Wiz
Hello, my name is Wiz. My animal id is #209153. I am a desexed male black cat at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 10 years 3 months old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 8/31/2024, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- owner elderly.
Wiz is on the at-risk list for medical reasons - Wiz has a worsening, significant anemia in care. The cause is unknown, but his hematocrit value has dropped significantly and he has been noted to be drinking excessively which can be a sign of numerous diseases. He needs additional diagnostics and care outside the capacity in shelter.

He needs additional diagnostics and care outside the capacity in shelter. What my friends at ACC say about me: I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I'm an independent kitty who likes to do my own thing. I love to be loved, but on my own terms! Let's brush up on some feline body language together! Wiz appreciates attention and petting but appears to be moderately fearful or stressed in the shelter. He will likely need time to warm up to his new home. We recommend that he go to a home with some cat experience preferred or at least be well counseled in fearful cat behavior. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an adult only home. A volunteer writes: Wiz approached me with all his swagger. He wanted to check what I was doing like a dog goes to check a knock at the door. Once he saw I was there to visit, he lowered his head just a smidge for head scritching. Not too much though, as Wiz is an independent guy with places to go, treats to eat, and a forever family to meet. I find Wiz to be extraordinarily adorable. He knows he is too, but he says there are more interesting things to discuss and do. First and foremost, can you scratch his head and also do you have any snacks? Wiz and I spent a few minutes sitting quietly and sharing snacks, which was a complete dream. He's the type of kitty I'd just love to come home to. Truthfully, I almost ended my volunteer shift without saying hello to Wiz and I'm so thankful I didn't. I don't want you to leave the shelter without visiting him either, so please be sure to stop by his condo when you come in. He'll probably meet you at the door.

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: 9/03/24 Wiz was crouched in the front of his kennel as the assessor approached, body and face tense and feet and tail tucked. Wiz made eye contact with a tense expression when spoken to and he hissed as the kennel door opened. He did not escalate further during this interaction and the assessor did not attempt pick up to reduce stress. 9/12/24 On approach, Wiz is sitting at the front of his cage with a neutral face and body, ears forward and sniffs the hand offered out to him. He accepts all pets along his head, cheeks and along his back as he arches up into the touch with his tail raised. He allows the assessor to lift him up and place him back down without issue, and eats treats offered afterwards. 10/12/24 Upon re-eval, Wiz continues to show similar behaviors as previously observed. 11/12/24 Upon re-eval, Wiz continues to show similar behaviors as previously observed.
