Runa
Hello, my name is Runa. My animal id is #225223. I am a desexed female tan dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 3 years 2 months 4 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a agency on 4/21/2025.
Runa is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. Runa in the care center has not acclimated well, despite best efforts to keep them comfortable. Runa in the care center rebounds back and forth in her kennel, vocalizing/growing with her kennel, displaying high levels of stress. Runa is social with staff, but struggling to acclimate. Medically, Runa is currently healthy.

I can be slow to adjust to new environments. I prefer to take things at my own pace. I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe.

Summary:: Due to Runa entering the facility as a stray, there is no prior dog-to-dog history recorded. 06/15/25 Runa is used as today's greeter dog for three sessions, where she will greet three novel male dogs at the gate. Upon her first interaction, Runa is soft, approaching the gate with a soft, wiggly body. Runa will grow exuberant, pawing at the novel male dog from under the gate where there's a gap followed by soliciting play by bouncing along the gate line. The novel male dog will mirror her movements, also offering bounces. The novel male however becomes aroused, biting his drag leash and catching the zoomies, unable to focus. Runa seeks attention from one of the handlers at this point, not returning to the gate. On her next two sessions, Runa appears fatigued. Runa is disinterested, appearing aloof as she ignores the novel male dogs in both of their sessions. Runa is returned to kennel due to said lack of focus, appearing to no longer willfully greet another dog. 06/12/25: When off leash at the Care Center Runa is introduced to a novel female dog. At the gate Runa approaches with a loose frame. Both females will scent one another through the gate. The novel female presents with raised hackles, lip licking, and ears held back. In response, Runa offers an appeasing play bow. The novel female turns away from the gate, sits, and practices avoidance by focusing on the handler instead. The dogs are then separated, concluding the interaction. 04/24/25: When off leash at the Care Center Runa is introduced to a novel male dog. At the gate Runa approaches with a tucked tail and ears back. Both dos scent one another through the gate before Runa begins displacement scenting at gate. The novel male, anxious and panting displacement scents, walking away from the gate. Runa will remain present through out. The novel male does not return to gate. This will conclude the interaction.
Summary (2):: 7/21/25: (1) Runa was loose and wiggly in kennel as handler leashed her. She walked to the yard with a bouncy frame. A second handler brought a collar to the yard so she could be clipped to a drag leash. Runa was wiggly and would jump up on handler 2, trying to lick their face as they collared her. Runa was highly social with handlers and solicited frequent contact. She would often help herself to treats by sticking her nose into handler 2's treat pouch. She could be redirected by asking for a sit. Runa engaged in fetch with a squeaker toy and tennis balls. She would sometimes get mouthy when playing. Runa often lay down with her toys and stretched out on the grass. She was returned to kennel using a treat scatter. Handler brought her a soft toy which she immediately engaged with. (2) While cleaning her kennel, a handler finds chew marks around the frame of Runa's transfer door. - 7/16/25: Runa was running back and forth in her kennel, growling. 7/14/25: Runa is at the front of her kennel laying down when the handler approaches, her kennel covered in feces. Runa is loose/wiggly on approached. Runa is easily leashed and walks out of kennel and onto the sidewalk, Runa remains social with the handler, leaning into contact, pulling moderately on leash and panting due to the heat overtime. Runa continues to explore her surroundings and be social with the handler, and placed back into kennel with no issue.
Summary (3):: 07/06/25: Runa is observed running back and forth in kennel with a flushed face and panting heavily. She is hypersalivating and her kennel is coated in feces. 7/5: Runa was seen hard barking at a dog that was exiting the room. Once the other dog is out of sight, she begins screeching while darting left to right in her kennel before finally biting and shaking her bedding while growling. 6/29/25: Runa is observed to be tugging a towel into her kennel that was dangling Infront of her kennel. The towel was retucked into the top kennel and was loose/wiggly when approached. 6/16/25: Runa is standing in her kennel with a loose and wiggy body as handler approaches. She is able to be leashed with ease and she pulls on the way to the play yard for play group. In the yard, she ignores the other dog at the gate and would jump and stare at the handler for treats. Please see dog to dog notes for more details. She pulls on the way back to kennel and enters with no issue. 6/12 (reassessment) Runa was standing at the front of her kennel, panting, when a handler approached. She begins barking, but is easily leashed. Runa zig zags while pulling hard and panting as the handler walks her to the behavior office. She nearly trips the handlers a few times due to her frenetic movements. Once in the office, Runa is placed on a drag leash, and she has the zoomies around the office. She will stop to solicit attention from either of the 2 handlers present before returning to zooming around. She completes her reassessment, but since her kennel is still being cleaned, she remains in the room, following the handler around and seeking attention or treats. Throughout this time, Runa does display a high level of anxiety and isn't able to fully settle - she continues to pant heavily, pace, with a flushed face. Once her kennel is cleaned, she returns without issue. (Playgroup): Runa greeted handler at front of kennel and was leashed with ease. She walked to the yard with a bouncy frame for a gate greet (see dog-dog summary.) Runa was highly social with multiple handlers and solicited frequent contact. Runa rested her front paws on handler's lap and leaned her whole body into pets. Runa was returned to kennel with ease.
