He isn't bothered when he is held/restrained, disturbed when sleeping, push/pulled off furniture, feet/paws touched or when his collar is grabbed. He is fearful when startled

Summary:: 03/20/25: A behavior assessment was not carried out today as Ulises could not be removed from his kennel due to lunging and hard barking at the handler. *Previous behavior assessment from 2024 is available upon request.*

Summary:: QACC 25' According to Ulises previous owner(s), Ulises is friendly and outgoing with other dogs while on leash. Behavior off leash to both familiar and unfamiliar dogs are unknown. 03/19/25 Ulises is introduced at the gate to a female greeter dog while off leash at the care center. Ulises doesn't greet the greeter dog, maintaining his distance from the gate. Ulises practices avoidance, seeking attention from one of the handlers present. BACC 24' Due to Ulises entering the facility as a stray, there is no prior dog-to-dog history recorded. 05/01/24 Ulises is introduced to a novel female dog while off leash at the care center. Ulises greets the novel female with a neutral body, making little to no reactivity. Ulises remains self-present, remaining neutral.

Summary (5):: 03/27/25: Ulises was barking at the back of his kennel as the new handler approached. A leash was easily clipped to his collar using cheese as a lure (he was not interested in the other handlers' treats). Ulises was walked outside and Ulises was very bouncy and playful. He jumped at the handler several times in search of cheese, but was rewarded for all four paws on the floor. Ulises took some time to sniff the environment and as his kennel was not yet ready, they went out to the yard. Ulises took time to sniff around the yard, and was very interested in the edges of the gate. The handler asked Ulises to sit, gave him some more cheese and Ulises immediately got the zoomies and ran around the pen multiple times. Ulises then pulled mildly back to his kennel and was retuedn without issue. 3/26: Ulises greets a familiar handler at the front of his kennel with a neutral body. He readily accepts treats with a soft mouth. However, when he sees an unfamiliar staff member enter the room, he scurries to the back of his kennel, standing on his kuranda bed body tense, hackle raised, and with a short lip and whale eyes, and begins hard barking and growling. The staff member attempts to coax him with a soft voice and treats but he does not take them and continues to hard bark and growl. The staff member walks away to avoid further stress.

Summary (6):: 03/25/25 Ulises is at the front of his kennel standing neutrally as the handler approaches. Ulises remains neutral as the handler unlocks the kennel door and slowly extends their hand full of treats inside for Ulises. He takes them gently when administered. Ulises will back into kennel when seeing the handler's lead, vocalizing at the handler. Ulises will no longer come forward, so the handler attempts to lassoes him. Ulises is gentle, yet nervous, ducking and dodging the lead. Ulises will do this a few times before the lead wraps around his body and the handler uses this as an opportunity to clip his collar to the lead. As the handler is successful, Ulises shakes-off and they both proceed outside for a walk. Ulises will display a neutral, still frame as he trots alongside the handler. Ulises will explore outside such as dirt patches and different areas along the sidewalk. Ulises will sit willingly when soliciting treats, being rewarded. He will take treats gently when administered. Ulises is returned to the facility. Before entering the facility, Ulises will hard bark at a staff member standing by the entrance. The handler will call Ulises name, have them sit before proceeding. At this point, Ulises ignores the staff member and enters the facility. Ulises is taken to his kennel room where he enters his kennel with no issue. 3/23/25 (PM): Ulises greeted handler at front of kennel and was leashed with ease. Ulises did not display any FAS or avoidant behavior while being leashed, which was a marked improvement from the morning. Ulises walked with a loose frame to the yard. He was clipped to a drag leash and relieved himself outside. Ulises enthusiastically engaged in fetch with handler. He would drop one rope toy on cue before fetching the other. If handler reached towards a toy that he'd dropped at his feet, Ulises would quickly pick it up. Ulises and handler traded toys back and fourth for quite some time. Ulises bounded across the yard with a loose frame. Ulises was returned to kennel with ease. (AM):Ulises behavior in care remains the same as previously noted. While handler 1 was cleaning kennel, handler 2 reported Ulises would hard bark at staff as they entered the room but did warm up to taking taking treats from them

Summary (7):: 3/22/25: Ulises is sitting at the back of kennel with neutral frame as handler approaches. He becomes slightly tense, and handler unlocks the kennel door but will come forward for tossed treats. Ulises eats the treats but will back away as handler attempts to drop the lead over his head. As handler closes the door to reset their lead, he will jump up onto the kennel door to exit. On handler's third attempt, Ulises is leashed and readily exits kennel. He walks with a slightly tense frame to the Canine Behavior Office where he scents and relieves himself. Ulises loosens and begins to eat tossed treats. Handler sits on the couch and will lightly pet Ulises back end as he walks by. He becomes loose and will reapproach handler, leaning into their leg and allows brief petting with a light frame. Handler offers him a cheese licky mat which he readily engages with. He becomes slightly tense when hearing loud noises in the room or when another handler enters but recovers relatively quickly and will return to his licky mat. After his session, Ulises is returned to kennel safely. 03/21/25:(AM) Ulises is standing in the back of his kennel, low growling and hard barking with a stiff frame. The handler will toss treats to gauge his response, but he will show no interest. The handler will then attempt to lasso him, missing on the first try but succeeding on the second. However, once lassoed, Ulises will manage to slip his body through the loop. The handler will remove him from the kennel and place another leash on him to safely remove the first leash from his body. (PM) Ulises is in the front of his kennel panting when the handler approaches him he is easily leashed and taken to the behavior office. A drag leash is attached to his collar when he begins to explore the room. Ulises begins to seek attention from the handler leaning to touch and allowing petting all over. Ulises begins to engage in a game of fetch with the handler. After a while, he is taken back to his kennel where he backs away and is coaxed inside. 3/20: Ulises is reported by ACS to snap,lunge and growl in kennel not wanting to come out and be leashed. From previous stay at ACC: 5/5/24- Ulises started to growl while a handler stood in front of their crate.

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to Ulises's potential challenges we recommend he is placed in an adult only home at this time. Place with a New Hope partner: Ulises's was surrendered to the care center due to the owners moving and having a no pet policy in the home. In the prior home, Ulises was playful, friendly and outgoing. Ulises can be shy, and needs contact on his own terms, and has been known to alert bark when a stranger approaches. Ulises has displayed a mix of behaviors in the care center. He has been seen lunging and growling when handlers try to take him out. He has remined avoidant of handlers, allowing minimal contact. Due to this, Ulises is available for rescue with a New Hope Partner.

Potential challenges comments:: Basic manners/poor impulse control: In the prior home it is noted that he will jump up nonstop. Consistent training to teach him to sit or stay when greeting people, using positive reinforcement and redirection, will help manage this behavior. Please see the handout on Basic manners/poor impulse control. Fearful/Potential for Defensive Aggression : Ulises has escalated to growling and lunging during his time in the care center. He is noted by his previous owner to fearful of loud noises, and will alert bark when a stranger approaches a family member too fast. His signs of discomfort must be respected; Ulises should never be forced to interact, he should always be given the opportunity to walk away from situations or people he finds uncomfortable. We recommend a slow approach and we recommend ONLY force-free, reward-based training methods for Ulises. More aversive techniques are likely to increase fear, increase the risk of aggression, and decrease Ulises's quality of life. Barrier frustration: The owner states he is shy/contact on his terms and will alert bark when a stranger approaches the gate/door. This indicates a need for desensitization and counter-conditioning techniques to help him remain calm and composed in situations where he is separated by barriers. Please see the handout on On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration. Kennel presence: Handler has reported in kennel that Ulises lunges and hard barks as they approach.
