Animal Profile

Puppuccino

Hello, my name is Puppuccino . My animal id is #222181. I am a female brown brindle dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 4 years 1 months 3 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a stray on 3/11/2025.

Puppuccino is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. Puppuccino has been struggling to acclimate to the care center environment despite best efforts to keep her comfortable. Puppuccino has been thrashing on leash, refusing to go back into kennel or walk having to be coaxed by one or more staff members back inside. Puppuccino is social with select staff, but struggling to acclimate. Medically, apparently healthy.

What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I would do best in a home with only adult humans. I'm ready to learn! I need a patient person who has the time to work on training with me. I love to be loved, but on my own terms! Let's brush up on some canine body language together!

Summary:: Due to Puppucino entering the facility as a stray, there is no prior dog-to-dog history recorded. 04/03/25: When off leash at the Care Center Puppucino is introduced to a novel female dog. At the gate Puppucino approaches with a soft frame and wiggly frame. Both dogs scent one another. The novel female will run around the yard displaying the "zoomies" as Puppucino remains present, toe tapping . When the novel female returns to the gate she will scent Puppucino once more this time displaying prey bows and remaining stiff while doing so. Puppucino begins to display hackles and paw raises. When the novel female begins barking at Puppucino, she will turn her head in avoidance before creating distance. Both dogs are separated, this will conclude the interaction. 3/23/25: Puppucino was introduced to a male dog in the care center, initially greeting through a barrier while on leash. She approached with a soft body, circular tail wag, and light foot taps toward the male dog, who responded with play bows. When brought nose to nose, Puppucino exchanged scents with the male before gradually engaging in play, offering play bows that the male mirrored. She initiated chase play, and when the male attempted body contact, she responded with a vocal correction and bared teeth. The male appropriately disengaged, shook off, and was able to reinitiate interaction, leading to continued social engagement. Both dogs were later separated, concluding the interaction. 03/13/25 Puppuccino is introduced at the gate to a novel male dog while off leash at the care center. Puppucino doesn't greet the novel male dog appearing nervous as she displays a tucked tail and whale eyes. She will pancake in front of the gate as a form of self-handicapping. She is moved away from the gate to reduce stress and is returned to kennel, concluding the interaction.

Due to her discomfort, the session will be paused, and she will be calmly escorted back to her kennel to be reassessed on another day.

Date of intake:: 3/11/2025

Summary:: loose, wiggly appeasement behaviour

Date of initial:: 3/11/2025

Summary:: tail tucked, ears back, approached for treats, then retreated and growled.

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Puppuccino so we cannot be certain of her behavior in a home environment. However, she will need daily mental and physical activity to keep her engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 4

Recommendations:: No children (under 13)

Recommendations comments:: No Children under 13: Due to how uncomfortable Puppuccino is currently with touch and novel stimuli, we feel that an adult-only home would be most beneficial at this time.

Potential challenges: : Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration

Potential challenges comments:: Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Puppuccino will need time to decompress when she is in her new home. During her medical exam she took treats, then backed up and growled. During her handling assessment, Puppuccino displayed some avoidant behaviours such as lip licking, pacing and lifting her front paw. A crate or safe space that she can have to herself would be best for this. It is advised to let her come to you for petting when she feels safe. Please see the handout for fearful/potential for defensive aggression. barrier frustration: Puppuccino is reported kennel fight when coming out of the kennel. During her handling assessment, she began to bark during the knock portion but approached the handler with a loose body. Anxiety: Puppuccino displayed anxious behaviors during her handling assessment, including whining and a tucked tail We have no history on her behavior in a home environment, so we do not know if this will occur outside of the care center. If it does appear in a future home, we recommend puzzle toys, long walks, and giving her other things to focus on to alleviate her anxiety. Positive reinforcement, force-free training only should be used. Please see handout for generalized anxiety.
