Pre-Screener Form

Oren is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Upon arriving as a stray, Oren was noted to be fearful but did allow handling. During his handling assessment Oren remained tense however approached staff with coaxing, tolerated contact, was treat receptive. Unfortunately, Oren has become increasingly kennel reactive when being taken out for walks. Oren has been observed to pull hard towards kennel and pushing off walls to kennel fight. Medically, Oren is noted to be underweight but is otherwise apparently healthy.

It is unknown if I have ever lived with other animals or children. I would do best in a home with only adult humans. I prefer to call the shots and enjoy coming to you when I'm ready for pets.

Date of intake:: 4/1/2026

Summary:: Nervous but allowed leashing, walked to kennel without issue

Date of initial:: 4/1/2026

Summary:: Nervous, food motivated, doesnt do well for restraint, growling and jumping, able to complete tasks

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Oren so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. However, he will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to Oren's low threshold for arousal and on leash reactivity, we recommend a home with no children. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.

Potential challenges: : Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Low threshold for arousal

Potential challenges comments:: Handling Sensitivity/Fearful/Potential for defensive Aggression: During his assessment it was noted that Oren would display fearful behavior becoming tense and whale eyeing, Oren was also reported to growl during handling with medical. Oren should never be forced to interact, he should always be given the opportunity to walk away from situations or people he finds uncomfortable. We recommend a slow approach and we recommend ONLY force-free, reward-based training methods for Oren. More aversive techniques are likely to increase fear, increase the risk of aggression, and decrease Oren's quality of life. Please see handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression. On Leash Reactivity: It is reported that Oren is highly dog reactive. Pulling hard towards other dogs in the kennel room. Oren will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than other dogs. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration. Arousal: In one instance Oren became over aroused in the yard and began jumping up on the handler, this resulted in a scratch on the handler's right thigh. Positive reinforcement training should be used to teach Oren to remain calm during arousing situations. If they begin to escalate, people should pause the interaction, and create distance from the trigger. Pattern games such as 1-2-3 treat and the cue “mat” can be used to reinforce calm behaviors. Please see handout on Arousal.
