When taken out of his kennel he headwhip once the lead was of him. In the room, he displayed social behavior but when attempting to collar he began to head whip. He is taken back to his kennel to decompress.***

Summary:: Although Thor was surrendered, there is no prior dog-to-dog information recorded. 03/10/25 Thor is introduced to a novel female dog while off leash at the care center. Thor doesn't greet the novel female dog at the gate, displaying a tense frame while displacing, sniffing away from the gate. Thor will explore before reapproaching the gate. When Thor reapproaches, he displays a high flagging tail as he chatters, scenting the novel female dog through the gate. He shows signs of sexual motivation, attempting to appear bigger as he stands on his tip toes, tracking the novel female dog while whining. The novel female dog will walk away as Thor remains self-present with his high flagging tail. Thor is returned to kennel, concluding the interaction.

Summary (6):: 03/27/25 (trainer note): Thor was standing at the front of his kennel with a neutral frame and walked to the behavior room. He had no interest in squeaky toys or tennis balls and preferred to engage with food enrichment. His frame was soft, and he would orient towards the handler between enrichment, practicing "sit" and "take a breath". At one point, Thor began to chew on the plastic slow feeder bowl and became stiff and whale eyed the handler. Handler tossed high value treats in the opposite direction and was able to remove the bowl away. He was leashed and returned to kennel with no issues. 03/26/25 Thor is sitting in front of his kennel with a firm frame, focused on the handler with a fast-wagging tail. Thor is easily leashed as he comes forward, proceeding outside for a walk. Exiting the kennel room, he attempts to pull towards kennels and must be quickly ran out of the kennel room. They proceed towards the exit as Thor relieves himself in the hall. They exit the building, and Thor will mark the garbage can at the entrance before proceeding to the sidewalk. Thor will maintain a moderate pace while marking different areas along the walk. When administered treats, his eyes widen, and he takes them quickly. Thor is returned to the facility and when approaching the block of the building, he will see a dog in the distance with a novel handler. Thor will look in the dog's direction, slowing up his pace until the dog is out of sight and he can focus on walking forward. Thor will enter the building as well as his kennel with no issue.

Summary (7):: 3/9/25: Thor stood at front of kennel with a neutral frame and was leashed with ease. He walked to the BA room for his assessment. Thor alternated between wiggly and somewhat tense. As handler 2 approached Thor he partially lip curled/scrunched his face showing teeth. Handlers were unsure if his lip was just stuck on his tooth. Handler 2 collared him while distracted with churu. During the knock portion of the assessment, Thor made a similar face showing teeth at handler 1 with a low grumble. Thor was returned to kennel without issue. 03/08/35 (reported): Staff report that Thor was hesitant to return to kennel after his walk and would thrash when trying to be guided in. Staff where able to lure him with treats and a slow approach. 03/08/25: Thor is standing at the front of kennel with a neutral frame as handler approaches. He is leashed with ease and upon exiting kennel will thrash briefly before recovering and pulling mildly to the Canine Behavior Office. Thor maintains a neutral frame and spends his time scenting and marking throughout the room. He will become loose and wiggly when handlers speak to him. As handlers attempt to collar him, Thor will tense slightly and head whip, looking back at assessor with whale eye. Handlers offer him spray cheese and he will lick it off of the couch but as they attempt to collar again, he will tense slightly and head whip. After a third attempt with the same result, it is decided to hold off on assessment at this time. Thor is returned to kennel safely.

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to Thor's handling/sensitivity, higher level warnings, and resource guarding displayed during his handling assessment, we recommend for Thor to be placed in an adult only home. Place with a New Hope partner: Due to all noted concerns displayed during his stay in care, the behavior department recommends Thor be placed with a New Hope placement partner who is able to provide an experienced adult-only foster home. A period of decompression is recommended to allow him to acclimate comfortably to his new environment; force-free, reward-based training only is advised when introducing Thor to new and unfamiliar situations. Consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended for guidance to safely manage/modify any behavior Thor presents with outside of the care centers.

Potential challenges comments:: Resource guarding: Thir was observed to guard a toy during his handling assessment. His response was appropriate and we cannot be certain if this behavior will be seen in a future home environment, but out of an abundance of concern we advise against ever removing items from Thor's possession without safely trading for an item or greater or equal value. Guidance from a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended to aid in safely managing/modifying this behavior in a new home environment. Please see handout on resource guarding. Handling/touch sensitivity | Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Thor would head whip when attempting to collar him for his assessment and during the handling portion. He also escalated to lip curling and rumbling at the assistant during the knock portion. It is important to always go slow and give Thor the option to walk away from any social interaction. He should never be forced to approach anything that he is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be Thor’s choice to approach a new person or thing and be respectful of any warnings. Thor would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to his new surroundings.
