Dilal

Hello, my name is Dilal. My animal id is #243255. I am a male white dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 8 years 2 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a agency on 12/8/2025.

Dilal is on the at-risk list for medical reasons. He is a gentle senior dog with hematuria, prostatic cysts and a heart murmur. He needs to be neutered and have his prostate tracked after surgery with ultrasound to treat his condition.

What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! I prefer to call the shots and enjoy coming to you when I'm ready for pets. I would do best in a home with only adult humans. I love to be loved, but on my own terms! Let's brush up on some canine body language together! I have medical needs that staff will address with you when you meet me.

[Spay/Neuter Waiver - Age] It is the policy of ACC not to perform surgery on any animal over the age of 8-10 years due to the higher risks incurred in a shelter setting. The veterinarian is hereby issuing a permanent spay/neuter waiver, from the spay/neuter requirements of the City of NY due to the estimated age of this animal. ACC does recommend you consult with your veterinarian to determine if surgical sterilization is appropriate. [Spay/Neuter Waiver - Permanent] Your newly adopted pet has been diagnosed with Heart Murmur and the staff veterinarians are issuing a PERMANENT waiver from the spay/neuter requirements of the City of NY. ACC does not have the facility to safely sterilize your pet with his/her current condition. However, your veterinarian will provide consultation on whether this procedure can or should be performed under their supervision. Follow up care at your regular veterinarian is recommended to ensure continued treatment and proper oversight of your pet's health. All costs for follow up care and subsequent surgery is at the expense of the adopter.

Summary (7):: 12/21/25: Dilal is at the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He is leashed while distracted with a treat and taken to the street for his walk, he exits kennel and walks with handler outside calmly. Outside he walks with handler and does not pull while walking, he stops to sniff spots on the street and to relieve himself. He solicits social interaction with handler when they sit and allows petting, leaning into handler. Dilal ignores people and dogs he sees during his walk and after a while he is brought back inside and returned to kennel. 12/17/25: Dilal is at the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He is leashed while distracted with treats and taken to the yard for some dog to dog interactions. In between waiting for dogs Dilal is highly social with handlers and leans into handlers legs soliciting social interaction and pets. He will refuse treats when offered and nuzzle his head into handlers hand instead, he allows pets along his back, head and neck. Information on Dilal's dog-dog interactions can be found in his behavior assessment. Once finished in the yard he is brought back to kennel where he vocalizes a few times and pulls moderately upon returning. He needs to be slightly muscled into kennel, interaction is ended shortly after. 12/9/25: Bang! is at the front of the kennel with a soft body. He is easily leashed and brought out the room. On the street, Bang! walks with no leash tension. He shows no dog reactivity and no interest in passersby; however, he does turn around a few times to two people talking until they've walked past. During the walk, Bang! stops to sniff a few times, and allows pets from the handler. He is then brought in for his assessment (see assessment notes). Afterwards, the handler clips their leash and returns Bang! to his kennel with ease.

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Dilal so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 4

Recommendations:: No children (under 13)

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to fearful behavior we recommend a home with no children.

Potential challenges: : Fearful

Potential challenges comments:: Fearful: Dilal has been obsevered to have a tense body, tucked tail, and whale eyes during medical. During his assessment he was avoidant of the handler. They should never be forced to approach anything that they are uncomfortable with or submit to petting or handling. It should always be their choice to approach a new person or thing. Dilal would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to their new surroundings. Please see handout on Decompression Period.
