Papo
Hello, my name is Papo. My animal id is #267737. I am a male gray cat at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 9 years 1 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a aco - owner surrender on 10/9/2026, with the surrender reason stated as animal behavior - aggressive towards people.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.
Pre-Screener FormPapo is on the At Risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. He has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers. Papo has moderate dental disease.

Details on my behavior are...
Behavior Condition: 4. Orange
KNOWN HISTORY:: Papo was brought in with limited information on his behavior history in a home environment. Client called in needing to surrender their grandmothers cat Papo. Their Grandmother had recently passed away. Client states the cat is about 19 years old. Client states he is not adapting to his new surroundings very well and has been getting aggressive. Field Notes: Cat (Papo) was free in apartment upon arrival and was hiding behind tv stand in living room. Once staff moved furniture out of the way cat fled into back bedroom. Staff was able to net cat after some time and cat begin either hissing or panting while in net.
ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 10/20/26 FB47 Papo sits upon his den like a throne and looks down at me as I open the kennel door. His face and body are neutral, both tense as I enter the kennel. I greet him verbally, he growls and narrows his eyes, his ears switch to the side. I slowly push a tray of some chicken treats on the base of his kennel, I move back but keep the door open and talk to him quietly. Papo sniffs before slowly jumping down and approaching the treats. Although he keeps a cautious eye on me he enjoys his chicken relaxing slightly. We have some laser time, although not comfortable to play with me yet he is very curious. I leave Papo with a treat puzzle which he quickly begins to work on.

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Upon approach Papo is in his covered den out of sight. The assessor opens the kennel door and greets, no response. The assessor slowly lifts the den cover. Papo is in the back of his den pressed into the corner. His face is tense with pulled back whiskers, narrowed eyes, enlarged pupils, and flattened ears. His body is tense with his tail wrapped around himself. He growls lowly looking at the assessor. The assessor slowly enters the den with a tool. Papo begins to growl louder and hisses. He swats at the tool, not allowing for any contact. The assessor removes the tool. Papo hard stares at the assessor and begins to quickly exit the den, his body low to the base of the kennel while growling and meowing. The assessor ends the interaction due to high FAS. Papo is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. He has tried to swat, is extremely fearful in the shelter environment, and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time. He may have a known history of behavioral issues that need to be addressed.
