Animal Profile

Clamorous

Hello, my name is Clamorous. My animal id is #209965. I am a female black dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 1 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a stray on 9/12/2024.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Clamorous is currently at risk due to behavioral reasons. Clamorous has been slow to warm up to handlers, allowing leashing and walking but does not get close enough to handler to allow petting. She lunged and barked at handlers during intake. Medically, she is apparently healthy.

Let's get to know each other a bit more...

Clamorous has been slow to warm up to handlers, allowing leashing and walking but does not get close enough to handler to allow petting. She lunged and barked at handlers during intake. Medically, she is apparently healthy. Clamorous arrived at MACC as a stray with no known history. During intake she was observed to hard bark and lunge towards handlers. Throughout her stay in care Clamorous has been observed to remain tense and nervous when out on walks and hesitant to exit her kennel. She has been observed to whale eye handlers and have a stiff body. Due to the detailed behaviors we recommend an experienced adult only home.

Behavior Condition: 3. Yellow

Date of intake:: 9/12/2024

Spay/Neuter status:: No

Means of surrender (length of time in previous home):: Stray, No known history

Date of assessment:: 9/15/2024

Summary:: Clamorous has been observed to hard bark and lunge towards handlers while on leash. During interactions she remains tense and fearful. Due to the high levels of fear, stress, and anxiety displayed. Clamorous is not a candidate to receive a handling assessment at this time.

Summary:: 9/19/24: When greeting another dog at the fence, Clamorous is initially neutral bodied. She then shows teeth.

Summary (6):: 9/18/24: Clamorous is laying on her bed at the back of her kennel but comes forward as handler is unlocking the kennel. She is easily leashed and walked on the street. She is tense bodied and will walk to the end of the leash and look back at handler with wide eyes. Handler offers her a treat which she takes from handlers hand. She is hyper vigilant and will periodically look back at handler with wide eyes. She is returned to kennel without issue. 9/14/24: Clamorous is laying in the back of her kennel as handler approaches. She does not approach kennel door and remains laying in her bed, handler produces treats and tosses them near Clamorous but she ignores them. Handler attempts to coax her forward for a while, but she continues to lie in the back. Handler takes a step back and waits a bit before she begins slowly investigating and taking the treats scattered around the kennel. Handler slowly introduces the leash and is able to lasso Clamorous after a few attempts. She exits kennel and is taken to the street. She immediately displays a low and stiff body posture, she flinches and will turn towards people in her general vicinity but doesn't lunge or bark at them. She will pull away from people passing by her and will turn to look at people walking behind her even at moderate distances. She is flighty and hyper vigilant throughout her walk but returns to kennel without issue.

Summary (7):: 9/14/24: (PM): Clamorous is laying at the back of her kennel on her bed. Handler tosses in treats but she does not move from her spot. The kennel door is opened slightly and handler speaks to her in a high pitched voice tossing more treats but Clamorous remains on her bed, watchful of the handler. All attempts to lure her forward are futile. Interaction is ceased due to stress levels. 9/13/24: Clamorous is standing in the front of her kennel as handler approaches. She stares at handler and when offered treats ignores them initially but when offered higher value treats, investigates and eats them. She begins taking treats from hand and is leashed with the help of more chicken. Once leashed and her door is opened, she stops and stares at handler for a bit, she exits kennel after a few more moments and is brought to the yard for her walk. Once outside she looks around and sniffs briefly before walking forward with handler. Clamorous does not pull when walking but seems hesitant at certain points and will turn and stare at handler before continuing to walk. She does not take treats and when attempting to clip her leash she turns and looks at handler so handler returns her without clipping and uses a hook to remove leash from kennel which Clamorous tolerates. 9/12/24: The behavior team was asked to assist in bringing Clamorous into the shelter as she was barking and lunging at staff and passerbyers on the street. Clamorous was laying next to the bench out front of the shelter. Handlers approach, keeping distance but close enough to speak to finder and hand over the leash. As this is happening, Clamorous comes forward comes forward, tense body. Handler tosses treats, which she sniffs but does not engage. She remains tense and focused on handlers. As finder is attempting to place ACC leash on Clamorous, she lunges forward towards staff member. Finder has a good hold onto her collar, so she is unable to reach the staff member. One handler goes behind Clamorous at a distance and finder is able to hand them one of the leashes. The first handler tries to distract Clamorous as the second leash is handed to the second handler. Clamorous is shut down when entering the building, low body, hypervigilant and goes into her kennel without issue. The hook is used to remove the leashes. She allows this but is tense and watchful of the

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Clamorous so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to on leash reactivity and fearful behavior we recommend a home with no children. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.

Potential challenges: : Fearful,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration

Potential challenges comments:: Fearful: Clamorous has been observed to remain tense and fearful during her stay in shelter. She has been observed to have a tense stiff body and show whale eye while handlers interact. They should never be forced to approach anything that they are uncomfortable with or submit to petting or handling. It should always be their choice to approach a new person or thing. Clamorous would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to their new surroundings. Please see handout on Decompression Period. On Leash Reactivity: During intake Clamorous has been observed to hard barks and lunge towards handlers. Clamorous is also observed to rush towards handlers. Clamorous will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than other people. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration.
