Animal Profile

King Zeus

Hello, my name is King Zeus. My animal id is #262263. I am a male black brown dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 7 years 2 months 1 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a agency on 8/12/2026.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

King Zeus is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. Prior to arriving at the care center, King Zeus was found tied up with another dog. It was reported of King Zeus becoming fearful and bite an officer during handling, resulting in a small puncture wound. In the care center, he has continued to show fearful behavior, including initially avoiding leashing and interaction with handlers. King Zeus has shown improvement over time when allowed to move at his own pace and throughs, gradually becoming more comfortable with handlers and loves his walks with staff. Medically, King Zeus is apparently healthy.

Let's get to know each other a bit more...

This pet is available only through ACC New Hope partners. To adopt or foster, please complete the pre-screener form below. Inquiries sent directly to ACC will not receive a response. Pre-Screener Form King Zeus was surrendered into care as a stray, so his past behavior in a home environment is unknown. King Zeus was reported to have bitten an officer when they were attempting to untie him and another dog he was tied up with. The officer was bitten on their forearm, and the bite resulted in a small puncture wound. King Zeus has been observed to warm up slowly to handlers, taking some time to acclimate before seeking attention or displaying social behavior. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home. King Zeus is a 7-year-old large mixed breed who came to ACC as a stray with a history that is largely unknown. He is a fearful boy who can be overwhelmed by unfamiliar people and situations, and he has a reported bite history from when officers attempted to untie him prior to intake. Since arriving at ACC, King Zeus has shown that patience makes a difference. He initially avoided interaction and handling, but has slowly begun warming up when allowed to move at his own pace. He will need rescue placement where they can provide a quiet, adult-only environment, plenty of decompression time, and force-free, reward-based support to help him feel safe and build trust. King Zeus needs someone willing to look beyond his fear and give him the time and space to show who he can be.

Summary:: King Zeus arrived as a stray, so her behavior with other dogs is unknown. 9/25/26: King Zeus greets a novel female dog through a barrier. King Zeus stiffens during the greeting before growling and briefly lunging toward the novel female at the gate. He is moved away from the interaction but remains stiff and repeatedly looks back toward the novel female while exiting the yard.

Summary (4):: 10/18/26: King Zeus is sitting at the front of his kennel and will display some avoidance as the handler attempts to leash him. He will then be brought out for an enrichment outing. During the outing, he will pull hard on a loose leash while maintaining a neutral frame. He will explore the neighborhood, sniffing trees and leaves on the ground without visibly reacting to his surroundings. He will continue engaging in scent exploration throughout the walk. Once the outing is complete, King Zeus will be brought back to the care center and returned to his kennel safely without any issues.

Summary (5):: 10/18/2026: King Zeus is at the front of his kennel as the handler approaches. King Zeus is easily leashed with the use of a treat and brought out into the play yard where the handler will perform some exercises. King Zeus understands the marker very well and the handler begins the first exercise, look. King Zeus performs very well and begins looking at the handler making eye contact as the handler marks him in intervals of every 3-5 seconds while King Zeus maintains eye contact while remaining stationary at about two - three feet. Considering King Zeus is performing well the handler decided to increase the difficulty while maintaining the same distance by performing the look while moving side to side to see if King Zeus maintains the same eye contact in which he performs very well. To help keep King Zeus's attention from becoming bored the handler begins another exercise, touch. King Zeus quickly understands the tapping his nose into the handlers hand will dispense him a treat. King Zeus quickly runs to the handler's hand to tap his nose and begins looking for the treat while the handler takes advantage of the time to setup at a new location and continue the touch. King Zeus begins to run back and forth in excitement performing the touch with ease and even begins to follow the handler around the play yard while making eye contact in hopes to continue the exercise. After 30 minutes of exercise King Zeus is leashed and brought back to kennel with no issues. 10/12/26 (BA note): King Zeus is brought to the assessment room by the handler. He will eat treats while the handler places a drag leash and collar on him. During the process, he will avoid contact with the handlers and initially avoid handling but will eventually allow it. He will run without becoming aroused, does not react to knock, and will sniff toy before disengaging and walking away. For more information, see Behavioral Assessment. 10/09/2026: King Zeus is standing at the front of his kennel with a soft body and tail wag as handler approaches. King Zeus is easily leashed and brought out to the play yard. King Zeus is given some time to sniff his surroundings before the handler initiates and que to start showing him a marker. The handler uses a clicker and the word "YES" to begin showing King Zeus what we are using as a marker before engaging any exercise. King Zeus catches on slowly often walking away before re-engaging with the handler. Slowly King Zeus begins to see what the handler is looking for and starts to look towards the handler after each marker showing more attention. The handler begins with some up and down games with King Zeus. After a while, King Zeus gets tired and begins to show disinterest and lays down to sun bathe. King Zeus is leashed and taken back to kennel with no issues.

