Glimmer

Hello, my name is Glimmer. My animal id is #224953. I am a desexed male black cat at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 7 years 2 months 1 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a aco - impound on 4/17/2025.

Let's get to know each other a bit more...

This pet needs emergency placement. Please click here to go to our emergency placement page for more information. Glimmer is on the at-risk list due to medical concerns. Glimmer has had chronic diarrhea and has allowed for limited handling while in our care. Glimmer would benefit from a quiet low stress environment so his medical concerns can be addressed appropriately. What my friends at ACC say about me: Glimmer is an adult cat that may not have had many interactions with humans from an early age. He is apprehensive of people and while showing no aggressive behaviors, he tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. Please be mindful that older cats will require more time and skill in order for them to be comfortable around people, we recommend offering high value treats and food to help build a positive association to humans. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.

Details on my behavior are...

Behavior Condition: 2. Blue

KNOWN HISTORY:: Glimmer was brought in from a hoarding situation with limited information on his behavior history in a home environment.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 4/23/25 FB61 Hunched in litterbox, body and face neutral. He watches me as I open the kennel door and he leans away while tilting his ears when offered treats and a toy. When I reach towards him to attempt petting he slowly begins to crawl away from my hand in an attempt to avoid touch, ears tilted and tail/body low. Nervous - needs more time to adjust. 5/2/25 FB79 Such a timid boy! Inside of his litterbox, Glimmer avoided eye contact when i opened the cubby door and spoke as he laid with his tail tightly wrapped a low head/gaze and his ears forward. He had no reaction when i spoke to him and when i pet the top of his head - nor when i pet down and around his body. I spent some time with with his and he tolerated a head massage and cheek rubs with no reaction. 5/4/25 Vol. Glimmer was on the ledge, watching me. I put Squeeze Up next to him but he did not try to eat it. I went to get him a toy and when I returned, he was lying down at the front of the kennel. I opened the door and he allowed me to pet him with the scratcher tool. He moved into the smaller compartment, then leapt up to the ledge. He is a little fearful but sweet. 5/14/25 FB61 Hunched in cubby, body and face tense with feet and tail tucked. He tolerates petting while lowering his head, slow-blinking hard and shifting his weight. I offer him some treats and he gets up to slowly retreat into his main kennel space. Not too interested in interaction at this time. 5/18/25 FB79 On the top part of his kennel, Glimmer has his paws tucked away, forward ears and his eyes neutral. He slow blinks at me when i speak to him for a while and allows all pets on his head and cheeks then leans in for some chin rubs. Glimmer got easily startled by the loud sounds in the room but his eyes lit up when i offered some treats and he leaned in to enjoy while accepting pets on his head. 5/23/25 FB79 Inside of his bed, Glimmer has his wide eyes forward ears and his tail tightly wrapped; he leans in to sniff the treats that i place near him but has no reaction and does not care to enjoy. Glimmer allows pets on his head briefly before he ducks and backs away tensing up while hunching his shoulders inward. 5/28/25 FB61 In cubby upon approach, body and face tense with eyes alert and ears tilted. He hisses and immediately retreats as I open the kennel door. I speak to him softly from the depths of his kennel, where he has retreated and I leave him some treats before closing the kennel door. When I check on him a few moments later he is at the front of his kennel again eating all of his treats! I speak to him softly and leave him drive-by treaties for the remainder of the time he's in the room. He will hiss but he does not escalate further. -GAN

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Subdued

VOCAL:: Quiet

CHARACTER TYPE: : Shy ,Timid,Independent

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful,New home adjustment period,Adult cat socialization

Potential challenges comments:: Glimmer came from a home with about 13+ other cats, it is likely that he was not appropriately socialized to humans. "Spirit cats" in a shelter context refer to cats who are very shy with people, preferring to live in a quiet environment and interacting with other cats rather than humans. They are often a good choice for patient, kind individuals who can create a safe and comfortable space for them to thrive. We cannot be certain whether or not Glimmer will warm up to socialization in shelter or in a home environment and clients should be counseled on the potential of Glimmer being a Spirit Cat.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 3

RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home

Recommendations comments:: Due to the behavior seen in shelter and needing a longer time to warm up, the behavior team feels Glimmer would do best in an adult-only home where they would be able to acclimate in a calm environment.

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: In the back of his kennel, Glimmer has a tense body as he is crouched in the corner with wide eyes and forward ears. He has no reaction when the assessor speak and fixates on the room behind the assessor as his eyes start to dilate. When the tool is brought in for petting he tolerates pets on his head and cheeks but flinches and lip licks when being pet down his back. Glimmer remained tolerant of all pets but when pick up was attempted he tensed up even more hunching his shoulder in and pushing off the bed in attempt to back away from the assessor. He backed himself further into the corner as he tightly wrapped his tail around his body while lip licking. 5/22/25 Glimmer showed similar behaviors during his reassessment. 6/23/25 Glimmer showed similar behaviors during his reassessment.
