Animal Profile

Chirop

Hello, my name is Chirop. My animal id is #250782. I am a male gray cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 3 years 1 months old.

I came into the shelter as a agency on 3/28/2026.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Chirop is on the at-risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. He has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

What my friends at ACC say about me: I am looking for a home with a patient person. I can be slow to adjust to new environments. I prefer to take things at my own pace. A volunteer writes: Chirop can't seem to pinpoint exactly what it was he did wrong, but since he was left in a crate in a building hallway when he was no longer wanted, he's been trying to fix whatever it was. We've assured Chirop that there's nothing he could've done differently, but we also know that to feel welcomed and wanted is a beautiful thing. It's in what we do rather than what we say, so we've been offering treats to begin a friendship and small pets here and there to build his confidence and understanding that things are going to work out just fine. Chirop only needs a little chance and is hoping you'll extend a chance and some love his way.

Behavior Condition: 3. Yellow

KNOWN HISTORY:: Chirop was brought in as a stray, there is no known information on his behavior history in a home environment.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: Prior Assessment 3/31/26: Chirop appeared a little bit nervous inside the den, hunched with a wrapped tail, a tight body, and large pupils, but tolerated petting after sniffing treats. He lip licked a bit and seemed unsure, but after a little more petting and petting along his back, he hissed hard and partially lunged as if to swat without actually doing it. 4/23/26 He was crouched behind the den on approach, alert with wide eyes. When spoken to softly, he lip-licked and allowed head petting with the scratcher tool. He ignored offered treats, stood watching from a distance. 4/24/26 Crouched behind the litter box inside the cubby. Allows brief pets but spat and hissed ending the interaction. Placed hidey sign on kennel door to help him acclimate. 4/25/26 Vol. Is in cubby lying down facing forward when approached, spoken to and door opened. Backed up a little bit. Offered dry treats on scratcher tool and left them in front of him, ignored treats. Gave slow blinks to him, Blinked back.  Sat up. Offered lickable treat on scratcher tool. Sniffed then ignored. Tried to pet with scratcher tool, turned head to look at tool, backed up and hissed. Offered lickable treat on scratcher tool. Ignored. Left small amount in tray nearby. 4/26/26 Vol. Chirop was fearful. He was in the top cubby, lying on his side. When I opened the cubby door, he backed up into crouch position against the back wall. He didn’t move or hiss when I put treats down in the front of the cubby. I shut the door after putting down the treats. I went back to him later, and he was still in crouch. I slow talked to him, but he started to low growl; so, I ended the interaction. 4/27/26 FB47 Chirop, who was in the back of the cubby wrapped in a towel and sitting on his haunches, appeared slightly concerned but sniffed treats. He then allowed an approach with treats in my hand, and when I started to pet his cheek, he briefly allowed it and then, without warning, swatted me fairly hard. 4/29/26 Avoids contact slowly retreating. He began to lift up paw and swats the scratcher tool. Ended to reduce stress.

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Subdued

VOCAL:: Quiet

CHARACTER TYPE: : Bold,Shy ,Skittish,Independent

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful,New home adjustment period,Adult cat socialization

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : New Hope Only

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Chirop stayed tense and alert, crouched with wide eyes and forward ears. He cautiously moved back and watched from a distance. When approached for contact, he briefly lifted a paw but then swatted the tool. The session was ended to reduce his stress. Chirop is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. He has tried to swat is extremely fearful in the shelter environment and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
