Solo
Hello, my name is Solo. My animal id is #265284. I am a desexed female black dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 5 years 1 months 2 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 9/14/2026, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance - unhoused.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.
Pre-Screener FormSolo is at risk due to behavior concerns. Solo has not acclimated well to the shelter environment, and has shown increasingly defensive behavior escalating from growling and baring teeth at staff when passing by her kennel, or while passing them on leash, to attempting to bite the hand of a staff member when being removed from her kennel. Solo has shown some social behavior with staff outside of these incidents, accepting petting and responding to simple cues. Medically, Solo is apparently healthy.

Summary:: Solo arrived as an owner surrender and is noted to be tolerant on leash, no experience with unfamiliar dogs off-leash 10/13/26: Solo greets a novel male dog through a barrier but shows limited social interest. He briefly glances toward the novel male before continuing to sniff and explore the yard. Solo remains largely aloof toward both the dog and staff and does not choose to reapproach for further interaction. Due to his limited engagement, Solo is returned from the yard. 10/6/26: Solo greets a novel female dog who initially displays loose body language. Solo approaches and sniffs the novel female, who suddenly stiffens before turning, snarling, and mouthing toward his neck. No clear escalation or intrusive behavior from Solo is observed immediately preceding the response. Due to the intensity of the novel female's correction relative to the observed interaction, the dogs are separated. September 2026: Solo was attempted in playgroup to do a greet, but her ear condition was preventing her to greet the dog as she was scratching her ears persistently. A greet will be done more accurately as her condition begins to hopefully improve.
Summary (7):: 10.28: Solo presents with a neutral body as handler (unfamiliar) approaches her kennel. She is very receptive to treats and looks at the handler softly for more, no jumping noted as she patiently waited for each treat. She is easily leashed and walks out, briefly shaking off at the door. She is escorted to the backyard and joined by a 2nd handler (unfamiliar) who wanted to meet. No reaction when walking past other dogs or people. She is kept on leash as instructed by her tag and loosely explores the play pen with the handlers. She appears less interested in the treats but engages with handlers for gentle pets. A dog walks past and Solo briefly looks at the over while maintaining a sit before refocusing on handler for a different treat. After a while she is escorted back to shelter and easily return to her kennel. 11/4: Solo is at the front of the kennel when the handler approaches. She has an initially tense frame but loosens up as the handler feeds treats under the door. She is leashed with ease and taken outside, where she pulls mildly and pants hard throughout her walk, though does stop to sniff more calmly and methodically a few times along the way. She is returned to her kennel with no issue 11/2: ACS staff report that Solo has been bearing teeth when people pass her kennel on several occasions. The ACS is able to leash her, but as they move forward to open the door further to let her walk out, Solo attempted to bite their hand. As a result, the ACS placed the kennel door between themself and Solo as they swung her back into her kennel. 10/18/26: Solo has been reported by staff to be guarding her crate area by growling and is observed to be growling whilst pulling in the direction of other staff and volunteers.
Date of intake:: 9/14/2026
Summary:: Loose body for handling, fearful when scanning for microchip
Date of initial:: 9/17/2026
Summary:: Inquisitive but growled, showed teeth when ears touched
ENERGY LEVEL:: Solo's previous owners describe her as a medium energy dog. She will need daily mental and physical activity to keep her engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in addition to physical exercise, to positively direct her energy.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Recommend no dog parks,Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to the defensive behavior that Solo has shown at the care center, we recommend an adult only home at this time. Recommend no dog parks: Due to Solo's behavior in playgroup, we recommend he does not visit dog parks. Place with a New Hope partner: Solo has shown potential for defensive aggression during her time at the care center, escalating to attempting to bite a handler's hand when being removed from her kennel. Due to these concerns, we recommend Solo be placed with a New Hope placement partner who is able to provide an experienced adult-only foster home. A period of decompression is recommended to allow Solo to acclimate comfortably to her new environment; force-free, reward based training only is advised when introducing her to new and unfamiliar situations. Consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended for guidance to safely manage/modify any behavior Solo presents with outside of the care centers.
Potential challenges: : Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Separation anxiety
Potential challenges comments:: Handling/touch sensitivity: During her medical exam, Solo growled and bared her teeth when her ears were examined, showing discomfort with touch in a sensitive/potentially painful area. It is important to avoid touching these areas at this time, and to pair touch with good things such as food rewards in order to build positive associations. Please see handout on Handling/touch sensitivity. Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Solo has shown potential for defensive aggression during her time at the care center, including growling and baring teeth at staff and volunteers passing her in her kennel, and attempting to bite the hand of a handler when removed from her kennel for a walk. Prior to these incidents, during an initial attempt at a handling assessment, Solo had recently undergone medical treatment and showed fearful behavior, with a tucked tail, tense body, and avoiding handlers. She also showed mild stress such as lip licking during handling in her follow-up assessment. During her medical exam, she escalated to growling and baring her teeth when a sensitive area was touched. Her signs of discomfort must be respected; Solo should never be forced to interact, she should always be given the opportunity to walk away from situations or people she finds uncomfortable. We recommend a slow approach and we recommend ONLY force-free, reward-based training methods for Solo. More aversive techniques are likely to increase fear, increase the risk of aggression, and decrease her quality of life. Please see handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression. Separation anxiety: Solo's previous owner reported that Solo gets anxious while left alone. While we do not know the nature or intensity of this behavior, we recommend that potential adopters feel comfortable with managing and positively modifying separation-related behaviors should they appear in a home environment.
