Kelpie came to us as a stray (with ID) at the Manhattan Animal Care Center and is still learning about new people and places. She's a sweet, thoughtful girl who appreciates slow introductions and someone who will give her time to settle. Kelpie is curious and ready to learn - she responds best to patient, calm handling and gentle training, and she loves affection on her own terms. My Ideal Home A calm, adult-only home where someone has the time to work with her on training and build confidence through slow, positive introductions. A predictable routine, gentle guidance, and a patient adopter who can read her body language will help Kelpie thrive. A secure, quiet environment with chances for short, confidence-building outings is ideal. Other Fun Facts Kelpie has a charming dark spotting in one eye that makes her extra memorable. She enjoys attention when she's ready and shows a playful, curious side once she trusts you. She's motivated to learn - brush up on canine body language with her and you'll have a loyal student.

Summary:: 1/14/26: Kelpie greets another dog at the gate with a tense body and hard eyes.

Summary (5):: 2/22/26- Kelpie is at the middle of her kennel with a loose and wiggly body, she barks at the handler then starts to bark at the wall connecting to the neighboring kennel jumping up. Handler presents treats and she comes to the front, taking it. Handler then sprays cheese on her kennel door, as she licks at it handler is able to easily leash. She is taken for a street walk where she gently takes treats from handler's hand and is social with them. She walks with a mild pull towards spots to sniff but will walk loose leash next to handler seeking treats. She walks zig zagging under handler's legs keeping focus on them. She has no reaction to people passing her and allows handler to scratch her head, neck and back. She starts to pull when returning to the building. She is easily clipped and returned to kennel without issue. 2/20/26: Kelpie is at the front of the kennel with a loose wiggly body. Handler tries leashing her but Kelpie begins to bite with mild pulling of the leash. Handler attempts to coax with treats but Kelpie does not let go. Handler then uses cheese spray to distract Kelpie while leashing and is successful. Once out of the room, Kelpie mildly pulls through the hallway and down the stairs. Once outside, Kelpie begins sniffing ground before relieving herself. During the walk, Kelpie encounters other dogs on the street but does not show interest. After the walk, Kelpie begins slightly pulling back into building where she is placed inside her kennel with no issue. 2/20/26: As handler approaches kennel, Kelpie is initially loose and wiggly bodied, jumping at kennel door. When kennel door is unlocked, Kelpie begins to jump a more frantically, and is now alternating between paws on front kennel door and the dividing her kennel to neighboring. She is strain faced, panting, and vocalizing. It should noted the neighboring kennel is empty at this time. When attempting to leash Kelpie bites on to leash firmly, pulls into kennel. She drops when treats are offered and used as a lure, but immediately grabs the leash again. Handler leaves to get spray cheese. The spray cheese is effective to distract Kelpie when being leashed. Kelpie pulls moderately out of kennel, does not show interest to pop-up crates in hallway. On sidewalk Kelpie is pulling consistently, moderately, panting, hypersalivating, strain faced. Kelpie does take treats offered, and checks in visually when verbally cued. Kelpie maintains heavy panting and strained face for most of walk. Kelpie relieved themself, after some time is walked back to MACC. Kelpie re-enters kennel without issue and picks up a plush toy left in kennel.

Summary (6):: 2/13/26: As handler approaches Kelpie's kennel, she is at the front of the kennel with a loose, wiggly body, jumping up and putting her front paws on the kennel door. Handler is easily able to direct her down with a treat and leashes with ease using a treat as a lure. As she exits, Kelpie pulls back into the room towards the neighboring kennel briefly, but is easily redirected by the handler calling to her. Kelpie is brought out to the street and pulls moderately throughout the walk. She allows handler to transition the slip lead to a harness while distracted with treats. Kelpie maintains a loose, wiggly body, at times jumping on handler socially. Kelpie will check in with handler when they call to her or squeak a toy and she is rewarded with treats when she does so; she takes treats gently from handler's hand. Handler brings Kelpie back inside and returns her to her kennel without issue. After entering her kennel; Kelpie begins to pace, jump up at the walls, and whine. Handler leaves her with treats and ends the interaction. 2/12/26: Kelpie has been observed to leash bite when being leashed. Cheese and treats have helped to distract her. 2/7/26: Kelpie is at the front with a soft body, the linen in her kennel is shredded. Kelpie is easily leashed and upon exit immediately turns to kennel fight with the neighboring dog. She is kept away and brought downstairs. She will jump up exuberantly on the handler. Kelpie is directed down with treats. Before exiting the building, Kelpie pulls towards dogs in the hallway and towards their rooms, her body is tense. She is walked to the street where she relieves herself. She walks ahead of the handler with mild pulling and loose body before she is walked back to the shelter. Kelpie pulls hard back to kennel and is returned without issue. 2/6: Volunteer note - Kelpie was a playful girl, moderately pulled on leash, but quickly pays attention and sits calmly when treats are used to redirect. Took treats gently. Kelpie was loose and wiggly the entire interaction, and accepted petting from the staff.

