Other Notes:: On June 21, 2026, around 9:30am Blanko's owner returned from a walk. The resident 6 year old was playing with blocks. Blanko walked over to the child and jumped up on them, scratching their chest and stomach. The scratches were not deep but did draw blood. Blanko also put his mouth on the child's arm but did not bite down. The child was taken to the hospital for treatment. Familiar dogs: Playful, Tolerant Unfamiliar dogs - on leash: Playful, Tolerant, Alert barks, Hard barks and/or growls Unfamiliar dogs - off leash: Tolerant, Alert barks, Playful Has had an accident a couple times. Behavior concerns: Jumps up often or non-stop, General anxiety (paces, whines, unable to settle), Pulls hard on leash, Fearful of loud noises (storms/thunder, fireworks, arguments, etc.), Anxious when left alone, Destructive tendencies (furniture, walls, shoes, household items, etc.) On walks will jump or bark in a playful manner at people and animals passing by. Blanko is generally friendly and social. He tends to play rough as he does not understand his size. Can be territorial. Summary (4):: 8/24/26: Blanko is at front of kennel jumping and putting his front paws on the kennel door. He is leashed and pulled from kennel. Coming out of kennel he pulls hard to the other kennels on the way out, while handler has them on a short leash. Blanko head whips toward the handler and his teeth come in contact with handler's thigh but no broken skin and no blood. Then while coming out of room Blanko lunges at a staff member in the hallway standing against the wall and tries to bite them on the arm. Staff member moved their arm and handler pulled back on Blanko keeping him from actually getting to staff member. After his walk he was returned to his kennel with no further incident. 8/23/26: Blanko is at front of kennel with a neutral body where he is easily leashed and taken for a street walk. While walking he maintained a neutral body and pulled lightly. While walking he saw a dog and jumped towards the dog, handler had him on a short leash so he didn't get far but did jump with enough force to cause handler's arm to move slightly. He accepted treats with a soft mouth and also accepted pets on his head, back and sides. He was returned to kennel with no issue. 8/20/26: Blanko is standing in the front of his kennel with neutral body when handler approaches. He is easily leashed with treats; right after he exits the kennel, handler tosses a toy and, Blanko willingly grabs it, and passes the neighboring dogs without showing reactivity. Once in the hallways, Blanko moves forward with strong leash tension. He shows no interest in staff members or dogs in pop-up crates and his attention directed toward the exit. He is panting due to pulling and his body tense. Once in the driveway, Blanko slows down and starts sniffing around; when he gets to the gates he eventually relieves himself. Blanco continues walking slightly ahead of the handler with moderate leash tension. He allows to put the leash harness on and his leash tension visibly decreases; his body becomes looser, and his breathing settles. Blanco has no interest in people passerby. He will hard stare at other dogs and will attempt to pull toward their direction but disengages after verbal recall. Handler is able to cue him to sit and reward him with treats. Blanko remains engaged with the handler throughout the walk. He frequently looks back for check-ins and gently takes treats. He allows petting and often gets down to the ground showing his belly for more pets. During return handler is able to pre-clip the leash and Blanco readily goes back into his kennel by his own.

Summary (5):: 8/19/26: Blanko is at the front of his kennel when handler approaches. His body is relaxed, and he is responsive to the handler. He is easily leashed with a treat lure and willingly exits the kennel. As he leaves the room, handler uses a treat trail to keep his attention away from the neighboring dogs and Blanko follows the treats and does not display reactivity toward the other dogs. Blanko pulls hard forward; he is panting and has wide eyes. Blanko picks up a toy from the floor and continues walking slightly ahead of the handler with mild leash tension. He remains focused on moving forward and does not show interest in pop-up crates or staff members. Once in the driveway, Blanko immediately relieves himself. After, his pace slows down and his body becomes more relaxed. He walks closer to the handler with moderate leash tension, and his panting decreases as he settles. When he notices another dog, Blanko immediately becomes visually focused, with a more alert body toward the dog. He is redirected with treats and a verbal recall, disengaging from the dog and returning his attention to the handler. He does not react toward passing people. Blanko is social and engaged with the handler. When asked to “sit,” he drops the toy and follows the cue. He also responds to “paw" and "wait". He allows petting, and gets all the way to the ground and rolls onto his back, exposing his belly and remaining engaged with the handler. His body stays loose, and his face remains soft and relaxed. During returning, handler is able to pre-clip the leash and bring Blanko back into his kennel with no issues. 8/18/26: Blanko is reported to chew out the plastic lining around his water bowl. 8/17/26: Blanko was at front of kennel with a neutral body where he was easily leashed and taken for a street walk. Coming out of kennel Blanko pulled towards the neighboring kennels in an effort to kennel fight. Handler kept him on a very short leash and kept him moving out of the room. In the hallway he also pulled toward the cages with dogs. When he saw a dog on his walk he would stare until handler got him moving again. He was returned to kennel with no issue.

