Brownie is noted to allow petting and will display a wagging tail. Medically, Brownie has Otitis Externa. Brownie arrived at MACC as an owner surrender. His previous owner describes him as active and playful. While in care, Brownie has been observed to be fearful. Noted to become tense and retreat from handlers when they initiate contact. During his medical exam, Brownie was reported to growl, head whip, and attempt to bite when they attempted to clean his ears. Due to the detailed behavior, we recommend an experienced adult-only home.

[DVM Intake] DVM Intake Exam Estimated age: 6-8 yrs based on teeth and white on muzzle but no nuclear sclerosis noted Microchip noted on Intake? neg History: o/s Subjective: BARH. Slightly thin Observed Behavior - wagging tail and interactive, allowed all handling and tasks, growled and turned head to bite when attempted to clean ears - painful Is there evidence of suspected cruelty? no Objective: T = P = 100 R = eup BCS= 3-4/9 EENT: Eyes -cornea/ sclera/ conj clear. Ears - dark brown d/c AU, mild-mod erythema, scabbing on tips of pinnae, lichenification of pinnae and canals. No nasal or ocular discharge noted Oral Exam: mod tartar on back teeth PLN: No enlargements noted H/L: NSR, NMA, CRT < 2, Lungs clear, eupneic ABD: Non painful, no masses palpated U/G: intact male, 2 sst, prescrotal area clear MSI: Ambulatory x 4, skin free of parasites, no masses noted, healthy hair coat, calluses on lateral elbows CNS: Mentation appropriate - no signs of neurologic abnormalities Rectal: externally NSF Wood's Lamp Exam: Assessment: Adult MI LMB Otitis externa Underweight Prognosis: Good Plan: Routine intake tasks. Basic Information:: Brownie is a 6 year old LMB dog. He is seeking a new home due to prior owner moving. He has experience with adults, children, and dogs.

For a New Family to Know: Brownie is a very active and playful dog! He is independent and prefers contact on his own terms, but is social and affectionate with his family. Brownie can usually be found where the people are. He loves bath time and allows for bathing, brushing, and nail trimming. Brownie has experience in a crate but no longer needs it. He loves car rides. Brownie is used to going on 2 walks per day for 1 hour. He is a smart guy who knows sit, stay, shake, and roll. Brownie loves to run with his people and watch over the kids to make sure they're safe.

Summary:: According to Brownie's previous owner(s), Brownie is friendly, outgoing, playful, and tolerant of other dogs. 9/12/16: Brownie is introduced to a novel intact female and is loose at the fence with mid level wags. He sniffs nose to nose through the fence with perked ears, remaining loose, then disengages and sniffs in the catch pen. The meet is kept to the fence due to Brownie's medical concerns.

Summary (7):: 9/16/26: On the whiteboard, Brownie is noted to "lunge towards the handler when being put back in kennel". 9/15/26: Brownie is standing at the front of his kennel with a neutral body; he is leashed and brought out the room. On the street, Brownie walks with mild to no leash tension and he doesn't react to people. He is aloof, as he ignores the handler when they call him; the handler presents treats and their hand to sniff, but he shows no interest. While walking back to the shelter, Brownie stops and looks at a small dog several feet a way; even as he presents a neutral, forward body, the handler calls him and applies gentle leash pressure, which helps him to disengage and walk across the street. Brownie does it once more with another small dog that's a little closer than the other, but disengages when the handler walks him inside. Brownie comes in for his assessment (see notes); afterwards, he is brought back to his kennel. While the handler places the lock back on the kennel latch, Brownie quickly jumps forward, stands on his hind legs while propping against the kennel door, and alert barks in the handlers face; he jumps down and then jumps up again to do it once more. The handler locks the kennel, places a kennel cover his kennel, and ends the interaction afterwards. 9/12/26 (D2D): Brownie was lying down as handler approached. When kennel door was opened Brownie stood up and came forward where he was easily leashed and pulled for playgroup (Please see dog to dog notes for details). 9/9/26: As a handler approaches his kennel, Brownie alert barks at them; they put treats into his kennel when he stops, but he shows no interest.

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to fearful behavior we recommend an adult only home. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.

Potential challenges comments:: Handling Sensitivity: During his medical exam, Brownie growled, head whipped and attempted to bite when handlers attempted to clean his ears. Positive reinforcement, reward based training should be used to pair touch with good things such as food rewards in order to teach Brownie to be more comfortable with this. Please see handout on Handling and Touch Sensitivity. Fearful Defensive: Brownie has been observed to become tense when handlers initiate contact. He has also been observed to bark at handlers while in kennel. It is important to move slowly with Brownie, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow them to initiate interactions with new people.
