Summary:: According to Remy's previous owner(s), with familiar dogs she is playful, friendly and outgoing. With unfamiliar dogs she is shy, preferring contact on her terms. on/off leas are not specified. 10/09/25 Remy is introduced to a male helper dog while off leash at the care center. Remy is soft as she approaches the gate with tail wags. Remy is taken into the male dog's pen in order to interact face-to-face. Remy will enter the pen and approach the male dog with a stiff body that gradually becomes more tense the closer she gets. She sniffs the male dog, and the male dog protects his genitals, reluctant to allow Remy to sniff them. The male dog moves away from Remy, attempting to solicit play but as Remy attempts to mount him and he doesn't allow it, Remy becomes frustrated, snarling at him. She is quickly moved away and returned to kennel shortly after, concluding the interaction. 10/02/25 Remy is introduced at the gate to a novel male dog while off leash at the care center. Remy is reluctant to approach but will slowly make her way over to the gate line displaying a tucked tail. Remy doesn't greet the male dog, walking away and heavily panting. Remy is returned to kennel, concluding the interaction.
Summary (6):: 10/16/25: Remy is at the back of her kennel laying on her bed when approached, and immediately begins to walk up the door and sit. Remy is easily leashed and walked out of kennel to be brought into the behavior office. Remy is highly social with all staff inside of the office, leaning in for petting and finding a tennis ball which she holds onto. Remy will zoom around the room with the ball, squeaking it and leaning into petting when coaxed. The handler leaves to clean her kennel, and when returned had a different tennis ball. Remy is not willing to trade for treats but trades for a different ball. Remy is taken back to kennel where she enters fine, but immediately begins to run out, having to be put back into kennel again before attempting to run out again. Remy has to be stiffed armed to prevent her from running out, and her drag leash is removed while distracted by treats. 10/14/25: Behavior handler enters the kennel room and notes that a staff member is having difficulty returning Remy to kennel. Remy is heavy panting with wide, dilated eyes and actively pulling/crawling away from kennel. Behavior handler offers high value treats in order to lure her into kennel, but Remy shows no interest. Behavior handler takes the lead and muscles Remy into kennel, and she immediately bolts back out before they can close the door. They muscle her in a second time and quickly close the door as she attempts to run out. 10/12/25: Remy is standing at the front of her kennel with a loose and wiggly body and allows the handler to leash her with ease. She is brought outside for an enrichment walk and then escorted to the play yard, where she eagerly engages in a game of fetch. Remy alternates between chasing the tennis ball and independently switching out balls, entertaining herself without handler engagement. When other dogs pass by, she becomes momentarily distracted, but the handler redirects her focus by tossing the ball, and she immediately re-engages in play. Upon returning to her kennel, Remy exhibits frustration by slamming against the door and attempting to dart out as handler is trying to close it back. She is secured safely without and issues.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): We reccomend Remy be placed in an adult-only home at this time. Place with a New Hope partner: Remy came into the care center due to her owner's moving. In Remy's prior home she is social/affectionate, very active and playful. She likes to be where people are, the bedroom and in the living room. She loves bath time/water and allows her family to bathe and brush her.She knows the cues for sit and stay and she loves to cuddle.In the care center Remy can be social and playful in low-stress settings—engaging in fetch, taking treats gently, and leaning in for petting.Remy has not adjusted well to the care center environment, and has escalated during transitions, particularly when being returned to her kennel. Remy frequently paws, slams, and bites at her kennel door, and when highly stressed, resists re-entry by pulling, crawling away, and attempting to bolt out once inside. These behaviors, along with reports of nipping during leashing and heavy panting with dilated pupils. Remy would benefit from placement with a New Hope partner.
Potential challenges: : Social hyperarousal,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Anxiety,Strength/leash pulling,Kennel presence
Potential challenges comments:: Social Hyperarousal: During her handling assessment, Remy displayed signs of hyperarousal including jumping, leash biting, heavy panting, and whale eyes. Though she was able to recover on her own, these behaviors suggest difficulty regulating excitement and stress. Training should focus on impulse control exercises, structured decompression time, and reinforcing calm behavior through positive reinforcement. Please see the handout on arousal. Anxiety / Kennel presence: Remy is fearful when startled or physically moved, and shows signs of anxiety such as pacing, panting, a tucked tail, and whale eyes. In the care center, she also digs at her kennel door. Training should prioritize building trust through slow, predictable interactions, confidence-building exercises, and enrichment to reduce stress. Creating a calm environment and using desensitization techniques can help her feel more secure. Please see the handout on generalized anxiety. Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Remy frequently paws, slams, and bites at her kennel door, and when highly stressed, resists re-entry by pulling, crawling away, and attempting to bolt out once inside. These behaviors, along with reports of nipping during leashing and heavy panting with dilated pupils.Training will focus on building trust, reducing stress through desensitization and counter-conditioning, and reinforcing calm behavior during handling and transitions. Please see the handout on Fearful/potential for defensive aggression. Strength / Leash Pulling: Remy pulls hard on leash during walks, which can be challenging to manage. Training should include loose-leash walking techniques using reward-based methods. Tools like front-clip harnesses and consistent reinforcement of walking beside the handler can help improve leash manners and reduce pulling. Please see the handout on Strength / Leash Pulling.
