Alana
Hello, my name is Alana. My animal id is #246924. I am a desexed female torbie cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 3 years 2 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 2/5/2026, with the surrender reason stated as animal behavior - aggressive towards people.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.
Pre-Screener FormAlana is on the at-risk list for medical reasons. Alana has developed moderate upper respiratory infection (URI) and is not eating. Due to her behavior and stress when handling, we have not been able to provide more supportive care. Her being overweight predisposes her to developing hepatic lipidosis with prolonged anorexia. Alana needs a quiet space where she can recover from her URI and decompress. She needs more care than can be provided in a shelter setting.

I'm an independent kitty who likes to do my own thing. I prefer to call the shots and enjoy coming to you when I'm ready for pets. I would do best in a home with only adult humans. Alana is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and may require further investigation before placement in a home. She has tried to swat, scratch, and bite and is extremely fearful in the shelter environment. She does not currently tolerate petting or handling. KNOWN HISTORY:: Alana was brought in with limited information on her behavior history in a home environment. According to the client, Alana has been showing signs of aggression for the last 6 months, which has been leading to random attacks. The client stated the attacks usually happens when they arrive home from work with some of the attacks breaking skins while other attempts have not. The client stated there are no warning signs from Alana. Approximately 6-8 weeks ago (December 2025), Alana attacked the owner's wife after she came over to play with them and randomly started biting her right hand which caused the wife to go to the hospital. On 01/26/26, Alana attacked the owner randomly on his forehead and near his eye area which did cause bleeding. On 02/02/26, the owner arrived at home from work around 7 pm. After stepping inside, Alana approached him and suddenly attacked him. Alana was able to scratch his left shin, which broke skin and cause him to bleed. The owner did not seek medical attention but did self-treat at home. Upon intake, Alana started hissing, growling, and stress meowing (shrieking) at staff when attempting to open the carrier. Feline behavior assisted to transfer her into the kennel. Unable to scan due to defensive behavior.
ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 2/7/26 FB73 Alana is at the front of the kennel, hissing, loudly meowing, growling, and hard swatting outside of the kennel door immediately upon approach. She is unable to be pet or handled. 2/8/26 FB32 Sitting up at back of kennel, growling upon approach. Raises paw when reaching close, then lower paw and head to sniff tool, then leans back and raises paw again when reaching close to pet but did not make contact in order to reduce stress. 2/9/26 ACFR Alana was sitting at the back of kennel on approach. Handler slowly removed kennel cover, and she remained in place, growling softly and flicking her tail tip. When cover was fully removed, she quickly came forward, loudly vocalizing and hard swatting at the bars with a low thrashing tail. Handler stood quietly next to the kennel for a few moments, occasionally speaking softly to her. She settled in a loaf position at the door, ears forward, whiskers back, and tail wrapped around her with a twitching tail tip. When she stopped growling, soft treats were slowly put in through the bars. She stood and raised her paw to strike but did not escalate. When replacing the cover, she vocalized again and swatted through the bars. Handler paused slightly before continuing after she stopped. Cover was replaced + interaction ended. 2/22/26 ACFR Alana is sitting on top of her den in a loaf position. When approached she sits up slowly and looks at handler with forward ears and whiskers pulled back, but remains in place. A scratcher tool is slowly brought towards her and she raises her paw and hisses, then sets her paw down again and returned to a loaf position. Tool was removed and treats were placed in kennel, but she remained on top of the den watching handler.
ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Lively
VOCAL:: Talkative
CHARACTER TYPE: : Bold,Independent
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Overstimulation,Fearful,Other,New home adjustment period
Potential challenges comments:: Alana has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center, has displayed distance-increasing behavior, and does not currently allow handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide her with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus. Alana appears to be easily overstimulated. As a result of this observed behavior, we recommend adopters who are familiar with signs of behavioral arousal and agitation in cats, so that interactions can be ended before becomes overstimulated. Alana has a bite history, please see known history above.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : New Hope Only
RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home
Recommendations comments:: Due to behavior observed in shelter and bite history, adult only home.
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Alana is laying at the back of the kennel, pupils dilated, eyes wide, ears back, body tense, and loudly vocalizing and growling as the assessor approaches. When the kennel is approached and the kennel cover is slowly removed, she initially remains at the back of the kennel, stiffens, and holds up a paw. She is spoken to softly and petting with the scratcher tool is slowly attempted. As soon as the scratcher tool is near her, she rises up on her back legs, loudly vocalizing, and begins repeatedly swatting the scratcher tool with both paws with high intensity, hissing, and nipping at the tool. Interaction is ended to reduce FAS. Alana is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and may require further investigation before placement in a home. She has tried to swat, scratch, and bite and is extremely fearful in the shelter environment. She does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time. She may have a known history of behavioral issues that need to be addressed.
