Glimmer
Hello, my name is Glimmer. My animal id is #232902. I am a male gray dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 8 years 2 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a agency on 7/25/2025.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.
Pre-Screener FormGlimmer is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. Glimmer in the care center has not been acclimating despite best efforts to keep her comfortable. Glimmer has escalated to growling, head whipping and snapping at staff, and is very uncomfortable with handling at times when staff are attempting to pick her up. Medically, Glimmer has been treated for matted fur,an ear infection. She does have dental disease but is otherwise healthy.
Let's get to know each other a bit more...
This pet needs emergency placement. Please click here to go to our emergency placement page for more information. Due to the detailed behavior issues, this animal is only available for foster/adoption through one of ACC's New Hope Partners. If you are interested in adopting or fostering, please fill out the pre-screener form. This animal is not directly available for adoption through ACC and is only available by completing the pre-screener form.Adoption inquiries sent directly to ACC will not receive a response. Glimmer was surrendered as a stray, so his past behaviors in a home environment are unknown. While he often seeks out affection, enjoys gentle petting on his head and chin from select handlers on his terms, he has shown discomfort when touched on his back and has occasionally reacted with growling or snapping when feeling overwhelmed. Glimmer would be best set up for success in an adult-only dog through a New Hope rescue partner due to his specific handling needs and sensitivity to certain types of touch and interactions.

It is the policy of ACC not to perform surgery on any animal over the age of 8-10 years due to the higher risks incurred in a shelter setting. The veterinarian is hereby issuing a permanent spay/neuter waiver, from the spay/neuter requirements of the City of NY due to the estimated age of this animal. ACC does recommend you consult with your veterinarian to determine if surgical sterilization is appropriate.

Summary:: Due to entering the facility as a stray, there is no prior dog-to-dog history recorded. 08/10/25 Glimmer is introduced to multiple small mixed breed novel dogs while off leash at the care center. Glimmer will growl and hard bark when approached by the other small mixed breed dogs. Glimmer will attempt to seek attention from one of the handlers and when another small mixed breed dog approaches the same handler, Glimmer growls and snarls at them while displaying a tense body. Glimmer is returned to kennel.
Summary (5):: 08/10/25 (playgroup): Glimmer is sleeping on his kuranda bed as handler approaches. He rises as handler speaks to him and comes forward, maintaining a neutral frame as handler leashes him. Glimmer allows handler to pick him up and place him onto the floor without issue. He will sniff at urine spots on his walk up to the play yard where he is switched to a drag lead and free to explore the space. See Dog-to-Dog Summary for further details on Glimmer's playgroup session. After, he is returned to kennel safely.
Summary (6):: 8/4/25: Glimmer is laying down on his bed as handler approaches. He is able to be leashed with ease and is comfortable being picked up to go outside for a walk. On the walk, he would spin around in circles due to his skin being itchy and wanting to scratch. He would stop behind the handler when he did not want to walk any further. He had no interest in treats and had no reactions to dogs or people as they passed by. He is able to continue walking on his own as he prances ahead of the handler is returned back to his kennel with no issues. 8/3/25: Glimmer was reported to head whip and growl as staff members attempted to cut off a piece of her matting in an office space. Glimmer was given a brief moment to recover before making a second attempt. Glimmer's head whipped again with his teeth bared, while growling with whale eyes. Glimmer remained tense afterwards until it returned to the kennel. 07/30/25: Glimmer's behavior remains consistent. Please refer to the previous note dated 07/29 for more details. 07/29/25: Glimmer greets the handler with a soft frame. The handler will offer Glimmer treats, which he takes softy but later drops them loosing interest. Glimmer will begin to turn in circles in anticipation. The handler opens the kennel door and Glimmer is easily leashed and Glimmer will jump in the handlers arms. The handler carries Glimmer to the Live room. When on a drag leash, Glimmer will explore the room briefly. When the handler sits down Glimmer will trot over with a loose frame and stand with front paws on the handlers kennel, soliciting attention. The handler will softly pet Glimmers head and face, he responds by nestling into the handlers hand. Glimmer will lay down between the handlers feet and decompress. Glimmer allows the handler to carry Glimmer to his kennel.
Summary (7):: 7/28/25: Glimmer greeted handler at front of kennel and was leashed with ease. He was eager to exit kennel and was lifted out using a blanket without issue. Glimmer walked to the BA room for his assessment. Glimmer chased his tail in circles incessantly. He frequently rubbed his body against handlers' legs. He displayed touch sensitivity on his back (lip lick/curl) but solicited pets on his head/neck. Glimmer would often lay under the desk. Glimmer walked back to kennel and was lifted in using a blanket without issue. 7/27 (AM): Multiple ACS staff approached a handler seeking assistance with removing their lead as they were unable to successfully remove Glimmer from his kennel for his morning walk. When the handler approaches his kennel, they see Glimmer actively lunging with his teeth bare and begin to snap at the ACS that is attempting to crack open the kennel door. The handler calls to Glimmer and offers him treats while they lift the part of the lead that is out of the kennel up and over his head. Glimmer eats the treats and pauses to growl at one of the staff behind the handler, and then goes back to eating his treats. The handler advises to give him some time to recover and they will try at a later time to take him out. (PM): Glimmer is lying down in his kennel when a handler approaches. He readily comes to the front of the kennel as the handler is unlocking his door, but he doesn't take treats. Glimmer stretches as the handler leashes him easily. His body is soft, and he climbs out of the kennel into their arms without a towel. The handler carries him to the behavior office. Once in the office, the handler sits on the couch with Glimmer while a second handler finds a collar to fit him. Glimmer jumps into the handler's lap, begins rolling and rubbing himself in the handler's lap. One handler collars Glimmer while a second one offers him cheese and ham. Once collared, Glimmer stays near the handler that brought him in, pressing his chin, cheek, and head into their hands for petting. The handler stands and walks to the computer, and Glimmer begins to whine as he could not figure out how to jump down from the couch until the handler lures him down with coaxing. He follows the handler to their desk while nearly tripping them due to him winding around their ankles. He continues to rub on their ankles before lying down under the desk. One handler leaves to tidy his kennel, and Glimmmer approaches the other handler when coaxed, rubbing into them as well. However, Glimmer begins growling on 2 occasions when handlers pet his back/rear before resuming seeking his chin or face rubbed. Once his kennel is ready, he trots back to his kennel and is covered with a towel before being picked up and placed back into his kennel without issue. -

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Glimmer so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. However, he is an active dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to Glimmer's resouece guarding, handling/touch sensitivity and the potential for defensive escalations, we recommend an adult-only home at this time. Place with a New Hope partner: Glimmer has not acclimated well to the kennel environment and has allowed only minimal handling since intake. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.
Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression
Potential challenges comments:: Resource guarding: Glimmer became tense, body blocked, and hovered over a toy during his assessment. Please see the handout on Resource Guarding. Handling/touch sensitivity | Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Glimmer has displayed sociable behaviors during his stay in care, but he has escalated occasionally to lunging, growling, baring teeth, and snapping at staff during his medical exam, when attempting to remove him from his kennel, his handling assessment, and interactions with handlers. During his evaluation, when making contact down his back and sides, he would stiffen and begin growling, showing discomfort with touch in certain areas. It is essential to avoid touching Glimmer's back, sides, or rear this time and to exercise caution when touching him in other areas, as we do not know where he may have other sensitivities. It is important to move slowly with Glimmer, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow him to initiate interactions with new people. He should never be forced to greet or interact if he is not comfortable and does not want to solicit attention. Please see handouts on Handling/touch sensitivity & Fearful/potential for defensive aggression.
