Animal Profile

Princely

Hello, my name is Princely. My animal id is #266727. I am a male black cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 4 years 9 months 1 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 9/27/2026, with the surrender reason stated as animal circumstance - not spayed/neutered.

Princely is on the at-risk list due to medical and behavior concerns. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. He has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers. Medically, he is not eating due to a severe upper respiratory tract infection. He needs supportive care in a veterinary clinic to recover.

Let's get to know each other a bit more...

What my friends at ACC say about me: I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I am looking for a home with a patient person. Princely is not open to interaction at this time and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. Because his previous owner reports he is friendly, playful, and talkative in a home environment, we believe the behavior seen in the care center is shelter-specific and this cat would make a great pet but is really struggling in the shelter environment. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, home with adopters who are willing to work with a cat who needs time and patience to help him adjust to their new home.

Details on my behavior are...

Is this cat having litter box issues?: Yes

If yes, Please elaborate:: Princely is spraying everywhere. He was able to see outdoor cats from his home.

Litter box training: Conflicting details provided, prior owner initially stated that Princely was urinating everywhere in the home but when asked by another counselor they stated that he was just spraying. The feline behavior team will monitor his litterbox habits in the shelter and provide an update at a later date. Princely is also unneutered, which may be a contributing factor. * Although the owner reported possible litterbox issues, exact details were unclear. It is possible that due to being unneutered he may be prone to marking behavior. His litterbox habits have been monitored in the shelter over a two-week period, and he has been observed to be using the litterbox appropriately at the care center. * Energy level/descriptors: Medium Other notes: Princely is reported to enjoy brushes to his coat and being picked up/held. ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 10/4/26 Vol Sitting in litter box with dilated eyes. Hissed when tool approached, but leaned forward to sniff a cup of Temptations and squeeze-up. Ate cautiously at first, and then more eagerly. Hissed some more and low growled when the kennel card was adjusted, but then continued eating. Came forward a bit as the cup moved. Looked up and growled when finished. Ate Temptations through the bars - rewarded with more treats when he didn't hiss and we got quite a few in a row! Then ate squeeze-up from the tube through the bars, remaining calm. 10/12/26 FB73 Pokes his head out of the portal exit, observing the assess with a slightly tense body as they approach. When the click stick is offered, he leans forward to sniff it before pulling back. A squeeze up is offered using the tool and he leans forward to sniff it before hesitantly beginning to eat it, eating all of it. 10/13/26 Sitting upright upon approach. Eyes wide, ears erect and forward. He slowly retreats when attempting to make contact with the scratcher tool. Lip licks throughout the interaction. Ended to help reduce stress.

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Princely is laying in his den, tense and low growling as the assessor approaches. When the kennel door is opened and the den cover is lifted, he hisses, lunging at the den door with both front paws and hard pressure. He is spoken to softly and the assessor slowly attempted petting with the click stick. When petting is attempted, he hisses and swats hard at the tool. As the assessor slowly pulls the tool away, he swats hard and continues hissing, lunging at the den door as the den cover is placed back. The interaction is ended to reduce stress.