Summary (7):: 1/28/26: Kelpie is curled up sleeping in kennel. Handler unlocks the kennel and she raises her head. She stands up with a soft body as the leash is presented. She is easily leashed. Kelpie exits the kennel, she pulls towards the passing kennels looking towards the dogs with a tense body. Kelpie is taken out of the room and brought to the street. Kelpie walks past some familiar handlers and she approaches them and bows with a very wiggly body and wagging tail. She poses for photos and is given treats which she takes gently. Kelpie jumps up on the handlers socially and allows brief petting, before she continues on her walk. She relieves herself and when a person passes close by she stops and becomes tense. Handler quickly calls her away. Kelpie is then walked back to the shelter and pulls hard to the passing kennels. She is returned without issue. 1/20/26: Kelpie is laying in kennel as the handler approaches. A treat is given which she eats and then gives slight tail wags. The kennel door is opened and she is easily leashed before retreating slightly. She is coaxed towards the front and easily lifted out of the top kennel and placed on the ground. She immediately pulls towards the dogs barking in kennels in front of her, but is able to be walked out of the room with mild leash pressure. When entering the yard she immediately settles and enters a pen without issue. She engages socially with the handler and takes treats gently. A large dog walks past the pen and kelpie walks over towards the fence with a neutral body both otherwise does not react; the handler calls her over and she comes and takes a treat gently. The slip lead is placed and drag leash removed without issue. When returning to the building she is picked up while in the hallway and then placed in the top kennel without issue. 1/11/26: Kelpie is laying down in her kennel as handler approaches. She is able to be leashed with ease and is tense when being picked up. When place on the ground, she lunges for a dog that was barking intensely in kennel. She would try to pull back towards the dog in kennel while vocalizing. She has no interest in treats until reaching outside for a walk. On the walk, she would pull towards people and dogs. She is then taken to the behavior room for her assessment. In the room, she would head whip with a tense body while being petted. Please see behavior assessment notes for more details. She has a tense body as the handler picks her up and is placed back inside of her kennel.

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Kelpie so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 4

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Recommend no dog parks

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to on leash reactivity we recommend an adult only home. No Dog Parks: Due to on leash reactivity we recommend no trips to the dog park.

Potential challenges: : Fearful,Anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Leash-biting

Potential challenges comments:: Fearful/ Leash Biting: Kelpie has been obsvered to be fearful while in care. Noted to thrash and bite the leash when leash pressure is felt. They should never be forced to approach anything that they are uncomfortable with or submit to petting or handling. It should always be their choice to approach a new person or thing. kelpie would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to their new surroundings. Please see handout on Decompression Period. Anxiety: Kelpie was obsvered to be whining and barking often during intake. If Kelpie displays anxious behavior in their future home, we recommend puzzle toys, long walks, and giving them other things to focus on to alleviate their anxiety. Positive reinforcement, force-free training should be used. Please see handout on Generalized Anxiety. On Leash Reactivity: Kelpie has been obsvered to lunge and vocalize towards the other dogs in the kennel room, after being moved away Kelpie turns and tries to reenter the room. This behavior is not able to be redirected. While on the street Kelpie will lunge and vocalize towards people. This is also not able to be easily redirectable. Kelpie will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than dogs and other stimuli. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration.
