Animal Profile

Pikachu

Hello, my name is Pikachu. My animal id is #165161. I am a desexed male black dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 5 years 4 months old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 6/23/2026, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- no time for animal.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Pikachu is at risk due to behavioral concerns. While Pikachu has readily accepted treats with a soft mouth and is somewhat easy to remove from the kennel, he has not acclimated well to the shelter environment. He has shown concerning levels of escalation towards handlers when returned to his kennel. When attempting to conduct his handling assessment, Pikachu began growling at the assessor when they greeted him. His warning was respected, and he was returned to his kennel. Once in his kennel, he spins around on the handler, growling, hard barking, lunging, snapping, and on one occasion briefly thrashed coming out of the kennel, but needed to be stiff-armed upon return. Medically, Pikachu is underweight and has mild-moderate dental disease.

In the prior home it is noted that Pikachu knows the cue "sit" and loves car rides. He is not bothered by being handled and allows his family to bathe him with ease. He enjoys quality time and will likely be in whatever room has people in it. Pikacu has not acclimated well to the kennel environment and has allowed only minimal handling since intake. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.

Date of assessment:: 6/24/2026

Summary:: 06/24/26: Pikachu is brought to the behavioral office for an assessment. He accepts treats from the handler but begins lip licking and shows a closed, tense muzzle when the helper approaches. Pikachu moves away, and when the assessor calls him back, he begins to growl. When taken back to his kennel he turns around and begins to snap and growl. Due to this, a handling assessment will not be condcuted at this time. ***02/23/23: Prior behavioral upon request.***

Summary:: According to Pikachu's previous owner(s), Pikachu is outgoing with familiar dogs. 06/24/26 Pikachu is introduced to a novel female while off leash. He approaches the gate with a slightly tense frame, high tail, and displays whale eye. He does not readily move from the gate and is eventually guided away by handler. Previous Stay 2023: Pikachu was surrendered as a stray so his past behavior with other dogs is unknown. 2/23: When off leash at the Care Center, Pikachu is introduced to a novel female dog. He is tense and uncomfortable as he greets her with his hackles raised and lip licks, but manages his discomfort by walking away to keep to himself.

Summary (5):: 6/25/26: Pikachu was at front of kennel with a neutral body as handler approached. He was easily leashed using a treat lure and taken for a street walk. Pikachu walked in front of handler with light leash pressure. He accepted treats. He stopped a few times to sniff and investigate. He was returned to kennel with no issue. 06/24/26(BA): Pikachu is standing at the front of his kennel and allows the handler to leash him with ease. He is brought to the assessment room where handlers approach him with open hands and soft vocalizations. He immediately begins growling at the handler, and due to this behavior, the assessment is not conducted. When being returned to his kennel, he turns around after entering and begins snapping, growling, and hard barking at the handler. He is secured back inside his kennel without any further issues. For more information, see Behavioral Assessment.

Summary (6):: 6/24/26: Pikachu is at the front of his kennel with a neutral frame. He will take treats with a soft mouth and will then begin to whine and demand bark when the handler says "do you wanna go on a walk?" He is leashed with ease but will immediately thrash as he exits the kennel. The handler will remove him from room quickly and then wait for him to stop thrashing and start moving. He is then brought out to the yard and is not collared due to the thrashing. (see dog-dog for more info) He will attempt to jump on a staff member before exiting the yard and is returned to kennel. He will pull hard into kennel and lunge forward, hard barking, before the handler closes the door so they have to stiff arm him in kennel and shut the door quickly. The leash gets caught in the door and Pikachu will hard bark, lunging at the handler's hand higher up on the kennel door as they attempt to remove the leash. He is secured safely in kennel and will continue barking as the handler exits the room. *Notes from prior stay* 3/4/23 Pm: Pikachu is in front of his kennel when the handler approaches wagging his tail and following the handler's movements. The handler opens Pikachu kennel door and tosses him treats which he begins to eagerly eat and the handler clips their rope on Pikachu collar. The handler walks Pikachu out of the kennel room and Pikachu displays a loose body and loose leash while leaving the center. Pikachu pulls toward yard birds and pulls and gives a bark at novel dogs with handlers. Pikachu refocuses with treats and continues the walk. Pikachu Relieves himself on the walk and starts to pick on random litter off the ground but drops it back down. Pikachu notices an amazon working washing their car and stops and stares giving a tail wag and small play bow when the worker stops and talks to him across the street. On the walk, he stops and looks at every strange noise and displays a high tail, and checks in on the handler. The handler walks Pikachu back to the center where he notices a familiar medical staff member in the yard he stops in front of them and displays a loose and wiggly body and sits for treats and pets. Pikachu is led back into the kennel room and hops into his kennel allowing the handler to unclip his leash.

Summary (7):: 3/4/23 AM: The handler approached Pikachu's kennel with treats. She offers him a few and while he is eating them she clips his collar with a leash. He walks out and follows the handler to the pens. Outside, Pikachu runs around and then solicits attention. He sits for treats and allows petting. The handler throws a few tennis balls, but he doesn't seem interested. When the session is over, he walks back to his kennel without issue. 3/3/23: Pikachu was at the front of his kennel barking. When the handler attempted to place her slip lead on him, he moved back and bark. He became frustrated and barked so a second handler used treats to lure him to the front. Once the handler place a slip lead on him, he followed her out the kennel and room. In the pens, she could attach a leash to his collar and let him run around. He attempted to chase a few birds before approaching the handler for treats. She cued him to sit, which he readily did. After his session was done, he walked back to his kennel without issue. 3/3/23: Pikachu was reported lunging at a staff member in front of his kennel when taking him out of his kennel and leashing biting when roping him inside the kennel.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to Pikachu's fearfulness, we recommend an adult-only home. Place with a New Hope partner: Pikachu came into the care cneter as an owner surrender due to his owner not having time for him anymore.

Potential challenges: : Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Low threshold for arousal

Potential challenges comments:: Low threshold for arousal/Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Pikachu is noted to bark at people.The handler will remove him from room quickly and then wait for him to stop thrashing and start moving. When taken back to his kennel he turns around and begins to snap and growl.Handling should prioritize maintaining distance, allowing decompression time, and using low-stress, controlled approaches to reduce escalation. Please see the handout on arousal/Fearful/potential for defensive aggression. Anxiety: Pikachu appears anxious at the care center, panting incessantly. If Pikachu displays anxious behavior in his future home, we recommend puzzle toys, long walks, and giving him other things to focus on to alleviate his anxiety. Positive reinforcement, force-free training only should be used. See handout on Generalized Anxiety.' On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: Pikachu will alert bark when people enter the home but quickly settles down. He is also known to pull on the leash when he is excited. Please see the handout On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration.
