Anu
Hello, my name is Anu. My animal id is #241179. I am a desexed female black cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 4 years 3 months 1 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a returns on 1/16/2026.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.
Pre-Screener FormAnu is on the At Risk list due to behavior. Although she has warmed up to staff members, Anu has a multiple bite/scratch history in both of her previous homes without an identifiable trigger. It is in her best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. She would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give her plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with feline body language, overstimulation, and adult cat socialization and who have the time to invest in managing these behaviors on a consistent basis to avoid further bite/scratch incidents.

For A New Family to Know: Anu prefers contact on her own terms and is described as very bold/fearless. She is an indoor cat that enjoys spending her time in the bedroom. She loves to chase and pounce on toys and scratch at cardboard/horizontal surfaces. The client stated, "When she let me pet her head + she purred. I love her curiosity and the way she wants affection". Bite History: Anu was returned due to biting and swatting at the original owner and adopter. Police arrived at MACC with a DSH. The owner stated that her cat attacked her unprovoked last night on 11/6/25. She was walking around in her house when the cat jumped on her and scratched her right hand. Staff stated that there have been multiple instances of scratching in the past few weeks, but the details of the previous incidents are unknown. On 01/12/26 adopter went to lay down on her bed around 10pm when Anu joined her by laying down on her right side. A couple of minutes later adopter rolled to the left side of the bed, facing away from Anu and that's when Anu's started growling, swatting and held on and dragged down her claws leaving a long incision on her chest area. On 1/14/26 at around 7:30pm, adopter was sitting in her couch opening a Churu for her new adopted cat, Anu. However, while doing so, Anu began to low growl/vocalize and charge at the adopter. Anu began to swat and hold onto adopter's right elbow before biting her as well. Adopter would push Anu away and she would continue to charge/attack/swat. There were small scratches, puncture wounds, and dark bruising surrounding the wounds. The adopter mentioned that she placed a towel between them during the attack and was already wearing a long sleeve that did protect her a small amount. Adopter is unsure what triggers Anu and mentioned she begins to attack without warning.
ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 1/21/26 PRIOR ASSESSMENT Anu is sitting on top of her den, body tense, looking at the assessor with neutral eyes as they approach. When the kennel door is opened, anu backs away slightly, beginning to lip lick. Petting is attempted with the scratcher tool and while she is able to be pet on the head, cheeks, and shoulders with the tool, she remains tense, does not engage with petting, and lifts a paw when she is pet (did not swat). Anu is not able to be coaxed down from her den and continues to avoid contact, so pickup is unable to be attempted. 12/22/25 PRIOR ASSESSMENT Anu has made significant improvements since her initial assessment and her behavior has been consistent from the first re-evaluation (see Enrichment Notes above from 11/14/25 and 11/25/25 for more details). During the second re-evaluation, Anu was lying down curled up in the middle of the kennel in her bed with her head tucked in and tail wrapped around her body upon approach. When spoken to and opening the door, she perks up and sniffs treats offered. She welcomes petting on the head, leans in for cheek rubs, and is unbothered when stroking her body. When applying gentle upward pressure on her side and chest, she gets up to stretch and walks to the front for more attention. During pick up, she is calm and relaxed, rests her front limbs on the assessor's arm, and allows petting all over when held, hugged, and kissed for 10 seconds. After placing her back down, she continues to tolerate more petting and cheek rubs at the front. 11/14/25 PRIOR ASSESSMENT Anu was hiding in the den crouched down with a tense body and wide eyes, visible from the den side door upon approach. When removing the den cover and reaching close to offer treats on the scratcher tool, she steps back, sniffs the treats, and lip licks. She allows petting on the head, cheeks, and body with the tool and later with the assessor's hand but she does not engage with the attention. When applying gentle upward pressure on her side and chest, lifting her up to the ceiling of the den, she remains calm and tense and lip licks. After placing her back down, she continues to tolerate more petting and attention but is hesitant to be coaxed out of the den. 11/25/25 PRIOR ASSESSMENT Anu has made lovely improvements since her first assessment. She now comes forward, lively and, curious and friendly and jumped in the assessor's arms (admittedly in part because she wanted out of the kennel, but she lay quietly in his arms purring and leaning in for cheek rubs. This was repeated once more. She does have a bite/scratch history but the reasons why she was aggressive are unknown and may be connected to some aspect of the prior home that is unknown to us. *Enrichment Notes continued in GAN*
ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Moderate
VOCAL:: Quiet
CHARACTER TYPE: : Shy ,Independent
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Other,New home adjustment period,Adult cat socialization
Potential challenges comments:: Anu has a history of bite/scratch incidents that were reported to be unprovoked or there were limited details provided (see Known History for more details). Anu should be given a slow introduction to the home, one room at a time starting in a small room like a bathroom with food, litter and water because of prior owner notes [both brought in initially and returned due to multiple bite/scratch incidents]. Interact with her in this room until she seems sufficiently confident that you feel you can introduce her to the next part of the home without running the risk that she will hide. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to help introduce your cat to the home. Anu is very apprehensive of people and may attempt to flee and avoid human contact. It is difficult to predict if she will respond to socialization, but we recommend offering high value treats and food to help build a positive association to humans. Please be mindful that older cats will require more time and skill in order for them to be comfortable around people. Please speak to an adoption counselor to learn more about socialization techniques.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : New Hope Only
RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home
Recommendations comments:: Adult only home due to multiple bite/scratch history.
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Anu is sitting at the front of the kennel, eyes and body neutral as the handle approaches. She leans forward to sniff the assessor's hand before turning her head away. She is tolerant of all petting but does not engage, continuing to look away and avoid eye contact but does not show any signs of escalation throughout the interaction. Pickup is not attempted. Anu's bite and scratch history preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. She has a known history of behavioral issues that need to be addressed and is not currently interested in attention or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
