Diamond
Hello, my name is Diamond. My animal id is #174022. I am a desexed female brown tabby cat at the Brooklyn Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 7 years 3 months 1 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a returns on 7/23/2023.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.
Pre-Screener FormDiamond is on the emergency placement list due to behavior. Although Diamond has shown consistent level 2 behavior in shelter, she a multiple bite/scratch history from her two previous homes. Due to her stress levels, it is in her best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. She would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give her plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.
Let's get to know each other a bit more...

A volunteer writes: Dazzling Diamond is so accomplished at making new friends. As one of our longer stays at the Care Center, she has amassed a most loving staff and volunteer fan club. We (I'm a proud member) love to see how Diamond continues to grow and shine as she goes. Her fan club is known to bring treats, but treats or no treats, Diamond is always ready to share a little nuzzle and headbutt. When she's not sitting like the most beautiful little kitty statue at the front of her condo, she's curled up and napping in her comfy bed. Whenever I get to see Diamond, she is quick with an affectionate greeting and is happy to hang out for as long as I'm able to! Whenever I move on to her neighbor, Diamond patiently goes back to waiting her next turn. We are all hoping her next fan club will be staffed by her forever family and we know she will be more than happy to share her love with them!

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 6/13/23 Resting in cat den today, completely hidden from view. She does not respond when offered treats and I am unable to coax her out with sweet talk or a catnip toy. I spray some feliway and end the session - hopefully she will investigate the treats later when the room is empty and quiet. Needs time. 6/16/23 In her den with a tense face and body, eyes slightly wide and dilated, she shows no interest in the tray of squeeze up offered to her near the den opening, and cannot be coaxed out of the den with sweet talk, petting was not pushed at this time. 6/20/23 In cat den upon approach, completely hidden from view. She pokes her cute little head out when offered a squeeze-up and I speak to her softly while slow-blinking for a few moments. She remains mostly in her den and watches me with wide eyes and dilated pupils. I leave her a toy as well before finally ending the session. She is curious but when I check on her later I see that she still has not eaten her treaties. Needs more time. 6/23/23 Out of her den and at the front of her cage vocalizing with tail raised, soft face and body, ears forward. She takes dry treats offered and accepts all pets offered along head and back, leaning into cheek pets while purring. 6/25/23 Resting inside den, no response when coaxed. I removed the den cover and she remains calm, watching me with almond-shaped eyes. She leans forward to sniff my hand and leans in for cheek rubs, rolling onto her side, and places her paw pad on the glass window. She continues to rub her cheeks and lean in for attention, but may be feeling too comfortable to come out. 7/25/23 In den upon approach, initially hidden from view. She vocalizes, stretches and steps forward towards the front of her kennel when spoken to, tail raised. She allows petting along her head and body while leaning in, raising her tail and looking at the assessor with soft eyes. She did not show any concerning behaviors today. Ate all the treats offered.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : New Hope Only
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Diamond is displaying nervous behavior in the care center. She was hiding inside her den but will peer out from the opening, her eyes dilated and her ears slightly tilted. She makes eye contact with the assessor when spoken to, but could not be coaxed to come out of her den. She remains in place when the door opens and leans forward slightly to sniff the assessor's hand when placed near the opening, and then accepts petting. She closes her eyes and leans into the assessor's hand, allowing cheek rubs. She seems to appreciate it and will close her eyes, but will tense up when hearing noise and movement in the room. Although timid initially, Diamond has now warmed up to the shelter environment. Diamond was hiding in her cat den as the assessor approached. When spoken to, Diamond steps out of her den and towards the front of the kennel with a raised tail and ears forward as she begins vocalizing. Diamond allows petting along her head and body after the kennel door opens while leaning in, raising her tail and looking at the assessor with soft eyes. Diamond tolerates being lifted and placed back down with no signs of escalation. Although Diamond shows consistent level 2 behaviors here in our shelter, she has been returned on DOH holds multiple times under very similar circumstances. For this reason the behavior team must release her for rescue only.
