Cisco
Hello, my name is Cisco. My animal id is #250046. I am a male brown tabby cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 7 years 1 months 1 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a aco - owner surrender on 4/9/2026, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- death of owner.
Cisco is on the at-risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. He has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.
Let's get to know each other a bit more...

What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! I'm an independent kitty who likes to do my own thing. I can be slow to adjust to new environments. I prefer to take things at my own pace. I am looking for a home with a patient person. Cisco is not open to interaction at this time and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. Because his previous owner reports he enjoy being brushed and is playful in a home environment, we believe the behavior seen in the care center is shelter-specific and this cat would make a great pet, but is really struggling in the shelter environment. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, home with adopters who are willing to work with a cat who needs time and patience to help him adjust to their new home.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: PRIOR ASSESSMENT 4/12/26 Cisco is standing upright in his den, body tense, ears back, eyes wide, and pupils dilated as the assessor approaches. When the kennel door is opened and the den cover is lifted, Cisco begins low growling, backing himself into the corner of the den. Treats are offered but he does not respond to them. When petting is attempted with the scratcher tool, Cisco begins repeatedly swatting hard at the tool, hissing and growling. He is given some time to settle before interaction is attempted again. When he is softly spoken to and the assessor attempts petting with the scratcher tool once more, he hard swats and bites at the tool. Interaction is ended to reduce FAS. 4/14/26 FB47 Cisco was in his den and appeared fearful, with large pupils, sideways ears, and a hunched body. He was grumbling, and I let him sniff treats through the den door and then gave him some, which he ignored. 4/19/26 Vol. In den, facing away from the portal. Allowed a cup of chicken and treats to be dropped into den, did not visibly move or react. Checked back after 5 minutes. Hissed when door was opened and spat when den cover was raised but appeared to have eaten chicken! When offered more chicken on the tool, peered out portal with dilated eyes and lip licked. Allowed cup to be dropped into den, and after considering, cautiously ate. Inside his den, Cisco hissed and pounced at the glass of the den when cover was lifted, but recovered quickly, ears up, whiskers down, eyes narrow but pupils not dilated. Appears stressed, licking his lips rapidly. He’s also sneezing a lot and possibly breathing through his mouth. No reaction to crunchy treats deposited inside his den. We continued sweet talk but given his initial reaction and swatting history, no attempt was made to invade his space with the tool. He relaxed over time but could not be coaxed to leave the den. 4/25/26 ACFR Cisco was sitting in his den with a relaxed body, when den cover was lifted, he sat up and returned slow blinks. He readily ate squeeze up from scratcher tool while tolerating simultaneous petting. When he was finished, he leaned heavily into cheek rubs and lightly kneaded the floor. He then backed away and settled into a crouch with a flicking tail, but continued to slow blink at handler. Did not react when cover was replaced.
ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Subdued
VOCAL:: Quiet
CHARACTER TYPE: : Bold,Shy ,Independent
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful,New home adjustment period
Potential challenges comments:: Cisco has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide him/her with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 4
RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home
Recommendations comments:: Due to behavior observed in the care center, adult only home.
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Cisco is inside his den low grumbling on approach. The den cover is slowly lifted and Cisco looks at the assessor with a tense face and flattened ears. He continues grumbling as a scratcher tool with squeeze up is slowly extended into the den. Cisco sniffs the tool and gets some squeeze up on his nose that he licks off, but does not move forward. The tool is slowly removed and Cisco remains in his sitting position in the den.
