Jasper
Hello, my name is Jasper. My animal id is #211577. I am a desexed female brown tabby cat at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 1 months 1 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a aco - impound on 10/5/2024.

Jasper is on the At Risk list due to behavior. She is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. She has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to her stress levels, it is in her best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. She would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give her plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers. Medically Jasper is underweight.
Let's get to know each other a bit more...

Medically Jasper is underweight. What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! It is unknown if I have ever lived with other animals or children. I am looking for a home with a patient person. I can be slow to adjust to new environments. I prefer to take things at my own pace. I will flourish in a calm environment and a low-traffic home. I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I'm sensitive and shy. I'll need extra help from you. I would do best in a home with only adult humans. A volunteer writes: Each time I walk by Jasper's condo, I do a double take to check she's there but it's only that she prefers to be in her den at the moment. Jasper's gorgeous with a fabulously dynamic personality and though she's not ready to show us all the facets, we know it's there just as true and beautiful as her stripes. Jasper was seen on a doorstep one day. Then two days, and then three days. Waiting, yes, but also seeming to desperately try to make herself invisible. However, we can't miss a cat, especially when they've been left with a carrier nearby. This is admittedly a tough start for dear Jasper and while I can't imagine her current confusion, I am proud to imagine her brighter future. I can't wait for the day her family comes in. A family who will give Jasper time to find her kitty voice and all the time, patience, and love in the world, which is exactly what she deserves.

Details on my behavior are...
Behavior Condition: 4. Orange
KNOWN HISTORY:: Jasper was brought in as a stray, there is no known information on her behavior history in a home environment.
ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 10/9/24 FB58 IN his den, hissing and low growling as I open the cage door. He cannot be coaxed out with treats or when spoken to softly. When the scratcher tool is offered out near the den opening, he hisses and reaches out to swat at it. 10/16/24 FB1261 Remained in cat den today. When I lift the den cover she swats and lunges in my direction, behind her plexi-glass door. I keep the interaction brief and speak to her softly while slow-blinking before leaving her some treats and a toy to explore later. Very nervous girl. 10/17/24 FB79 Inside her den, Jasper harshly hisses when i approach and she has her head peaking out of the den opening with wide eyes; she quickly darts her head back in but strikes the tool 3 times while continuing to hiss when it placed near her den door in attempt to pet. she is still heard after low growl/grumbling even after the interaction was ended. 10/19/24 FB79 Today, Jasper displayed the same behaviors as the previous enrichment note; inside den with dilated eyes and hissing followed by growling/grumbling when den cover is lifted and ducking/backing away from tool with hisses when being pet with the tool slowly. 10/21/24 FB79 No hissing today but not really interested in anything either - inside his den with a neutral face and body Jasper had no reaction when i lifted the den cover and had forward eyes and almond eyes. Tolerated pets around his body with the tool while closely watching me as i spoke to him softly. 10/23/24 FB58 In den and hidden from view. He cannot be coaxed out and begins to hiss as the cage door is opened. I lightly toss some dry treats near the den opening where I can see the tip of his nose and his whiskers. He sniffs the air but doesn't eat any treats. I place a cage cover to make him more comfortable. 10/24/24 FB79 Inside her den, Jasper hisses when i approach and open her kennel door; she hisses at the treats when i toss them near her den opening and strikes the tool when i slowly bring it closer to try and pet. 10/29/24 FB1261 In cat den upon approach, completely hidden from view. She does not react when spoken to. As I open the kennel door to try and offer her treats she hisses and swats from within her den. I leave the treats on the outside for her to investigate later when she feels more comfortable and the room is empty. 10/31/24 FB79 No swatting today but continues to hiss from inside her den upon approach, when the kennel door is opened and when i toss some treats inside. She hisses one more time when i use the tool to pet her on the head but does not escalate. 11/4/24 FB79 No swatting but continued hissing and spitting when i tossed in some treaties as well as when i reached in and lifted the den cover for a better view. I left some him extra yummy treats and a cap nip toy though
ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Subdued
VOCAL:: Quiet
CHARACTER TYPE: : Bold,Timid,Independent
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful,New home adjustment period,Adult cat socialization
Potential challenges comments:: Jasper is an adult cat that may not have had many interactions with humans from an early age. She is very apprehensive of people and may attempt to lunge defensively and avoid human contact. It is difficult to predict if she will respond to socialization but we recommend offering high value treats and food to help build a positive association to humans. Please be mindful that older cats will require more time and skill in order for them to be comfortable around people.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : New Hope Only
RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home
Recommendations comments:: Due to the behavior seen in shelter and needing a longer time to warm up, the behavior team feels Jasper would do best in an adult-only home where they would be able to acclimate in a calm environment.
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: 10/08/24 Jasper is a bold, timid, and independent cat. She was lying down at the back corner of the kennel with a tense body and wide dilated eyes. She hisses upon approach and ignore treats offered. When spoken to and opening the door, she hisses again, tilts her ears to the side, lip licks, and low growls. When reaching close to pet, she lunges and swats. After a second attempt to pet, she swats with more force and hisses again. Pick up was not attempted in order to reduce stress. 11/8/24 Upon re-eval, Jasper continues to display distance increasing behavior the minute ethe scratcher tool is offered. On approach, she is in her den and completely hidden from view. The assessor places a tray with treats down and she hisses from inside the den. When the assessor then offers the scratcher tool, she sticks a paw out to swat hard at the tool multiple times. She swats again multiple times when the tool is slowly introduced into the den opening, she again swats. Pick up is not attempted to prevent further FAS. Jasper is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. She has tried to swat, scratch, is extremely fearful in the shelter environment, and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
