Animal Profile

Salem

Hello, my name is Salem. My animal id is #252342. I am a desexed male brown tabby cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 3 years 2 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 4/26/2026, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- eviction.

Salem needs at risk placement for medical reasons. He is a young adult male neutered cat with a severe upper respiratory tract infection. He is a curious cat interested in pets and treats when he is feeling well. He is not eating and receiving medication through an esophageal feeding tube in shelter. He needs supportive care in a veterinary clinic to recover.

Let's get to know each other a bit more...

What my friends at ACC say about me: It is unknown if I have ever lived with other animals or children. I will flourish in a calm environment and a low-traffic home. I love to be loved, but on my own terms! Let's brush up on some feline body language together! My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet!

Details on my behavior are...

Behavior Condition: 3. Yellow

KNOWN HISTORY:: Salem was brought in with limited information on his behavior history in a home environment.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 04/20/26 FB47 Salem was on top of the den, and was fairly calm and curious about treats. He came down when offered squeeze-up. He ate the squeeze-up while allowing petting on his head and cheek, and when petted along his back, his tail progressively got higher and higher, although it began to swish back and forth a bit; however, he was not escalating. The swishing tail increased in speed slightly, but he still remained reasonably calm, enjoying treats and petting. He then wanted to come forward and walked out of the kennel and allowed himself to be picked up, but he caught sight of a neighbor cat and hissed. When he was put back in the kennel, he was reasonably calm, if slightly worked up, and gave one final little hiss. Before being taken out of the kennel, he was calm when gently picked up inside it. He’s a sweet cat who may be slightly aroused at times and may not enjoy the company of other cats, at least not without a careful introduction.

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Subdued

VOCAL:: Quiet

CHARACTER TYPE: : Shy ,Calm,Sweet,Curious

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Other,New home adjustment period

Potential challenges comments:: Please see enrichment notes. While we have limited known history on his behavior, he has hissed at the other cats in the shelter and may take some time to warm up.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 2

RECOMMENDATIONS:: No young children

Recommendations comments:: No young children under 5 years old.

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Salem was lying in his den, eyes squinting and returning slow blinks. He was not responsive to treats, but allowed pets with the click stick along his head and back, body relaxed. He was very under the weather at the time of this assessment but he has previously been reported as being calm but curious, coming forward for treats and pets but only hissing towards his neighbor cats. Salem tolerates attention and petting but appears to be moderately fearful or stressed in the shelter. He will likely need time to warm up to his new home. We recommend that he go to a home with some cat experience preferred or at least be well counseled in fearful cat behavior.