Summary (6):: 8/13/26: On the whiteboard, Blanko is noted to react to the other dog (Mango Popsicle) through the shared kennel bars. 8/09/26: Blanko is at the front of his kennel with a neutral body as the handler approaches. He is leashed using a treat lure and exits the kennel. As he exits the room, Blanko immediately attempts to pull toward dogs in the neighboring kennels with tense body; he gets more fixated on the dog in the front kennel, jumping on the kennel bars and hard barking at the dog. Handler is able to pull him away and muscle out of the room. Once in the hallway, Blanko pulls ahead of the handler all the way outside; his eyes are wide, and he is actively panting. When he gets to the street, his pace decreases, and he continues walking slightly ahead of the handler with moderate leash tension. During the walk Blanko stops several times to relieve himself. When he notices another dog, he immediately focuses his attention on them but is redirected with high-value treats, which he takes gently from the handler. Blanko follows the verbal cues “sit” and “paw” and allows petting. He does not display reactivity toward passing people. During returning to the shelter, handler is able to pre-clip the leash and bring Blanko back into his kennel with no further issues. 8/5/26: Blanko is reported to be kennel reactive; he slightly pushes off the wall while exiting the room. 07/28/26: Blanko is at the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He is leashed easily and exits kennel pulling moderately, he is walked outside and taken to the street for his walk. Blanko begins pulling forward hard but he settles throughout the walk and begins walking alongside handler. He accepts treats when called and passes people on the street without issue. Blanko is walked for a while and stops to relieve himself throughout the walk. He is eventually brought back inside and returns to kennel following tossed treats. 7/22/26: Blanko is observed to lick his kennel bars while the room is active. 7/18/26: Blanko is sitting at the front of the kennel with soft body. He is easily leashed and pulls hard out of the room. Blanko attempts to turn towards handler with an open mouth, he appears to be mouthing lightly towards the leash. Upon exiting the room, Blanko tries to bite the leash. He then stops and is brought towards the elevator. As he is waiting for the elevator with the handler, he begins to pull towards the pop up crates. Blanko is redirected with treats. He was brought downstairs and pulls hard out towards the street. He is running forward and pulling hard. Blanko is put in a leash harness. He walks with a loose body besides handler on the leash harness and relieves himself a few times. He is then brought back inside the shelter and taken back upstairs. He pulls back into kennel without issue.

Summary (7):: 7/14/26: Blanko is observed to be playing in his kennel, tossing toys around and banging into the walls and the transfer door as a result. 7/11/26: Blanko is at the front of his kennel with neutral body when handler approaches. He is leashed with a treat lure and taken out of the kennel. He pulls hard while exiting the room and towards dogs in pop-up crates but handler is able to pull him away. Once in elevator, Blanko starts pacing back and forth; his eyes are wide and he is actively panting. He pulls harder in the hallway downstairs and all the way to the driveway. After crossing the street he slows down and continues walking slightly ahead of the handler with moderate leash tension. While he walks alongside with the handler he will stop few times to relieve himself. When he sees another dog Blanko will stare at them but easy distracted with high value treats (takes gently from handler). Blanko follows command "sit" and "paw" and allows petting. He doesn't react towards other people passerby. His body is neutral most of the time. During returning handler is able to pre-clip the leash and bring Blanko back into his kennel with ease. 7/3/26: Blanko was at front of kennel with a neutral body. He was easily leashed and pulled from kennel. Blank was taken for a brief street walk. Handler worked on Engage/Disengage while walking when he saw other dogs. The farther the dog the easier it was for Blanko to disengage. He was returned to kennel with no issue. 6/28/26 (Assessment): Blanko greeted handler with a wiggly and loose body. He was easily leashed and pulled from kennel. Blanko was taken to the driveway before his assessment (Please see assessment notes for details). Blanko pulled moderately and walked slightly ahead of handler. When he saw another dog his body tensed and his tail was high. Handler was able to apply little leash pressure to get Blanko moving again. During his assessment Blanko was social with handlers. He was returned to kennel with no issue. 6/22/26: Blanko was at front of kennel with a neutral body where he was easily leashed and taken for a street walk. He mostly walked next to handler with very little leash pressure. On occasion he would find a spot that he would want to sniff and investigate and pull hard to that location. Blanko saw two dogs on the street and each one he barked at and lunged. But handler was able to keep him moving and refocus on his walk instead of the dogs just by continue to walk and using slight leash pressure. He was returned to kennel with no issue.

ENERGY LEVEL:: Blanko is described as active and enthusiastic. They will need daily mental and physical activity to keep them engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in addition to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm. We recommend feeding with puzzle feeders and food-dispensing toys. And we recommend using force-free, reward-based training techniques for Blanko.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to poor impulse control we recommend an adult only home. Singe pet home/ No Dog Parks: Due to his previous owner reporting that Blanko has gotten into fights with other dogs and stating that he hard barks and growls at unfamiliar dogs we recommend a single pet home with no trips to the dog park. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.

Potential challenges comments:: Resource Guarding: Blanko's previous owner states that he jumps up often or non stop. Blanko has been observed to become tense when in the possession of a toy. Nothing should ever be taken directly out of Blanko's mouth, and any time something is removed they should be rewarded with a high value treat or toy. Please see handout on Resource Guarding. Basic Manners: Blanko has been observed to jump up on handler often. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Sit" and "Off" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach them to control their impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Please see handout on Basic Manners. Fearful: Blanko's previous owner states that he is fearful of loud noises. It is also reported that he is fearful when held/restrianed, when startled, and when pushed off furniture. They should never be forced to approach anything that they are uncomfortable with or submit to petting or handling. It should always be their choice to approach a new person or thing. Blanko would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to their new surroundings. Please see handout on Decompression Period. Anxiety: Blanko's previous owner states that he has general anxiety and will pace, whine, and be unable to settle. If Blanko displays anxious behavior in their future home, we recommend puzzle toys, long walks, and giving them other things to focus on to alleviate their anxiety. Please see handout on Generalized Anxiety. On Leash Reactivity: Blanko has been observed to become tense when seeing another dog while on leash. In the kennel room it is reported that Blanko will push of the kennel walls while cage fighting. Blanco will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than other dogs. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration. Leash Pulling: Blanko's previous owner states that he pulls hard while on leash. It is recommended that they be walked on a front clip harness or head halter, which will help diminish their strength through leverage. Please see handout on Leash Manners.