Summary (6):: 9/25/26: King Zeus is standing at the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He backs away as the handler slowly presents their leash. He is bale to be leashed while being distracted with treats. He is then taken outside to the play yard for play group. In the yard, he greets the other dog at the gate with a tense body and begins to bark and lunge forward at the gate. He would continue fixate on the dog while being taken away. Please see dog to dog notes for more details. He is able to return back to his kennel with no issues. 9/13/26: King Zeus is at the front of his kennel where he is leashed with no issue. He will exit the kennel quickly and jump up at the handler's pouch. They will remove him with the leash but once they get outside, the handler will offer him a treat in a flat hand and he takes it with a soft mouth. He is then brought out on a walk where he will sniff and frequently checks in with the handler for treats. When returning to the Care Center, the check in become more frequent and he will start to nudge the handler's pouch for treats. They keep him on a short leash opposite from their pouch and give him treats ahead of them. He is returned to kennel with no issue and is secured safely. 08/18/26 (Trainer Note): King Zeus is sitting at the front of kennel with a soft body and a relaxed tail wag. He allows leashing and stretches backwards before being removed from kennel. He walks alongside handler with a soft body all the way to the office. He continues taking treats from handler in the room, approaching with a soft body and briefly leaning in for pets. He is returned to his kennel without issue. 8/16/26: King Zeus is standing at the front of his kennel with a tense body as handler approaches. He is able to be leashed while being distracted with treats and is then taken outside for a walk. On the walk, he walks ahead of the handler with a neutral body and would constantly stop to sniff his surroundings while on the way to the yard. In the yard, he would sniff around to explore and has no interest in treats or toys. He is comfortable approaching the handler to sniff them and is able to return back to his kennel with no issues.

Summary (7):: 08/15/26: King Zeus is sitting in the middle of his kennel with a neutral body. He looks at handler on approach and slowly comes to the front of the kennel as handler is unlocking the door. He is leashed with a treat lure and walks with a low tense body to the training room. Once in the room he stays close to the handler and does not take treats. He walks around and sniffs the corner of the couch. He wanders around for a bit before handler opts to take him back to kennel. His kennel return is not noteworthy. 8/14/26: King Zeus is standing at the front of his kennel with a tense body as handler approaches. He is comfortable taking treats that the handler tosses inside and is able to be leashed with ease. He is then taken to the behavior room. In the room, he has a tense body and low tail as he explores around. He is comfortable approaching the handler, and would take treats that the handler would toss on the ground. He engages in a snuffle mat and a puzzle licking mat. He also engages in licking spray cheese off of the couch. He is able to return back to his kennel with no issues. 08/14/2026 (Trainer Note): King Zeus is sitting at the front of kennel with a tense body as handler approaches. He takes treats readily through the kennel bars but retreats once leash is presented. He tolerates being lassoed and is removed from kennel to be taken to canine behavior office. He engages with a snuffle mat and continues to readily take treats from the handler. When handler attempts to pet him under the chin he stiffens and has wide eyes, handler ceases. Handler tosses treats to the ground to clip him. He is returned to kennel without issue. 08/13/26 (Trainer Note): King Zeus is sitting in the back of his kennel while trembling as handler approaches. Handler tosses treats into the kennel and he readily consumes them. King Zeus slowly approaches the front but quickly retreats when the leash is presented. He does not come forward even when high value treats are offered. He dodges the leash a couple times, but handler is able to lasso him. The door is opened wide and he steps out. Handler takes him to canine behavior office where he remains on leash. He has a tense body with a tucked tail and readily eats treats offered to him. When clipped to return he has a low head and head whips. He is returned to his kennel without further escalation.

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on King Zeus so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. However, he will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in addition to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Single-pet home,Recommend no dog parks,Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to King Zeus's fearfulness and potential for defensive behaviors and bite history we recommend an adult only home at this time. Single-pet home/Recommend no dog parks: Due to King Zeus's behavior in playgroup, we recommend he goes to a home as a single pet and does not visit dog parks. Place with a New Hope partner: King Zeus has not acclimated well to the kennel environment and has allowed only minimal handling since intake. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.

Potential challenges: : Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Bite history (human)

Potential challenges comments:: Fearful/potential for defensive aggression | Bite history (human): King Zeus was reported to have been fearful and escalated to biting an officer when they were attempting to untie him before transporting him to the care centers. During his stay in care, King Zeus has been mostly fearful and intially avoidant of lerashing and interaction with handlers. He has slowly warmed up with moving at his own pace and the use of reward based interactions with handlers. The officer was bitten on their forearm resulting in a small puncture. Guidance from a professional trainer/behaviorist is recommended to assess behavior after decompression in a new home environment. Force-free, reward based training is advised when introducing or exposing him to new and unfamiliar situations. Please see handout on Fearful/potential for defensive aggression.
