She would benefit from a calm, experienced placement that can provide low-pressure handling, predictability, and gradual confidence-building support. Behavior Condition: 5. Red

Date of intake:: 12/17/2025

Means of surrender (length of time in previous home):: Stray(Unknown Hsitory)

Behavior toward dogs:: came in with 2 dogs

Date of assessment:: 12/19/2025

Summary:: Due to Azula high level of fearfulness, a handling assessment will not be conducted at this time.

Summary (6):: 12/27/25: Azula displays the same behaviors as of yesterday evening (12/26). Please refer to those notes. 12/26/25: (PM) Azula is laying down on her bed with a tense body as handler approaches. She begins growling as the handler unlocks the door. She would continue to growl and try to avoid the leash by moving away. She is able to be slowly leashed as she turns her head away. The handler then stands to the side and she slowly walks out of kennel. She is then taken to the behavior room. In the room, she has a tense body and tucked tail as she explored around. She would constantly try to seek exit at the door. The handler is able to quickly clip their leash and she pulls hard on the way back to her kennel and enters with no issues. 12/26/25: (AM) Azula is laying down on her bed with a tense body as handler approaches. On the way back to kennel, she pulls hard and snaps at the handler's hand when they try to clip their leash. The handler is able use a hook to retrieve their leash when the leash eventually falls off of her in kennel.

Summary (7):: 12/23/25: Azula's behavior is consistent with 12/21, and continues to growl having to be leashed with the handler propping the door forward and throwing the leash onto her. Azula will begin to pace between the office doors, growl when looked at but when new staff enter Azula will lean her rear into the handler leg for a moment. Azula is clipped and brought back to kennel. 12/21: Azula is barking hard in her kennel when a handler approaches. She runs to the back of her kennel with her body stiff, whale eye, tail tucked, still hard barking. She presses into a back corner, growling as the handler unlocks the door. Chicken breast is tossed in, and she eats the pieces closer to her as the handler tries to make a trail closer to the front. She stops taking the chicken and runs back to her corner, growling. She darts away when the handler attempts to leash her. Once successfully leashed, she readily exits the kennel but tries to put more distance between her and the handler. She is taken to the behavior office but the handler does not attempt to clip her collar with a drag leash. Treats are offered, and she eats a piece of a churu but then growls at the handler when they offer her another piece. Azula paces between the two office doors, seeking an exit, before hiding in a corner. Once her kennel is cleaned, she is returned to it. The handler uses a hook to remove the lead. Azula crouches behind the fringed part of her kennel and she snaps at the hook before trying to run to the back of her kennel once the lead is removed. 12/19/25: Azula displays the same behaviors as of yesterday (12/18). Please refer to those notes. 12/18/25: Azula is laying down on her bed with a tense body as handler approaches. She approaches the front with a tense body and takes a few treats. She then retreats to the back of her kennel and begins growling as the handler unlocks the door. She would continue to growl and try to avoid the leash by moving away and tying climb up the wall. She is able to be slowly leashed as she turns her head away. The handler then stands to the side and she slowly walks out of kennel. She is then taken to the behavior room. In the room, she has a tense body and tucked tail as she explored around. She would growl each time she saw the handler move as she would try to walk away and seek exit. She would try to hide behind the handler and had no interest in treats or toys. She is then slowly taken back to her kennel and pulls hard inside.

Potential challenges: : Fearful/potential for defensive aggression

Potential challenges comments:: Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: During Azula intake When staff approached the vehicle and officers opened the door she began to growl and hard bark. Staff had Canine behavior assist with handling. She continued to low growl and hard bark while being offered treats by Canine behavior. In the care center she displays growling low body and whale eyes. Use slow, non-threatening approaches, avoid direct eye contact, and monitor body language for early stress signals. Pair interactions with high-value treats, allow Azula to approach on her own terms, and provide a quiet, low-stimulation environment to reduce stress. Please see the handout on Fearful/potential for defensive aggression.
