Nuage
Hello, my name is Nuage. My animal id is #235559. I am a desexed female white dog at the Staten Island Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 3 years 4 months 1 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 12/12/2025, with the surrender reason stated as animal behavior - aggressive towards people.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Nuage is a social and affectionate female dog who is still adjusting to the shelter environment. She has a history of two bite incidents involving other dogs. She should be the only pet in the home. On intake, Nuage displayed higher-level warning behaviors toward staff. However, she has allowed handling when approached appropriately. Nuage will require a slow, thoughtful approach and consistent boundaries to help her feel safe and secure. She would do best with an experienced owner who understands canine behavior, can manage introductions with new people carefully, and is committed to providing structure, patience, and positive reinforcement. In the right home, Nuage has the potential to continue building trust and settling into a stable routine.

Summary:: Nuage had 2 bite incidents in her previous home when greeting other dogs on leash. 9.2.2025 Nuage met a large breed dog through a gate and Nuage ignored the dog, did not approach or move away from the other dog.
Summary (1):: Nuage is an adult female dog who is described as social and affectionate, with a combination of playful energy and a relaxed, couch-potato nature. She spent most of her time in the living room and around people. Nuage allows her owner or family members to bathe and brush her. She walks on a leash but pulls hard and can be somewhat difficult to manage. She was walked three to four times per day, including a brief morning walk to relieve herself, a longer walk of about one hour, and shorter walks in the afternoon and evening. Nuage was previously crate trained but does not currently require a crate. She enjoys car rides and responds well to cues such as sit, stay, and “don’t.” She is described as very smart. Nuage enjoys treats and playing with squeaky toys.
Summary (5):: 1/2 Nuage is at her kennel door barking when staff approaches. She is easily leashed and taken to the yard. On the way out she stops and solicits attention from staff members in the hallway, sitting at their feet with a wagging tail. In the yard she mostly stays to herself sniffing around but checks in with staff a few times. She leans into their legs and accepts pets on her head and along her back. She runs after toys when they're tossed but loses interest in them quickly. After a while she sits by the exit waiting to go back inside. She is easily leashed and pulls hard on the way back inside.
Summary (6):: 12/27 Nuage was at her kennel door jumping and barking upon approach. When staff opens the kennel door she is still a little jumpy but was easily leashed. Coming out she pulled a little on the leash. Nuage was taken into the small yard. She got the zoomies and was playful with staff. She came up to staff several times seeking attention and leaning into staff's lap. She accepted all pets from staff. Going back inside she pulled a little but otherwise no issues. 12/15 Nuage is at the front of her kennel barking and standing against the door. She is easily leashed and brought to meet and greet to be collared. She lowered her head and side eyes staff member as they secured collar. She is brough tot the yard and is avoidant at first of attaching a drag leash. Once attached, she sniffs around the yard. She is called over and ignore handler. She refuses treats when offered. Nuage is observed to be drooling, she is brought for a walk around the building. She pulls hard on leash and is easily returned to kennel. 12/14 Nuage is standing at kennel front barking. She is easily leashed and kept on a short leash passing other dogs. She has a relaxed body as they walk around the building, then briefly explores the yard. She is tolerant of pets on her back and returns without issue. 9/20 Nuage stood at the front of her kennel barking and jumping up and down. The handler was able to put the leash on her, and she rushed out of her kennel and down the hall, picking up any scraps of food she could find on the floor. While on the walk, Nuage kept staring at the handler as if asking for treats. She would walk behind the handler and stop. After realizing she was not going to receive anything, she continued walking at a regular pace, neither too fast nor too slow. She stopped to sniff the ground or pulled toward areas where she smelled food. She was easy to redirect using a dehydrated beef liver treat, which she took quickly and roughly from the hand. On the walk back, she continued sniffing the floor and looking up at the handler for treats. Once inside the building, Nuage pulled through the hallway, jumped on another handler, and took a treat from the ground. Back in her kennel, she allowed the handler to remove the leash and close the kennel door. She then began jumping at the kennel window and barking loudly.
Summary (7):: 9/14 Nuage was barking and wagging her tail at the front of the kennel when staff approached. She was easily leashed and brought to the yard. She pulled at the end of the leash in the hallway while searching for food. In the yard, she remained on leash and sniffed around while pulling and searching. At one point, staff attempted to hose down an area away from Nuage, but she closed up, hunched over, and tried to back away from the staff member and the hose while staring. Staff immediately stopped using the hose and allowed Nuage to lead through the yard. She ended up standing near the yard door, looking out and ignoring staff. She tolerated being petted and was easily returned to her kennel. 9/10 Nuage was barking at the front of her kennel upon approach. She was easily leashed and searched the floor for food. She was taken on a walk and continued this food-seeking behavior. She needed gentle pulling to move from certain spots. She tolerated petting once clipped and returned to her kennel without issue. 9/2 Nuage was sitting at the front of her kennel upon approach. She was easily leashed and brought into the yard. A drag leash was attached, and Nuage sniffed around the yard. She was called over but ignored the handler and continued sniffing. Nuage occasionally stood at the gate, looking at the handler and then back at the gate. A male LMB approached the gate, and Nuage arched her back. She was walked around the building and pulled mildly. 9/2 Nuage was lying down when approached. She moved to the front of the kennel and was easily roped. Nuage was taken for a brief walk, where she walked nicely but then balked and refused to continue. She was then brought to the yard and kept on leash. Nuage accepted gentle petting from staff and was easily returned to her kennel.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No Children (under 13): Due to her fearfulness and potential to escalate we recommend an adult only home for Nuage at this time. Place with a New Hope partner: We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.
Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Multiple-bite history/risk of future aggression,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Strength/leash pulling,Bite history (dog)
Potential challenges comments:: Resource Guarding: Nuage finds food, toys and treats of a high value. She is reported to growl and hard bark. We recommend Nuage be left alone when eating. Nothing should ever be taken directly out of her mouth. Should you have to remove something from Nuage, we recommend always trading for something of an equal or higher value. She should be taught the “drop” cue and trade-up games. Please see handout on Resource Guarding. Handling/touch sensitivity: Nuage is fearful when meeting new people. She is initially shy of touch. It is important to always go slow and give Nuage the option to walk away from any social interaction. She should never be forced to approach anything that she is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. Please see handout on Handling and Touch Sensitivity. Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Nuage was hard barking and lunging on intake. Her owner reported her to begin growling and snarling in the home, we are unaware of any triggers presented at this time. Nuage gives clear warnings when she is uncomfortable and does seem to choose to avoid or retreat when given the opportunity, but if prevented from moving away there is a potential to escalate to higher-level warning behaviors and possible fear-based aggression. It is important to move slowly with Nuage, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow her to initiate interactions with new people. She should never be forced to greet or to interact if she is not comfortable and soliciting attention. Please see handout on Fearful Potential for Defensive Aggression. Multiple-bite history/risk of future aggression/Bite history (dog): While in her previous home, Nuage bit 2 other dogs (SMB & LMB) when greeting them on leash. Nuage was showing subtle warning, ears back, whale eyes. On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: Nuage was involved in 2 bite incidents when allowed to approach other dogs. She will pull hard towards other dogs. She will need an experienced owner familiar with working with this behavior. We recommend a front clip harness or head halter to help manage this behavior. Please see the handout on On-Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration. Strength/leash pulling: Nuage recently put on a lot of weight recently and pulls hard on leash. Please see handout on Leash Manners.
