Animal Profile

Zues

Hello, my name is Zues. My animal id is #238908. I am a male gray dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 5 years 1 months 1 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 10/28/2025, with the surrender reason stated as person health - allergies.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Zues is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Zues arrived at the Care Center due to his previous owners having allergies to dogs. Upon intake, Zues allowed handling and at times was loose bodied. Despite efforts to keep him comfortable at the Care Center, Zeus has been showing concerning levels of anxiety and on-leash reactivity. During a handling assessment, Zeus was noted to be panting, pacing, and seeking exit persistently. Zeus's previous owners also noted he was an anxious dog especially when left alone. During walks, Zues has been noted to pull hard toward dogs with tense body without being able to be redirected. Zues at times has also shown reactivity to people, pulling toward people on walks; during his medical exam he was initially wiggly but became tense as medical staff approached him. Zues's previous owners report that he is smart, social with familiar people, and understands basic commands. Medically, Zues is being treated for CIRDC (Canine Infectious Respiratory Disease Complex), is noted to have Dermatitis, and Otitis Externa.

Zues is a social, affectionate, and smart boy who quickly adjusts to new environments and loves to be where the action is. He is housetrained, knows basic cues like "sit," "stay," and "go," and enjoys playing with his favorite squishy ball. His previous owner noted he is very understanding and listens well. Zues' ideal home is an active one-on-one environment where he can thrive with plenty of playtime and attention. Zues would do best in a home prepared to manage his chicken allergy and perhaps work on his excitement-related "pee" accidents. While he can be startled and exhibits some anxiety when left alone, his overall sunny disposition makes him a wonderful companion. This loving boy is ready for his forever home. If you have an active household and are looking for a playful and loyal friend, Zues might be the perfect addition to your family.

He walks to the elevator where he stands infront of the handler and looks to them with a soft body and a soft wagging tail. He is offered treats and takes them gently. Zues is brought downstairs to the street where he does not pull. He walks beside the handler with a loose leash and body. He checks in with the handler and takes treats gently. People pass and Zues ignores them. A familiar handler approaches and he sniffs them. Zues is called away and he sits at the primary handler's feet for treats. Summary:: Loose body, allowed petting

Date of initial:: 10/29/2025

Summary:: Initially wiggly and seeking attention, but becomes tense when approached by examiner.

ENERGY LEVEL:: Zues is described as active and enthusiastic. They will need daily mental and physical activity to keep them engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm. We recommend feeding with puzzle feeders and food-dispensing toys. And we recommend using force-free, reward-based training techniques for Zues.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),No cats,Single-pet home,Recommend no dog parks,Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to high levels of anxiety we recommend an adult only home. No Cats: Due to lunging towards cats while on leash we recommend a home with no cats. Single Pet Home/ No Dog Park: Due to lunging towards familiar and unfamiliar dogs we recommend a single pet home that make no trips to the dog park. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.

Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,Fearful,Separation anxiety,Anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Leash-biting

Potential challenges comments:: Resource Guarding: Zues has been obsvered to become tense and move away with a toy in his possession. Nothing should ever be taken directly out of Zues mouth, and any time something is removed they should be rewarded with a high value treat or toy. Please see handout on Resource Guarding. Fearful: Zues' previous owners stated that he is fearful when startled. It is important to move slowly with Zues, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow them to initiate interactions with new people. They should never be forced to greet or to interact if they are not comfortable and soliciting attention. Please see handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression. Separation Anxiety/ Anxiety: Zues' previous owners stated that he is anxious in the home and anxious when left alone. However, they did not give details of how this anxiety displayed itself During his assessment Zues was obsvered to be panting, pacing and vocalizing persistently throughout the interaction. Also seeking exit and being unable to be redirected. Zues also becomes frantic to return to the door when the handler moves him away. If Zues displays anxious behavior in their future home, we recommend puzzle toys, long walks, and giving them other things to focus on to alleviate their anxiety. Positive reinforcement, force-free training should be used. Please see handout on Generalized Anxiety. Please see handout on Separation Anxiety. On Leash Reactivity: Zues' previous owners stated that he will lunge towards strangers that approach, cats, small animals and dogs. During his stay in the care center Zues is obsvered to become tense and pull hard towards other dogs. Zues will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than dogs and other stimuli. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration. Leash Biting: It is reported that Zues is biting the leash. We recommend walking them with a toy to dissuade them from grabbing the leash. Positive reinforcement, force-free training is advised to teach them to focus on you rather than grabbing the leash. Please see handout on Leash Manners.
