In separate incidents, while he was being returned to kennel, he bit and released staff members hands and shoes. Medically, he is apparently healthy.

He was described as a playful, friendly, and going dog by his previous owner. However, he has not acclimated well in the care centers. He has displayed handling sensitivities and has escalated to growling, snapping, muzzle punching, and biting. In separate incidents, while he was being returned to kennel, he bit and released staff members hands and shoes. Medically, he is apparently healthy. Cobra Kai was surrendered by his previous owner due to moving to a new home that does not allow pets. Cobra was described as a very active, playful, and independent dog who enjoys spending his time where people are, in the basement or in his wire crate. During his stay in care, Cobra Kai has not acclimated well to the kennel environment and has allowed only minimal handling since intake. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.

Upon intake, he approached staff with a loose and wiggly body. He sniffed at staff legs before approaching for pets. He accepted treats gently and was easily leashed. Staff were able to scan for M/C, place ACC collar, and place into kennel without issue.

Other Notes:: He is reported to become more alert when strangers approach family members. He isn't bothered when held, restrained, disturbed while sleeping, pushed pulled off furniture, and when his paws/collar are touched.

Has this dog ever had any medical issues?: No

For a New Family to Know: Cobra is a very active, playful, and independent dog. He enjoys spending his time being where people are, basement or in his wire crate for up to 12 hours. He does not allow nail timing out of fear but allows family to bathe and brush him. While on walks he is known to pull moderately or hard. He knows cues like " sit" "stay" and lay down". Previous owner's favorite thing about him is how he does not bark and is very playful. Cobra is reported to eat anything and enjoys having a comfort blanket to sleep or hide under.

Summary:: According to Cobra Kai's previous owner(s), he is reported to be playful, friendly, and outgoing with familiar and unfamiliar dogs both on and off leash. 08/19/23 Cobra Kai is introduced to a novel female while off leash. He approaches the gate with a forward frame and will sniff briefly before walking away. He will reapproach but does not loosen fully.

Summary (7):: 08/25/26 (late entry): Cobra Kai bit staff members shoe twice when returning to kennel. 8/20/26: Cobra Kai is sitting in his crate as handler approaches. He is able to be leashed with ease and is then taken outside for a walk. On the walk, he has a neutral body frame as he explores around. He is comfortable approaching the handler and would eat treats they would toss on the ground. He would flinch and baulk to the ground when pigeons would fly above him. He would stare at dogs and people that were nearby and is able to be redirected with treats. When returning back to his crate, he instantly pulls inside and turns around and becomes tense while hard staring at the handler’s foot. He then begins to growl and snap at the handler's foot as they begin to toss treats inside. As the handler continues to keep their foot at the door to close the crate door, he would growl with a tense body as he quickly ate the treats. He then muzzle punches the door towards handler's hand as they quickly lock the door. The handler tosses more treats inside before walking away and ending the interaction. 8/19/26 (playgroup): Cobra Kai is at the front of the crate as the handler approaches. He will whale eye stare at the handler with a tense frame as they open the door and go to leash him. Out of precaution, they will keep their hand outside of kennel while leashing him. He is then brought out to the play yard where he is kept on leash for the greet. (see dog-dog for more information) He is then returned to kennel where he will grab the leash only letting go when the handler throws treats directly in his mouth. He is then secured safely. 8/18: An ACS reported being bitten twice by Cobra Kai when they returned him to his crate. He walked into the crate and the ACS began loosening their lead to remove it when he spun around and bit them twice on the hand. The bite did not break skin due to their thick work gloves, but they did feel the impact/pain. 8/17/26 (BA): Cobra Kai is at the front of his kennel and is leashed with ease as he attempts to push out of the door. He is then brought to the behavior office where a collar is placed on him with no issue, he will then lean into contact when the handler that placed the collar on him coaxes him to them. When the handler that is handling him attempts to put a drag leash on him, he will head whip and make contact with just his closed mouth on the handler's hand. He is then distracted with spray cheese and the assessor will clip his collar with the drag leash. (see Behavior Assessment for more information) He is then returned to kennel with no issue.

Potential challenges comments:: Handling/touch sensitivity: Cobra Kai flinched with his mouth open when a handler attempted to clip his collar. His previous owner noted that he was fearful during nail trims. Please see Hannah on handling /touch sensitivity. Fearful/potential for defensive aggression | Bite history (human): during his medical exam, Cobra Kai was noted to have escalated to growling when approached, snapping at Medical tools and needed to be muzzled. He has escalated to biting a staff member twice when they had returned into his crate and was in the process of moving their swiftly. He bit the staff member on their hand and where the hand meets the wrist. The bite did not break skin but the handler was able to feel it through their work gloves.