Summary (4):: 6/09/25: Runa is observed to be sleeping in her kennel when approached in kennel. Runa wakes up and stretches, becoming very loose and wiggly and is easily removed from kennel. Runa is highly social with the handler, leaning into petting, sitting and leaning her back into the handlers leg for more petting. Runa will jump on the handler in a social manner, and lean into petting each time she is done jumping, pawing at the handler for more. Runa is encouraged to sniff on the walk by playing find it with the handler, and returns to the care center with no issue. Runa enters kennel with no issue and begins to whine when walking away. 06/03/24: Runa is observed standing on the door of her kennel barking. She has dilated pupils and is panting heavily. The glass is smeared in saliva and the kennel is coated in feces. 6/3/25: When handler approaches Runa's kennel, Runa stands up against the kennel door. As handler unlocks the kennel, Runa gets on all fours and is easily leashed. Once outside, Runa jumps up slightly a few times seeking attention from handler. Shortly after, Runa mainly explores and sniffs around with a loose body, occasionally looking back at the handler for attention. When Runa is escorted to her kennel, the handler throws treats into the kennel and Runa walks into the kennel with no issue. 5/30/25: The boards indicate that Runa when returning will pancake, thrash and scream on leash when being returned to kennel. Runa is seen to be jumping off her kennel door when approached. 05/24/25: Runa is siting in her bed as the handler approaches, her kennel floor, walls and bed are covered in feces. Runa jumps at the kennel and then stands to be leashed. Runa pulls mildly outside and immediately relieves herself. Runa will sit and take treats very gently. A member of the public approaches to enquire about surrendering a goose, he then proceeds to get the goose out of the car and place it on the side walk. Runa does not react to the goose and continues to look at the handler and take treats gently. The handler and Runa wait for the man an the goose to leave, and Runa is safely returned to her kennel.
Summary (5):: 5/22/25: Runa is at the front of her kennel with a loose/wiggly body, whining as the handler approaches to leash her. Runa is easily leashed and brought to the behavior office where she allowed to roam the office on a drag leash, approaching staff with a loose/wiggly body, leaning in for petting and engaging in fetch with the handler. Runa is a bit aroused after fetch and begins to mouth the handlers hands mildly during petting, so the handler begins to let her engage with a lick mat and snuffle mat to let her relax a bit before interacting again. Runa is panting after the enrichment items but is able to lay down on the floor and regulate on her own. Runa is soon after brought back to kennel with no issue. 5/13/25: Runa was standing in kennel as handler approached. Handlers remarked that she appeared to have lost weight. She was leashed with ease and walked to the yard. Runa was clipped to a drag leash and seemed curious about other dogs as they passed by the fence, approaching with a loose tail wag. Runa was less energetic than usual but still played with toys. As she was being returned to kennel and third handler remarked about her weight loss. 05/03/25: Runa is brought out by a staff member with a behavior team member in attendance for a walk. The handler offers Runa a treat and slowly places the lead over her head before removing her from the kennel. Runa walks outside with the handlers, displaying a neutral frame throughout. After the session, she is brought back inside, unclipped, and escorted into her kennel with no issues. 05/03/25: Runa greets the handler lying in the center of her kennel. As the handler prepares the leash, Runa, Conflicted, will get up and toggle between approach and retreat. She will walk crouched with a low head. The handler opens the kennel door slowly and when Runa lays still, The handler will slowly lasso her. Once leashed the handler will escort Runa out of the care center for a walk. When on leash Runa will walk ahead of the handler mildly pulling with her tail tucked. Runa is in flight throughout. The handler proceeds to sit on steps of a near by building. Runa will stand at end of the leash with mild tension, ears toggling between front and back. When she checks in with the handler, the handler will proceed to toss her treats, rewarding her. The handler will use this to lure Runa closer and closer until they are able to feed Runa with a open hand. When the handler stands up, they proceed to throw treats on the steps, luring Runa up them. The handler will reward Runa for scenting, and when she will stand on them, eventually luring her to the top. After Runa is escorted back to the care center. She will mildly pull, tail tucked and ears pinned. Runa is brought back to kennel where she is safely secured.
