Hello, my name is Peppa. My animal id is #250441. I am a female unknown (update later) cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 8 years 2 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 3/30/2026, with the surrender reason stated as animal behavior - aggressive towards people.

The last bite/scratch to a person was 3/19/2026. The last bite/scratch to an animal was 3/23/2026. Peppa lunged without warning and swatted at the resident child's face causing one scratch. Peppa was noted to play with the resident dog and then escalate to aggression. Litter box training: Noted to spray. Energy level/descriptors: Low energy level. Other notes: Peppa is described as independent and tends to keep to herself, spending most of her time indoors, especially in the bedroom. She is not interested in play and gets interactive playtime once a day. She enjoys scratching cardboard and vertical surfaces. The previous owner noted that one of their favorite things about the cat is that she can be quite chill at times. Behavior challenges include scratching people and furniture, meowing or crying frequently, and hissing. Tuna is her favorite treat. Peppa has never had her nails trimmed or her coat brushed. She struggles and squirms when picked up and held. When placed in a carrier, she also struggles and squirms. Upon intake, Peppa immediately jumped out of the box and was loose in the intake room. She would hiss on approach. She was cornered into a den and continued to hiss while inside.

Handler waits until she calms and is still and quiet in her den, marks "good kitty", then leaves. 4/4/26 ACFR Peppa is in her den with wide eyes, dilated pupils, and forward ears. She lip licks and growls when shoreline cover is lifted, then begins hissing and lunging. Handler waits until she is still and quiet, marks "good kitty", and leaves.
ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Moderate
VOCAL:: Talkative
CHARACTER TYPE: : Bold,Independent
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful,Other,New home adjustment period
Potential challenges comments:: Peppa was reported by her owner that in the last year, she has started to be aggressive towards her daughter and residential dog. Peppa had been in the home since she was a kitten. At this time, the behavior team cannot be sure what her triggers are. Peppa is best suited for experienced adopters who have an understanding of typical feline behavior and are prepared to use management strategies including keeping a calm, quiet environment for Peppa and providing enrichment and high value treats to encourage positive associations, as well as allowing Peppa to interact on her own terms.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : New Hope Only
RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home,No dogs
Recommendations comments:: The behavior team recommends a home with no children and no dogs due to a bite/scratch history - See "Known History".
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Peppa is inside of her den. A scratcher tool is slowly extended to the opening of the portal, and Peppa lunges forward and strikes the tool intensely, claws extended. The den cover is slowly lifted and Peppa is crouched with flattened ears and dilated eyes. She spits and hisses, lunging forward to strike the den door several times. The interaction is ended to avoid increasing Peppa's fear, anxiety, and stress. Peppa is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and may require further investigation before placement in a home. She has tried to swat, is extremely fearful in the shelter environment, and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time. She? may have a known history of behavioral issues that need to be addressed.
