessment: Muscle atrophy of RHL but no apparent lameness- r/o old fracture vs. nerve damage vs. other Intact male Underweight Prognosis: Good Plan: Sedate for radiographs to assess if prior trauma is leading to muscle atrophy Sedated using 0.3 ml Dexmedetomidine (500mcg/ml) + 0.3 ml Butorphanol (10mg/ml) IM Hindleg + pelvic radiographs: - pelvis appears WNL, femurs appear WNL bilaterally and each femur had has normal acetabular coverage - no appreciable stifle abnormalities noted - RHL tibia has old and healed fracture at mid diaphysis. 7/10/2026

Pre-surgical exam, anesthesia, and surgery performed by offsite vet. Medical record uploaded to Vet Documents. Green linear tattoo placed lateral to incision. Start 1/2 tab of carprofen 100mg sid po x2 days as pain management. Per offsite: Moderate dehydration, fluids given in clinic.

Did not make it to the street, pancakes when stimuli occurs Sociability Loose in room (15-20 seconds): Fearful Call over: Approaches handler with coaxing Sociability comments: Tense body, low tail, wags tail when handler speaks in a high pitch voice Soft handling: Fearful Exuberant handling: Fearful Comments: Tense body, tucked tail Arousal Jog comments: Follows handler initially, then balks and is unable to be coaxed forward Knock Knock comments: No approach Toy Toy comments: No interest, no reaction

Summary (7):: 7/11/26: Brownie approaches the front of his kennel with a wiggly body; he is easily leashed and brought out the room. While walking brought the hallway, Brownie stops walking, but then continues to do so when the handler speaks to him in a soft voice. Brownie walks with little to no leash tension when being walked on the street; he doesn't react to dogs or people. When the handler speak to him, Brownie turns around and looks at them with a soft face; he then leans into them as he receives pets. Upon entry, the handler clips their leash and returns Brownie Eclair to his kennel. 7/9/26: It is reported that Brownie began growling at handlers when they put the leash on him. Brownie then began growling louder when the handlers opened the door wider. The handler offered treats and Brownie snapped at them. When the handler closed the door, Brownie snapped again. The handler then ended the interaction. 7/6/26: Brownie Eclair has been observed to be chewing and pulling on the wire of his airline crate. He is removed and easily lifted and placed into a top kennel. 7/5/26 (Assessment): Brownie Eclair was at back of crate as handler approached. He was easily leashed and pulled from crate for a brief street walk before his assessment (Please see assessment notes for details). Brownie Eclair walked behind handler in the hallway. A staff member exited the elevator and Brownie Eclair got a tense body with ears back, tucked tail and dropped low to ground, took handler a little while to encourage him to keep moving with verbal encouragement and treats. He saw another staff member and did the same thing, handler had to get staff member to turn around before he could continue. Once he got outside to the gate at the end of the driveway he stopped and refused to continue. Handler abandoned walk and took him to the behavior room for his assessment. He was returned to his crate with no issue.

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Brownie Eclair so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in addition to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.

We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.

They has also been observed to growl and snap at handlers when they attempt to pick him up out of kennel. It is important to move slowly with Brownie, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow them to initiate interactions with new people.