Summary (6):: 4/28/25: Runa is at the back of her kennel, tense and trembling when approached. She takes high-value treats but only eats those within reach. The handler softly encourages her forward, speaking gently, and Runa begins to wag her tail, sitting up in the process. With the help of the leash and treats, the handler slowly guides her to the front, making the leash less novel by gradually raising it as Runa becomes focused on the food. Once leashed, Runa is coaxed out of the crate but is startled when the tray shifts. Runa is brought out a walk outside, where outside, she relaxes during the walk, her tail untucking, and she happily engages in a game of fetch. Back in the behavior office, Runa seeks contact and enjoys petting. Runa uses the bathroom, pulling towards other dogs and is easily clipped and returned to her crate without issue. 04/25/25: Runa is lying at the back of her crate with a tense trembling frame as handler approaches. Handler kneels down and speaks to Runa with a soft tone through the cracked door. Runa will lightly tap her tail but maintains a trembling frame. Handler tosses Runa pieces of cheese but she shows no interest. When a drag lead is presented, Runa sniffs it lightly before curling back into the corner of her crate. Handler pats at the front of crate and attempts to coax her forward for leashing but she remains planted. Handler presents their slip lead and allows Runa to sniff and familiarize herself with it before slowly placing it over her head. Handler moves away from the crate door and Runa slowly exits. She walks with a low, tense frame to the Live Room. Once in the room, Runa will sit next to handler and allow light petting along the side of her neck. When handler stops contact, Runa will inch closer and lean her head on their leg to solicit contact again. Runa's body loosens throughout her time in the room and becomes social with handler, continuously soliciting attention. After her session, Runa is returned to crate safely.
Summary (7):: 04/24/25 (PM): Runa was sitting in back of kennel when handler approached. She crept forward when lured with high value treats, but would retreat when leash clip came towards her. After some time, handler leaned into crate and slowly placed leash loop over head. Runa stopped taking treats. Due to heavily soiling of kennel, handler used directional leash pressure to guide her out. Once out of kennel she walked to the yard without issue. Handler crouched beside her and clipped drag leash to collar. Runa displayed FAS at times with a tense frame, tucked tail, slicked back ears, and furrowed brow. Handler sat on the bench and allowed Runa to approach on her own terms. Handler spoke to Runa in a soft voice but did not attempt to pet her. Runa found a tennis ball and broke into brief zoomies. Handler engaged her in play and she loosened up significantly. Runa was loose and bouncy as she hopped across the pen, swatting the ball around with her paws. She was returned to her crate on the drag leash and unclipped as she stepped inside. Handler left a few pieces of cheese before covering crate. 4/24/25: Runa is at the back of her kennel with a tense body, laying down and visibly trembling when approached. Runa is offered high value treats, which she will begin to eat, but eat the ones that are closest to her. Runa will not get up to eat the high values that are a bit farther away from her, so the handler begins to baby talk and coax her to the front, where she begins to tail wag slowly and get up from a laying position to sitting up in the crate. The handlers leash is put into the ring of food that is farthest from her, and begins to feed her slowly around the leash to make it less novel and crate a trail leading to the leash. Runa will begin to eat the treats inside the loop, and the handler is slowly able to lift the loop higher and higher as she is distracted by the treats. Runa is leashed slowly where she backs out a bit, but the leash stays on her. Runa is coaxed out of the crate, and the handler uses a bit of leash pressure where the tray that was not secured in the crate begins to slide out, spooking Runa out of the kennel. Runa army crawls to the behavior office and is walked to the couch, where the handler sits next to her and she backs up into the handler sitting, soliciting contact and reengaging after consent checking. Runa is collared with no issue, and stays near the handler asking for petting. Runa is taken back to her crate with no issue, and approaches the handler enough so the drag leash can be removed. 04/24/25: Runa is in the back of her kennel—fearful. Once leashed, she takes a few minutes to walk out, slowly looking around and being hyper-vigilant. Runa walks with handlers outside with a low-body posture and a tucked tail. Upon meeting her playmate, she offers a brief nose-to-nose sniff before walking away and displacement-sniffing. Runa is brought back to her kennel safely with no issues.

Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Fearful,Anxiety
Potential challenges comments:: Basic manners/poor impulse control: Runa jumps up non-stop, indicating a need for training to improve his impulse control and basic manners. Consistent training to teach her to sit or stay when greeting people, using positive reinforcement and redirection, will help manage this behavior. Please see the handout on Basic manners/poor impulse control. On intake, Runa began to growl in her crate, and in care, she has shown fearful behavior when taken out of her pop-up crate. With a slow approach, she has shown to interact with selective handlers. To help Runa with her fear and anxiety, especially regarding being held or restrained, use gradual desensitization and positive reinforcement. Start with brief, gentle handling sessions, rewarding her with treats and praise for calm behavior. Avoid restraining her initially and instead focus on building trust through positive interactions. Gradually increase the duration and intensity of handling as she becomes more comfortable. Provide a safe and quiet space in the care center to help her relax and reduce anxiety. Please see the handout on the decompression period and generalized anxiety.
